Hypolipidemic Effects of Korean Softwood Components (국내 침엽수재 추출성분의 혈액지질 저하 효과 연구)

  • As a basic study to find bioactive principles for the hypolipidemic effect from natural sources, various biological influences of MeOH extracts of Thuja accidentalis L. and Juniperus chinensis var. horizontalis Nakai on rats were examined. The concentrates obtained from the organic layer and aqueous layer fractions of each species were orally administered to rats and then their effect on the body weight, organ weight, serum lipids profile, and blood glucose concentration were examined. Among the samples tested, the organic layer of Juniperus chinensis var. horizontalis exhibited the possibility of the hypolipidemic effects. The corresponding layer was chromatographed to give three fractions and reexamined their effects on rats. The results demonstrated that the fraction corresponding for the R$_{f}$ 0.4~0.7 which was the mixture of many minor components showed the effect of lowering the blood-lipid bevel effectively without any side effects. Besides, communic acid, identified from and isolated as a major component of the species exhibited the possibe hypolipidemic effects.s.

Diversity of Endophytic Fungi Isolated from Pinus densiflora and Larix kaempferi in Mt. Oser, Korea (충남 오서산에 분포하는 소나무와 일본잎갈나무에서 분리한 내생균의 다양성)

  • Diversity of endophytic fungi of two species associated with host plants, Pinus densiflora and Larix kaempferi in Mt. Oser were investigated. Endophytic fungi were isolated from surface sterilized leaves of the 13 host plants and identified by morphological traits and rDNA ITS sequences analysis. Totally 37 isolates were discovered and identified into 17 taxa. Of them, 59% isolates belonged to Leotiomycetes, 30% isolates Sordariomyetes, 8% isolates Dothideomycetes and 3% isolates Agaricomycetes. Results showed a similar diversity pattern with previous studies. Also, species diversity (H') of endophytic fungi isolated from L. kaempferi was higher than that from P. densiflora. The endophytic species composition showed significant differences between host plants. Particularly, taxon of Lophodermium is a major genus in the host plants. However, critical research of the endophytic species diversities within the genus in Korea is required. The communities of endophytic fungi isolated in this study showed differences in diversities and species composition between host plants.

  • Needle type and growth characteristics of Cryptomeria japonica planted in Cheju, Korea, were investigated and compared with those of the same species distributed in Japan. Needle types were classified into nine lines, and the stands were composed of more than six lines. The trees of the same needle type as Ura-Sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) in Japan showed the best growth in height.

  • 토양수분량과 증발산량은 물 순환과 강우-유출모형의 검증과 개발, 수자원 계획 및 개발, 작물의 소비수량 산정, 수자원의 손실량 산정 등에 다목적으로 이용되는 귀중한 수문자료로서 유역을 대표할 수 있는 적정한 위치에서 정기적으로 측정되어야 자료의 이용성이 크다. 선진 외국에서는 일찌기 자국의 유역특성에 맞는 토양수분량 및 증발산량 관측망을 구축하여 정기적으로 자료를 생산하여 활용하고 있으나, 국내의 경우는 관련기관의 특정 목적에 따라 관측을 수행하고 있을 뿐 유역을 대표할 수 있는 토양수분량 및 증발산량 자료를 생산하고 있지는 않다. 토양수분 및 증발산량은 기상, 유역, 토지피복, 토양, 임상 특성 인자에 따라 그 크기와 특성이 상이하다. 이와 같은 자료의 특성 때문에 토양수분량 및 증발산량 관측망은 반드시 유역의 대표성이 담보될 수 있도록 설계되어야 한다. 이에 따라 본 연구에서는 토양수분 및 증발산량의 조절인자에 대한 대표성을 반영 할 있는 면적 개념의 관측망을 개념화하여 이를 한강 등 5대 권역에 적용하였다. 토양수분 및 증발산량 관측망 설계 시 필요한 설계인자를 산정하기 위해서 "국가수자원관리종합정보시스템(WAMIS)"의 토지이용 자료를 활용하였으며, 그 결과 산림 66.8%, 논 25.98%, 밭 7.14%로 분석되었다. 산림지를 보다 세분화하였을 때 침엽수림 48.55%, 활엽수림 25.36%, 혼효림 27.09%로 분석되었으며, 이를 중권역수로 구분하면 침엽수림 69개, 활엽수림 21개, 혼효림 13개, 논 8개가 된다. 위의 분석 결과를 토대로 토양수분량 증발산량 관측망을 구축한 결과, 한강 권역은 8개소, 낙동강 권역 8개소, 금강 권역 5개소, 섬진강 권역 2개소, 영산강 권역 2개소의 총 25개소로 구축되었다.

Characteristics of Control-Pollinated Progenies of Pinus thunbergii$\times$P. densiflora (해송$\times$소나무 $F_1$ 교잡종의 특성)

  • Seedlings height of hybrids varied depending on mating combinations. Among the progenies from the mating combination, P. thunbergii(CN4)$\times$P. densiflora(KW29) showed the best plant growth. The mean height of this combination was 521 cm at the age of 8 years(yrs), which was 9% higher than rest of the crosses. Seedlings height of progenies using P. thunbergii(JN37) as mother tree showed 28%, 33%, and 29% higher than those of open-pollinated progenies of the mother tree at the ages of 4yrs, 6yrs, and 8yrs, respectively. On the other hand, using P. densiflora (KB5) as father tree showed 45%, 48%, and 32% higher than those of open-pollinated progenies of the father tree. This result may be caused by hybrid vigor.

Application of The Semi-Distributed Hydrological Model(TOPMODEL) for Prediction of Discharge at the Deciduous and Coniferous Forest Catchments in Gwangneung, Gyeonggi-do, Republic of Korea (경기도(京畿道) 광릉(光陵)의 활엽수림(闊葉樹林)과 침엽수림(針葉樹林) 유역(流域)의 유출량(流出量) 산정(算定)을 위한 준분포형(準分布型) 수문모형(水文模型)(TOPMODEL)의 적용(適用))

  • TOPMODEL, semi-distributed hydrological model, is frequently applied to predict the amount of discharge, main flow pathways and water quality in a forested catchment, especially in a spatial dimension. TOPMODEL is a kind of conceptual model, not physical one. The main concept of TOPMODEL is constituted by the topographic index and soil transmissivity. Two components can be used for predicting the surface and subsurface contributing area. This study is conducted for the validation of applicability of TOPMODEL at small forested catchments in Korea. The experimental area is located at Gwangneung forest operated by Korea Forest Research Institute, Gyeonggi-do near Seoul metropolitan. Two study catchments in this area have been working since 1979 ; one is the natural mature deciduous forest(22.0 ha) about 80 years old and the other is the planted young coniferous forest(13.6 ha) about 22 years old. The data collected during the two events in July 1995 and June 2000 at the mature deciduous forest and the three events in July 1995 and 1999, August 2000 at the young coniferous forest were used as the observed data set, respectively. The topographic index was calculated using $10m{\times}10m$ resolution raster digital elevation map(DEM). The distribution of the topographic index ranged from 2.6 to 11.1 at the deciduous and 2.7 to 16.0 at the coniferous catchment. The result of the optimization using the forecasting efficiency as the objective function showed that the model parameter, m and the mean catchment value of surface saturated transmissivity, $lnT_0$ had a high sensitivity. The values of the optimized parameters for m and InT_0 were 0.034 and 0.038; 8.672 and 9.475 at the deciduous and 0.031, 0.032 and 0.033; 5.969, 7.129 and 7.575 at the coniferous catchment, respectively. The forecasting efficiencies resulted from the simulation using the optimized parameter were comparatively high ; 0.958 and 0.909 at the deciduous and 0.825, 0.922 and 0.961 at the coniferous catchment. The observed and simulated hyeto-hydrograph shoed that the time of lag to peak coincided well. Though the total runoff and peakflow of some events showed a discrepancy between the observed and simulated output, TOPMODEL could overall predict a hydrologic output at the estimation error less than 10 %. Therefore, TOPMODEL is useful tool for the prediction of runoff at an ungaged forested catchment in Korea.

Species Composition Dynamics and Seedling Density Along Altitudinal Gradients in Coniferous Forests of Seorak Mountain (설악산 상록침엽수림의 고도별 종조성 및 치수 밀도 변화)

  • The vertical distribution of vegetation can be classified according to the altitudinal gradient and the distribution of species along this gradient. The purpose of this study was to analyze the vegetation structure, species composition, dimensional density, and change according to altitude. These data illustrate the distribution of coniferous forest by altitude. By order of importance, the vegetation structure of this mixed forest consisted of Abies nephrolepis (12.2), Pinus koraiensis (10.86), and Acer komarovii (8.11). As a result of species composition according to the altitude, A. nephrolepis and Maianthemum bifolium increased in importance with increasing altitude. Tripterygium regelii emerged between 1,400 m and 1,600 m, which indicates that forest gaps were frequent at that elevation. The species diversity index was the highest from 1,400-1,500 m and coincided with the presence of forest gaps. The changes in A. nephrolepis of evergreen conifers increased significantly from 402 ± 5.4 ha.-1 to 528 ± 11.6 ha.-1 for two years, and decreased from 57 ± 1.3 ha.-1 to 56 ± 1.6 ha.-1 for P. koraiensis. The density of A. nephrolepis and P. koraiensis seedlings significantly increased at 1,500-1,600 m. The results of this study can be used as a basis to identify the mast seeding year with the increase or decrease of seedlings. In addition to documenting the evergreen conifer population of the Seorak Mountain, these results can be built upon for future monitoring of seedlings mortality.

Input, Output and Budget of Nitrogen and Sulphur in Forested Watershed Ecosystems (산림 소유역 생태계에서 질소와 황의 유입량, 유출량과 물질수지)

  • In order to elucidate the budget and cycling of Nitrogen and Sulfur, essential elements and principal constituents of acid rain, their input through precipitation, and their output by streamflow were quantified in coniferous and deciduous forested watersheds, using combination of nutrient concentration and hydrological analysis, in Kwangnung Experimental Forest from July 1991 to December 1993. Amount of annual mean precipitation was $12,916\;ton{\cdot}ha^{-1}{\cdot}yr^{-1}$, annual mean runoff $5,094\;ton{\cdot}ha^{-1}{\cdot}yr^{-1}$(39%), $7,467\;ton{\cdot}ha^{-1}{\cdot}yr^{-1}$(59%) in coniferous and deciduous forest watersheds, respectively. Amounts of annual input of $N({NO_3}^-+{NH_4}^+)$ and ${SO_4}^{2-}$ through preciptation were 12.5, $81.72\;kg{\cdot}ha^{-1}{\cdot}yr^{-1}$, repectively. Annual output via runoff of $N({NO_3}^-+{NH_4}^+)$ and ${SO_4}^{2-}$ were 0.06, $39.23\;ton{\cdot}ha^{-1}{\cdot}yr^{-1}$ in the coniferous forest watershed ecosystem, and 0.15, $55.46\;ton{\cdot}ha^{-1}{\cdot}yr^{-1}$ in the deciduous one, respectively. On the basis of annual nutrient input and output, the annual budget of $N({NO_3}^-+{NH_4}^+)$ and ${SO_4}^{2-}$ were +12.46, $+42.49\;ton{\cdot}ha^{-1}{\cdot}yr^{-1}$ in the coniferous forest watershed, and +11.35, $+26.26\;ton{\cdot}ha^{-1}{\cdot}yr^{-1}$ in the deciduous one. Thus $N({NO_3}^-+{NH_4}^+)$ and ${SO_4}^{2-}$ were accumulated in both forested watershed ecosystems.

Possibility of Substituting Softwoods for Tropical Hardwoods of Door Frames (침엽수재(針葉樹材)의 남양활엽수(南洋闊葉樹) 문틀재(材) 대체(代替) 가능성(可能性) 조사(調査))

  • Since the supply of the Southeast Asian tropical timber decreases and its price steeply increases in the international lumber market, door and window frame manufacturers in this country are eagerly searching for their substitutes. This is the first step to replace Southeast Asian tropical timber by low grade North American softwoods, whose reliable and steady supply is expected, but their appearances are not as good as the tropical timber. In this study, knot distribution on the softwood boards and their warp were examined The yield and production cost were also calculated. The average numbers of knots on a door frame were 7.2 for Douglas-fir and 3.4 for Western hemlock. Only 11% of the knots of Douglas-fir door frames are larger than 5cm in diameter, while are 35% of the knots of Western hemlock. The deformations of door frames, after 2 months air-drying, were measured with a warp table. The deformations of Western hemlock door frames were mostly less than 6mm, while those of Douglas-fir distributed in the range of 0.5 and 9.5mm. The yield of Western hemlock is higher than that of Douglas-fir. It can be concluded that the door frames made of the softwoods are compatible with those made of the tropical timber in most aspects except appearance.

Analysis of the Location Environment of the Sub-alpine Coniferous Forest in National Parks Using GIS - Focusing on Abies koreana - (GIS를 활용한 국립공원 아고산대 침엽수림의 입지환경 분석 - 구상나무를 대상으로 -)

  • It was a case study to use as a basic data for efficient the preservation and management of subalpine coniferous forest in national parks. It is based on inhabitation condition of 210 individuals of Abies koreana Wilson that was found through local investigation in the sub-alpine zone of Jirisan National Park and Songnisan National Park. It analyzed the effect of the geographical location and topographical features, which are the basics of location environment, on the growth of A. koreana. The variables related to the growth of A. koreana are tree height and diameter at breast height. Topographical features include geographical longitude, altitude above sea level, slope of the mountains, aspect that describes the direction in which a slope faces and topographical wetness index. Topographical features were extracted through GIS spatial analysis. It used canonical correlation analysis to estimate whether the two variables groups have related to each other and how much they are related, if any, and estimated the effect of the geographical and topographical features on the growth structure of A. koreana using multiple regression analysis. The tree height and diameter at breast height that represent the growth structure of A. koreana show greater relation to geographical latitude distribution than topographical feature and the geographical and topographical factors show greater relation to diameter at breast height than tree height. The growth structure's variable and geographical and topographical variable of A. koreana have meaningful relation and the result shows that geographical and topographical variables explain 18.1% of the growth structure. The variables that affect the diameter at breast height of A. koreana are geographical latitude, topographical wetness index, aspect and altitude, which are put in order of statistical significance. The higher the latitude is, the smaller the diameter at breast height. Depending on the topographical feature, it becomes bigger. The variable that affects the tree height is topographical wetness index, which was the only meaningful variable. Overall, the tree height and diameter at breast height that are related to the growth structure of A. koreana are affected by geographical and topographical feature. It showed that the geographical feature affected it the most. Especially the effect of water among the topographical features is expected to be bigger than the other topographical factors. Based on the result, it is expected that geographical and topographical feature is an important factor for the growth structure of A. koreana. Even though it considered only the geographical and topographical features and used spatial analysis data produced by GIS, the research results will be useful for investigating and researching the growth environment of coniferous forest inhabiting in sub-alpine zone of national parks and are expected to be used as basic data for establishing measures to efficiently manage and preserve evergreen needleaf tree such as A. koreana.
