It is very important to pay careful attention to construction of earthwork/tunnel transition zone for railway. The transition zone of the railway is the section which roadbed stiffness is suddenly varied. Differences in stiffness have dynamic effects and these increase the forces in the track and the extent of deformation. In this study, performance of transition zone was investigated through the field tests. The wheel loads and sleeper settlement were measured after installing field testing sections.
In this study, as a part of research which is to make 50kg NSI PC sleeper Turnout, the main objective of this study are the development of the PC sleeper and the applications H-type guard, 1/40 cant in the turnout, the same position of the switch, incident angle=0, the same skelton. we completed development and laid 50kg NSI PC sleeper turnout at the Shintanjin station. Now we are inspecting the turnout in site every weeks.
The lateral stiffness of the track structure is very important mechanical property to prevent the track buckling and progress of misalignment. The increasing methods of the lateral stiffness of the track structure are the following; increases of the lateral ballast resistance, and increases of the lateral stiffness of the track panel. In order to increase the lateral stiffness of the tack panel, some of the sleepers resist together against the lateral movement can be the most economical and mechanical method. In this paper, H-typed sleeper developed to solve this problem is introduced and the mechanical advantages of this sleeper are investigated.

The major noise source for the conventional train is the rolling noise caused by the interaction of the wheels and rails during the train passage on the tangent track. In order to control the rolling noise, the noise radiated from wheels, rails and sleepers should be analyzed and predicted. In this paper, a prediction method of wheel/rail rolling noise generated by the roughness of the wheel/rail surface is described, where the method is considering the effect of noise radiated by sleepers and the effect of ground. The method is applied to the Korean railway system, and the sound pressure level (SPL) predicted by the proposed method is compared with the measured SPL. Overall. the result shows good agreement between the predicted and measured values.

Response of the rail surface is an important factor for the train safety and comfortable travel, and evaluation of vibration at the area along a rail is an important factor for the vibration. The dominant method to reduce the vibration that reach the ground is installing vibration absorber between rall and the under structure. In this paper, we evaluated the vibration reducing effect of using vibration control sleeper pads to slave and earth at certain distance from the sleepers.
It was estimated that the anti-vibration measures at the source location of railroad are the most active and effective ones. Among CWR(Continuously Welded Rail), elastic rail fastener, floating slab, ballast mat, under sleeper pad, etc. like these various kinds of measures in the source, under sleeper pad as an anti-vibration measure was constructed at the railroad track supporting structures in the Jeon-la Line. In this study, through the field measurement of vibration at the railroad track supporting structures and nearby the ground, the vibration reduction effect of under sleeper pad were evaluated by insertion loss. As a result, vibration reduction effects were 5.0∼12.5㏈ on the concrete slab of the bridge, 3.9∼7.5㏈ on the ground nearby the bridge respectively.
The design of sleeper in high-speed railway turnouts is complicated and time-consuming because the length and loading position of sleepers change continuously along the turnout line. It is, therefore, necessary to develop an automated design program which can design automatically the PSC sleepers in turnout region. In this study, a computer program for automatic design of turnout sleepers was developed based on graphic user-interface(GUI) environment. The structural analysis is performed considering the varying loading position of vehicular wheels. The sleepers are treated as located on elastic supports. The user can choose the desirable shape of sleepers before starting the detail design. The present study allows more realistic and automatic design of PSC sleepers in high-speed railway turnouts.
Ballast is an important component of railway track structures. The granular ballast can be modelled using [mite or discrete element methods. The DE method has advantages to enable us to analyze the microstructure of granular materials and to exhibit information which cannot be assessed using FE methods. In this paper, sleeper, the ballast, and ballast mat in the high-speed railroad line are modelled using two-dimensional discrete circle and line elements. The stress transferred from the sleeper via the ballast to the subgrade is analyzed. In addition, the shape and angle of stress distribution of ballast bed is evaluated with different boundary conditions for the high-speed railroad line.

In this paper, the process of development of resilient sleepers, which improves the train safety, passenger comfort and reduces the noise and vibration, is presented. To optimize the bonding method between elastic pad and PC sleeper, special pad shape like arrow is adopted and is applied in manufacturing. Bonding strength and reduction effects of vibration of the resilient sleepers are experimentally investigated. From the experiment results, it is investigated that the bonding strenth is enough to satisfaction the criteria and the vibration characteristic is also more effective for sleeper with elastic pad than that in ordinary PC form. These results indicate that the elastic pad can reduce possibility of rail-corrugations and thus resulting in the reduction of maintenance costs.
