Major Species and Anatomical Characteristics of the Wood Used for National Use Specified in Yeonggeon-Uigwes of the Late Joseon Dynasty Period (영건의궤 기록을 활용한 조선후기 국용목재의 주요 수종 조사 및 해부학적 특징)

  • To find out the wood species used in national wood structures in the late Joseon Dynasty, 11 volumes of Yeonggeon-Uigwes were reviewed. It was confirmed that the wood was mainly used for the repair and restoration of palaces, shrines, and fortresses. In the 17th to 20th centuries, the wood species specified in Yeonggeon-Uigwes have revealed either hardwood or softwood. As hardwood species, Juglans mandshurica, Zelkova serrata, Fraxinus rhynchophylla, Betula schmidtii, Paulownia coreana, or Quercus spp. (Quercus aliena; Q, variabilis; Q, dentata; Q, acutissima; Q, mongolica; Q, serrata) were used. As softwood species, Pinus densiflora and Pinus koraiensis were used. Investigation of the wood species is important part because the same species is required as a principle when reparing cultural heritage. In this study, the anatomical images of the wood species were investigated for some samples which were taken from the same species that has been stored in the wood specimen room of the National Institute of Forest Science, instead of the actual wood material used. It was possible to find out the wood species of each member in the wooden cultural heritage buildings by reviewing the Yeonggeon-Uigwes in the late Joseon Dynasty, and the anatomical images of the wood species required for determining the wood species in the repair or restoration of the buildings.

A Study on Pre-evaluation of Tree Species Classification Possibility of CAS500-4 Using RapidEye Satellite Imageries (농림위성 활용 수종분류 가능성 평가를 위한 래피드아이 영상 기반 시험 분석)

  • Updating a forest type map is essential for sustainable forest resource management and monitoring to cope with climate change and various environmental problems. According to the necessity of efficient and wide-area forestry remote sensing, CAS500-4 (Compact Advanced Satellite 500-4; The agriculture and forestry satellite) project has been confirmed and scheduled for launch in 2023. Before launching and utilizing CAS500-4, this study aimed to pre-evaluation the possibility of satellite-based tree species classification using RapidEye, which has similar specifications to the CAS500-4. In this study, the study area was the Chuncheon forest management complex, Gangwon-do. The spectral information was extracted from the growing season image. And the GLCM texture information was derived from the growing and non-growing seasons NIR bands. Both information were used to classification with random forest machine learning method. In this study, tree species were classified into nine classes to the coniferous tree (Korean red pine, Korean pine, Japanese larch), broad-leaved trees (Mongolian oak, Oriental cork oak, East Asian white birch, Korean Castanea, and other broad-leaved trees), and mixed forest. Finally, the classification accuracy was calculated by comparing the forest type map and classification results. As a result, the accuracy was 39.41% when only spectral information was used and 69.29% when both spectral information and texture information was used. For future study, the applicability of the CAS500-4 will be improved by substituting additional variables that more effectively reflect vegetation's ecological characteristics.

Visual Classification of Wood Knots Using k-Nearest Neighbor and Convolutional Neural Network (k-Nearest Neighbor와 Convolutional Neural Network에 의한 제재목 표면 옹이 종류의 화상 분류)

  • Various wood defects occur during tree growing or wood processing. Thus, to use wood practically, it is necessary to objectively assess their quality based on the usage requirement by accurately classifying their defects. However, manual visual grading and species classification may result in differences due to subjective decisions; therefore, computer-vision-based image analysis is required for the objective evaluation of wood quality and the speeding up of wood production. In this study, the SIFT+k-NN and CNN models were used to implement a model that automatically classifies knots and analyze its accuracy. Toward this end, a total of 1,172 knot images in various shapes from five domestic conifers were used for learning and validation. For the SIFT+k-NN model, SIFT technology was used to extract properties from the knot images and k-NN was used for the classification, resulting in the classification with an accuracy of up to 60.53% when k-index was 17. The CNN model comprised 8 convolution layers and 3 hidden layers, and its maximum accuracy was 88.09% after 1205 epoch, which was higher than that of the SIFT+k-NN model. Moreover, if there is a large difference in the number of images by knot types, the SIFT+k-NN tended to show a learning biased toward the knot type with a higher number of images, whereas the CNN model did not show a drastic bias regardless of the difference in the number of images. Therefore, the CNN model showed better performance in knot classification. It is determined that the wood knot classification by the CNN model will show a sufficient accuracy in its practical applicability.

  • This study studied the value of the spatial organization of the temple and the form of the garden located in the Seojang area in the southwestern regions of China. The value of the Lama temple was looked into by examining the relationship between Lamaism and Lama temple through the spatial organiz ation, building arrangement, and garden of temples that served as the center of history, culture, and politics of the time in the process of converging Buddhism introduced through China's central districts and India with folk beliefs in Seojang through the poor environment. To this end, the value of the space and garden of the Lama temple was derived through the representative Lama temples, Potala Temple, Norbulingka Temple, and Dazhao Temple. First, due to the unique environment in which ice caps and green areas coexist, the representative Lama temples in Seojang, Potala Temple, Norbulingka Temple, and Dazhao Temple, are widely distributed in the form of leaning against valleys and mountain ranges based on folk beliefs and Buddhism's Jatabuli(自他不二) and mandala. the target sites are largely divided into upper and lower spaces. Second, the target sites are largely divided into upper and lower spaces. Buildings for worship are located in the upper space, and spaces for practice and garden are located in the lower space. Located in the center of the practice space, the garden had an ideal structure to plant bo tree to escape from the two false obsession and go to a world of truth that is with the Buddha behind the world through practice like Sakyamuni, and there was a garden around the temple where meditation and exchange took place. Evaluation of Runoff Prediction from a Coniferous Forest Watersheds and Runoff Estimation under Various Cover Degree Scenarios using GeoWEPP Watershed Model (GeoWEPP을 이용한 침엽수림 지역 유출특성 예측 및 다양한 식생 피도에 따른 유출량 평가)

  • To control non-point source pollution at a watershed scale, rainfall-runoff characteristics from forest watersheds should be investigated since the forest is the dominant land use in Korea. Long-term monitoring would be an ideal method. However, computer models have been utilized due to limitations in cost and labor in performing long-term monitoring at the watersheds. In this study, the Geo-spatial interface to the Water Erosion Prediction Project (GeoWEPP) model was evaluated for its runoff prediction from a coniferous forest dominant watersheds. The $R^2$ and the NSE for calibrated result comparisons were 0.77 and 0.63, validated result comparisons were 0.92, 0.89, respectively. These comparisons indicated that the GeoWEPP model can be used in evaluating rainfall-runoff characteristics. To estimate runoff changes from a coniferous forest watershed with various cover degree scenarios, ten cover degree scenarios (10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 90%, 100%) were run using the calibrated GeoWEPP model. It was found that runoff increases with decrease in cover degree. Runoff volume was the highest ($206,218.66m^3$) at 10% cover degree, whereas the lowest ($134,074.58m^3$) at 100% cover degree due to changes in evapotranspiration under various cover degrees at the forest. As shown in this study, GeoWEPP model could be efficiently used to investigate runoff characteristics from the coniferous forest watershed and effects of various cover degree scenarios on runoff generation.

A Comparison of Pixel- and Segment-based Classification for Tree Species Classification using QuickBird Imagery (QuickBird 위성영상을 이용한 수종분류에서 픽셀과 분할기반 분류방법의 정확도 비교)

  • This study was conducted to compare classification accuracy by tree species using QuickBird imagery for pixel- and segment-based classifications that have been mostly applied to classify land covers. A total of 398 points was used as training and reference data. Based on this points, the points were classified into fourteen land cover classes: four coniferous and seven deciduous tree species in forest classes, and three non-forested classes. In pixel-based classification, three images obtained by using raw spectral values, three tasseled indices, and three components from principal component analysis were produced. For the both classification processes, the maximum likelihood method was applied. In the pixel-based classification, it was resulted that the classification accuracy with raw spectral values was better than those by the other band combinations. As resulted that, the segment-based classification with a scale factor of 50% provided the most accurate classification (overall accuracy:76% and ${\hat{k}}$ value:0.74) compared to the other scale factors and pixel-based classification.

Distribution of Microflora and Mesofauna in the Forest Soils of Gwangneung Experimental Forest (광릉시험림 산림토양의 미생물상 및 중형동물상 분포)

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the distribution of soil biota across forest types and soil depths in Gwangneung Experimental Forest. We selected 5 sites, which are 3 deciduous- and 2 coniferous forests. The abundance of microflora in these areas was analyzed by the phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) indicators, and the density of mesofauna was measured by the abundance of nematodes and microarthropods. The abundance of soil microflora was higher in the A layer than in the B layer based on the PLFA indicators, but there were no differences between deciduous and coniferous forests. Average density of nematodes was higher in the A horizon than in the B horizon. The density of fungivorous nematodes was higher in the deciduous forests. Mean densities of Collembola and Oribatida were 44% and 42% of microarthropods in soil samples, respectively. The results of microbial PLFA indicators were significantly correlated with the density of their consumers, which reflected that the food web in fungi- and bacteria-based soil developed in this forests. This study suggested that the distribution of soil organisms largely separated by soil depths and was slightly affected by the forest type in the Gwangneung Experimental Forest.

The Analysis of Changes in Forest Status and Deforestation of North Korea's DMZ Using RapidEye Satellite Imagery and Google Earth (RapidEye 위성영상과 구글 어스를 활용한 북한 DMZ의 산림현황 및 산림황폐지 변화 분석)

  • This study was conducted to analyze the forest status and deforestation area changes of the DMZ region in North Korea based on satellite images. Using growing and non-growing season's RapidEye satellite images, land cover of the North Korean DMZ was classified into stocking land(conifer, deciduous, mixed), deforested land(unstocked mountain, cultivated mountain, bare mountain), and non-forest areas. Deforestation rates in the Yeonan-baecheon, Beopdong-Pyeonggang, Heoyang-Geumgang and Tongcheon-Goseong district were calculated as 14.24%, 16.75%, 5.98%, and 16.63% respectively. Forest fire and land use change of forest were considered as the main causes of deforestation of DMZ. Changes in deforestation area were analyzed through Google Earth images. As a results, it was shown that the area of deforestation was on a decreasing trend. This study can be used as basic data for establishing inter-Korean border region's forest cooperation strategies by providing forest spatial information on the North Korea's DMZ.

Stand Characteristics and NVOCs Emission Characteristics in Warm Temperate Evergreen Broadleaf Forests and Pinus thunbergii Forest (난대 상록활엽수림과 곰솔림 임분 특성 및 NVOCs 발산 특성)

  • This study investigated each forest's stand characteristics and the NVOCs emission characteristics for Quercus acuta, Castanopsis sieboldii, Dendropanax trifidus, Camellia Japonica which are major warm temperate evergreen broad-leaved species, and Pinus thunbergii. Data were collected from May 2019 to January 2020. The seasonal temperature and humidity of each research site indicated the typical climatic characteristics of Korea, which are hot and humid in summer and cold and dry in winter. Also, the atmospheric pressure was generally high in winter and higher in autumn and winter than in spring and summer. Overall, the total volume of NVOCs (Natural Volatile Organic Compounds) from the five research sites was the highest in the summer. The concentration of TNVOCs was relatively high in the Dendropanax trifidus forest in spring and winter, the Castanopsis sieboldii forest in the autumn, and the Quercus acuta forest in the summer. According to the results of this study, it was confirmed that the concentrations of NVOCs emission of warm temperate evergreen broad-leaved species such as Quercus acuta, Castanopsis sieboldii, Dendropanax trifidus and Camellia Japonica were not lower but rather higher than Pinus thunbergii. The correlation was positive (+) between NVOCs emission and temperature (r=0.590, P=0.000) or humidity (r=0.655, P=0.000), whereas it was negative (-) between NVOCs emission and atmospheric pressure (r=-0.384, P=0.000) or wind speed (r=-0.263, P=0.018). Among the micrometeological factors, humidity (β=0.507, P=0.000) was found to have the greatest effect on NVOC emission, followed by temperature, atmospheric pressure, and wind speed.

A Study on the Effective Container Transport System for the Relief of Urban Traffic Congestion -A Container Transport Time-Oriented- (도시교통 체증완화를 위한 효율적인 수송체계에 관한 연구 - 컨테이너 수송시간을 중심으로 -)

  • 우리나라에서는 70년대 이후 컨테이너 수송체계가 도입되어 운영되어 왔으나 차량의 급격한 증가와 더불어 컨테이너 수송체계는 도시교통에 있어서 많은 문제를 야기시키는 것으로 논란이 되고 있다. 특히, 부산항은 우리나라 최대의 국제 무역항으로써 전 컨테이너 수송화물의 90%이상을 처리하고 있고, 또한 수출입항으로서 제 역할을 다하고 있으나 낮은 도로율(12.45%)과 산재해 있는 30여개의 Off-Dock CY로 인해서 도심을 통과하는 컨테이너 수송차량은 많은 교통문제를 유발시키고 있다. 본 연구는 1) 부산시에 산재해 있는 30여개의 Off-Dock CY에 이르는 주요 도로상에서 컨테이너 수송량의 신간별 분포에 따라 컨테이너의 운행시간대를 첨두 시간대, 비첨두 시간대 및 심야 시간대로 분류하여 각 시간대별 평균 수송 시간 및 교통 체증으로 인한 수송 지체수준을 확인하였고, 2) 컨테이너 전용부두로 부터 Off-Dock CY에 이르는 도시 고속도로 및 주요간선도로상에서의 수송시간 및 수송 지체수준을 비교 분석하였으며, 3) 마지막으로, 효율적인 컨테이너 수송체계를 위한 최적 수송시간대 및 도로체계를 제시할 수 있었다. 특히, 컨테이너 수송시간 및 지체수준은 각 운행 시간대에 따라 현저한 차이를 보이고 있었는데, 심야 시간대를 이용하여 컨테이너 수송을 할 경우에는 다른 시간대에 비하여 50%정도의 수송시간 절감효과를 기대할 수 있었으며, 도시 고속도로를 이용할 경우에는 도시 간선도로에 비하여 30%정도의 수송시간을 절약할 수 있었다. 따라서 도시지역의 교통체중을 완화시키기 위해서 심야 시간대에 보다 많은 컨테이너 수송차량이 이용할 수 있는 컨테이너 수송체계가 확립되어야 하고, 산재해 있는 Off-Dock CY를 몇개의 ODCY그룹이나 단지까지 컨테이너 전용 고속도로의 건설이 바람직하고 생각된다.리구에서 조사한 결과 $10^{-3}$ M MGBG 단독 처리구에서 에틸렌 생성량이 가장 높았으며, spermidine과 spermine의 함량은 가장 낮았다. 부정근 형성능이 다소 회복된 $10^{-3}$ M MGBG+ $10^{-5}$M spermine 혼합처리구에서의 에틸렌 생성량은 대조구보다는 다소 높게 나타났다. 부정근 회복능이 가장 높았던 $10^{-3}$ M MGBG+ $10^{-5}$ M spermine + $10^{-4}$ M Cocl$_2$ 혼합처리구에서 에틸렌 생성량은 가장 낮게 나타났으며, polyamine 함량은 가장 높게 나타났다.(Cyperaceae), 명아주과(Chenopodiaceae) 같은 풀들이 하구언(estuary)의 해안가에 주로 서식하였던 것으로 나타났다. 이 시기동안에 해양성조류인 와편모류와 담수성 조류가 동시에 다양하게 산출되는 것은 하구언 퇴적환경이었음을 잘 지시해 준다. 제II화분대(고도, 43.72{\sim}3.36\;m$)가 시작되면서 혼합림은 침엽수림으로 바뀌었으며, 낙엽활엽수들의 서식지가 2엽소나무로 대치되면서 침엽수가 주요 수종을 이루었던 것으로 나타났다. 아마도 이런 산림형태는 자연 기후환경변화 뿐만 아니라 인간간섭에 의해 나타난 결과로 생각된다. 이 시기에 경작식물인 벼과(Gramineae), 옥수수(Zea), 메밀(Fagopyrum)과 논밭의 뚝 등지 에서 서식하는 돼지풀(Ambrosia) 등이 처음으로 산출되는 것으로 보아 인간간섭이 행해졌음을 잘 뒷 받침해준다. 또한 담수성 조류는 변함없이 산출되는 반면, 해양성조류인 와편모류가 산출되지 않는 것으로 보아 해안환경에서 다소 멀 어진
