Adolescent Friendships : Differences in Function, Structure, and Satisfaction by Internet and Real Life Variables (청소년의 인터넷 중독과 친구관계의 특성)

  • This study examined differences in function, structure, and satisfaction of adolescent friendships by differing patterns of internet usage and of real life versus internet friendships. Subjects were 396 male and female 10th grade students. Data were collected with structured questionnaires and analyzed by SPSS. Findings were that the internet functioned as a major field of interpersonal relationships for Korean adolescents. Among 3 types of internet usage patterns, pursuit of interpersonal relationship, constituted most of the functioning and the most intimate friendships and game pleasure had the fewest and least intimate friendships both in real life and on the internet. Subjects addicted to the internet had the most functioning friendships and the highest level of intimacy in friendships. As the level of internet addiction increased, the level of satisfaction in friendships in real life decreased while the level of satisfaction of friendships through the internet increased.

The Mediating Effect of Resilience and Empathy on the Relation between Humanity and Friendship of the Early Adolescents (초기 청소년의 인간애와 친구관계에서 적응유연성과 공감능력의 매개효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine resilience and empathy on the relation between humanity and friendship of the early adolescents using structural equation modeling. The subjects were total 332 students of the 5th and 6th grade in elementary school and 1st and 2nd grade in junior school. The data were collected by means of the self-report questionnaire. The results of this study were as follows: Firstly, the direct effect of humanity on resilience, empathy, and friendship was found. Resilience also influence friendship directly, but empathy did not affect friendship. Secondly, humanity had influence on friendship partially mediated by resilience, but not mediated by empathy. This result shows that resilience was better mediated between humanity and friendship than empathy. Additionally, sex differences were found on empathy, but the differences were not found on resilience. The results revealed that the adolescents who scored high on humanity were better at friendship and when the higher humanity score was, the higher level of resilience was found, and this had an indirect effect on friendship quality.

The Effects of Conflict Resolution Group Counseling on Conflict Resolution Strategy and Friendship Quality of Children (갈등해결 집단상담이 아동의 갈등해결전략과 친구관계의 질에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to verify the effects of a conflict resolution program on conflict resolution strategies and friendship quality of children. The subjects of this study were higher-grader students of elementary school. Out of the students, 18 were into the experimental group, while the rest were into the control-group. The experimental design was the pretest-posttest control group design, and the 50-minutes conflict resolution program was treated for the experimental group twice per week (a total of 11 sessions). The scale of conflict resolution strategies presented by Ha Ji Wean (2005) and the scale of friendship quality of children presented by Rhee Un Hai and Koh Yun Joo (1999) were used as the measurement tools in this study. In order to supply the limitations of quantitative data, the journals of group participation of each session and the participation reports after the completion of the program were qualitatively analyzed. The results of hypotheses verification were as follows; First, conflict resolution strategies conflict was significant difference in enhancement of the compromising-integrating strategy and the obliging strategy, and reduction of the dominating strategy. Second, friendship quality was significant difference in enhancement of the friendship positive function, and friendship satisfaction, and in reduction of the friendship negative aspect, The results of the study confirmed that the conflict resolution program affected both conflict resolution strategies and the friendship quality of children.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between peer victimization by peers, bullying, and friendships, with a focus on friendship network, friendship quality, and friends' characteristics. The subjects were 678 fifth and sixth grade primary school children recruited from a public school in Bucheon city. The peer nomination index was used to assess peer victimization, bullying, and friendship network. In addition, children themselves reported on the quality of their friendships using the Friendship Quality Scale. The results showed that victimization by peers was influenced by friendship network size, support, and victimization of friends, whereas bullying was explained by support and the bullying behaviors of friends.

Effects of Self-Esteem, Relationships with Parents and Peer Relationships on Adolescents' Internet Addiction (자아존중감, 부모관계, 친구관계가 청소년의 인터넷 중독에 미치는 영향)

  • This study examined the effects of self-esteem, relationships with parents and peer relationships on adolescents' internet addiction among middle school students. Data were derived from 439 students in the 8th grade. The results of the study showed that internet addiction was higher in male adolescents compared to female adolescents. This study identified that internet addiction of male adolescents was affected by low levels of self-esteem and peer relationships. Poor relationship with parents and low levels of peer relationships were factors influencing internet addiction among female adolescents. It might be useful to improve interpersonal relations based on peers' interactions and to strengthen family relations in order to prevent internet addiction. In addition, it would help to develop educational programs and youth programs for preventing adolescents' internet addiction.

Relationship satisfaction and Self-disclosure in Real-space fiend relation and Cyber-space friend relation (실제공간과 사이버공간 친구관계에서의 관계만족도, 자기노출)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the degree of relationship satisfaction and self-disclosure in real-space friend relations and cyber-space friend relations. The sample was 248 middle and high school students, and 107 undergraduates. The main findings of this study are as follows: 1) Relationship satisfaction is significantly higher in cyber-space friend relations than in real-space friend relations. 2) In contrast to relationship satisfaction, self-disclosure is significantly higher in real-space friend relations than in cyber-space friend relations. 3) Self-disclosure differs significantly in terms of grade, gender, number of friends, communication method, and daily internet usage.

Relationship between Friendship, Social Competence, and Social Pretend Play: Comparison between Korean-and Anglo-American Preschoolers (사회상상놀이와 친구관계 및 사회적 능력과의 관련연구: 한국계 미국아동과 백인계 미국아동의 비교)

  • 본 연구는 사회적 능력 및 친구관계에서의 개인차가 아동의 집단상상놀이에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 한국계 미국아동과 백인계 미국아동의 비교분석를 통해 알아보았다. 연구대상은 46명의 한국계 미국아동과 46명의 백인계 미국아동으로 두집단의 평균연령은 모두 4세였다. 아동의 사회적 능력은 교사에 의해 평가되었으며 친구관계는 사회적 측정법을 통하여 측정되었다. 아동의 상상놀이는 실내외 자유놀이시간동안 시간표집법으로 관찰되었다. 연구결과에 의하면 두 문화에서 모두 집단상상놀이에 빈번히 참여하는 아동은 교사에 의해 사교성이 높은 것으로 평가되었으며, 한국계 아동의 경우 이 아동들은 어려움점수가 높은 것으로 나타났다. 또한 백인계 아동은 한국계 아동에 비해 상호지명된 친구수가 많은 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 한국계, 백인계 아동 모두 친구가 많은 아동일수록 사회상상놀이에 더 빈번히 참여하는 것으로 나타났다.

Friendship Quality of Aggressive Children and Their Best Friends (공격적 아동과 가장 친한 친구의 친구관계 질)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlations among physical, relational aggression and friendship quality and the similarity of perceptions of friendship quality between friends. Moreover, APIM was applied to examine the actor and partner effects of aggression on friendship quality. The subjects were 339 5th grade children recruited from 2 public primary schools located in Gyeonggi province. The results demonstrated that there were significant correlations between friendship quality and both types of aggression. The perceptions of help, intimacy, emotional stability, and conflict between friends were significantly similar. Finally, there were significant self-effects of physical aggression on friendship conflict. Moreover, there were self-and partner-effects of relational aggression on friendship conflict.

The Effects of Individual Psychology and Family Variables on Adolescents' Peer Relationships (남녀 청소년의 또래관계에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the gender differences of peer relationship and to analyze the effects of the individual psychology and family variables on adolescents' peer relationships. The subject of this study were 1,444 students of second and third grade of middle school who reside in Seoul and 1,397 self reported questionnaires were used for final analysis. The major results of this study were as follows. First, the findings suggested that there were significant differences between female and male adolescents in peer relationships. Female adolescents' friendship quality was higher than male adolescents', and male adolescents' peer victimization was higher than female adolescents'. Second, higher self-esteem, positive parenting behavior, higher level of parental supervision and lower level of interparental conflict predicted higher level of friendship quality among male and female adolescents. Higher depression, lower self-esteem, positive parenting behavior, lower level of parental supervision and higher level of interparental conflict predicted higher peer victimization among male and female adolescents.

The Effects of School Adolescents' Personal Relationship on Delinquency: Focusing on Mediator Effect of Game Addiction (학교청소년의 대인관계가 비행에 미치는 영향: 게임중독의 매개효과를 중심으로)

  • This study aimed to examine the mediate effects of game addiction on the delinquency among school adolescents. In order to achieve the research purpose, secondary data was used which is the data by 8,516 people researched for 'A study on mental health improvement policy for children and adolescents II' among NYPI cross-sectional analysis provided by Korean Children Adolescents Data Archive and the collected data was analyzed using SPSS 21.0 and AMOS 21.0. The major findings were as follows. First, the better relationship with family and teachers led to lower level of game addiction and delinquency. However, in terms of relationship with friends, better relationship led to lower level of game addiction but higher level of delinquency. Second, as a result of verifying mediator effect of game addiction by decomposing the effects of relationship with family, teachers and friends on delinquency, they all demonstrated negative mediator effect. Based on the results I discussed social welfare intervention methods for game addiction in order to understand and prevent school adolescents' delinquency.
