  • In this study, stress and deformation of CFRD during its construction and impounding were analyzed and compared with its monitoring results. Moreover, deformation characteristics of CFRD after impounding were evaluated based on the settlement monitoring records of total 23 domestic and foreign CFRDs during construction and impounding. The investigation on the behavior of CFRD indicated that the influence of impounding on its stability was minimal although slight increases in vertical and horizontal stresses and strains were observed. Also, one method was proposed to predict a crest settlement from multi-layer settlements by applying the best fit method. It is expected that the results of this study would provide practical information for the design, construction, and management of CFRD.

  • The settlement of a compaction plate resting on the surface of rubble-mound and subjected to a vibrating vertical load can be characterized by a transient amplitude and a plastic settlement. As long as the maximum imposed load does not exceed the bearing capacity of the rubble-mound, plastic settlement will approach an ultimate value and essentially steady-state vibration will ensue. For the settlement behavior by vibro-compaction, most laboratory experiments were conducted on laterally confined samples with loads over the full surface area or on samples placed on a vibrating table. In the field, the loads cover only a small fraction of the surface area. In this study, crushed stones are loaded with the same as field condition. According to the vibro-compaction experiments on crushed stone, it was found that approximately 90% of total settlement occur within 2 minutes and plastic settlement increases with increasing cyclic stress levels including static and dynamic stress. A compaction equation on which the number of load cycles, amplitude of plate, settlement, width of plate, and cyclic stress are related each other is proposed.

  • In this study, a composite behavior of stone columns reinforced in a soft ground, Sabkha, has been evaluated by performing a series of field measurements and numerical analyses. Field load tests were performed to verify the effect of the composite ground reinforced by stone columns in Kayan, Saudi. The settlement measured in the field test was compared with the settlement calculated by the Priebe method and the numerical analysis using ABAQUS. It is found that the settlement estimated using the Priebe method significantly overestimated the settlement measured in the field test. In addition, it is confirmed that consideration of confining effect exerted by surrounding adjacent stone columns in a numerical simulation is indispensable to estimate accurately the settlement of stone column composite ground.

  • Despite a number of studies on consolidation behavior that have been carried out in the Nakdong River estuary in Busan, these are focused on the prediction of final settlement during ground improvement process, and there is almost no research on the long-term settlement occurring after that. For the practical study on the long-term settlement, the field monitored settlement data that measured over 10 years in the Busan new port facilities area were used, and the final settlement and predicted time-settlement line were constituted by hyperbolic function. As a result, the measured settlements depend on the thickness of clayey soils, and the pattern were similar to each other and good agreement with the predicted time-settlement line using hyperbolic method. Also, the settlement in the lower non-improved layer occupied 62-76% of total settlement. Information about above results would be quite helpful to understand the long-term settlement behaviors as well as the non-improved layer's settlement is more careful consideration needed at design phase.

  • Displacement caused by tunneling is difficult to predict since it is affected by many factors such as ground condition, excavation method and supplementary method of reinforcement. In this study, horizontal inclinometer was employed to monitor ground settlements above a tunnel face before and after the excavation. Monitoring results were analyzed to predict the preceding displacement and settlement of the surface structures. The result of the analysis can be used to establish a proper counter measure which keeps the serviceability of the surface structures. Based on the analysis of the monitoring result, ground properties of the site were deduced and the influence of the tunnel excavation on the settlement of the foundation above the tunnel is analyzed.

  • The Plastic Board Drain is used to improve soft soils deposited in container terminal area at a port. This paper describes settlement behavior of soft ground in this area from PBD installation to the time of operating facilities. Previous researches focused on soil improvement effect of PBD, that is, the settlement occurred during ground improvement period. The residual settlement occurred during operating the facility is very important from the maintenance and management point of view. However, the study of this residual settlement has been rarely conducted. In this study, by analyzing the measured settlement data obtained from the container terminal area at the port, it was verified that the residual settlement induced during operating facilities occurred in a layer with PBD improvement. In addition, by comparison the settlement predicted by a numerical analysis with the settlement measured in the field, it was confirmed that the actual settlement is in the range of predicted settlement.

  • In refuse landfill, long-term settlement is considerably dependent upon the biological decomposition of refuse which is distinguished from typical soil behavior. Two equations are combined in order to model long-term settlement behavior of refuse landfill caused by mechanical secondary compression and secondary compression caused by the decomposition of biolegradable refuse. It is suggested that mechanical secondary compression is linear with respcet to the logarithm of time. In order to estimate the settlement that occurs due. to the decomposition of biodegradable refuse, a mathematical model is used which theoretically conoiders the decomposition process related to the solubilization stage of biodegradable refuse solid. This model is based on hydrolysis process and expressed as first order kinetics. The proposed model is applied to Lysimeter compression data of an old refuse. This paper intends to propose the simplest mathematical model which effectively represents settlement caused by the solubilization stage of biodegradable refuse solid on decomposition process.

  • Settlement prediction based on field monitored data, which is used to control subsequent surcharges, is very important in construction management for soft ground improvement with the preloading method. Observational settlement prediction methods, which are suggested for an instantaneous loading, have been widely used in fields. However, they have difficulties in the settlement prediction with subsequent surcharge change. In this paper, a simple method to predict the settlement with subsequent surcharge change is suggested. The suggested method adopts assumptions to simplify the complex field condition and utilizes observational methods. The suggested method is applied to a large consolidation test result, FDM analysis results, and field monitored settlement data to confirm its practicability. From the applications, the suggested method produces reasonable prediction results with various subsequent surcharge changes.

  • In the case of construction on soft ground - such as national expressways sponsored by Social Overhead Capital (SOC) - many problems occur due to excessive settlement: therefore, an accurate settlement prediction has a major impact on the selection of improvement methods, project budget and construction period. Most of the settlement prediction methods currently used in projects apply Terzaghi's Theory of One-Dimensional Consolidation which assumes the uniformity of the depth of the soft ground. However, the results of soft ground settlement predictions vary when the target layer is divided into multiple horizontal layers. This study analyzed the change in the consolidation settlement behavior according to the horizontal division of soft ground as well as with different loading height.

  • Fine recycled-concrete aggregates(RCAs) instead of natural sand were tested for a foundation material under sewage conduit system, which was evaluated based on foundation settlement at various conditions. To obtain this applicability of RCAs, the settlement behavior was simulated with FLAC program based on the difference of material properties, and immediate settlement behaviors and the change of material properties under the simulated drainage conditions also tested at the various loading conditions in the laboratory. Finally, large-scale settlement test in the field was conducted to prove the above feasibilities. Subsequently, the amount of settlement from the FLAC simulation was calculated under $5.0{\times}10^{-6}\;m$ and the extent of settlement and property changes (porosity, permeability and waster absorption) was not noticeable from the laboratory experiments. Also, settlement monitoring from the field experiment showed the consistent results with laboratory experiments except for the consolidation settlement(=5 mm) of the round below the foundation. In summary, adopting fine RCAs as a foundation material for sewage conduit system was resonable based of geotechnical point of view.
