Patients who lost molars from dental caries or periodontitis have difficulty in maintaining their vertical dimension because their incisors and premolars also show vertical tooth movement. Missing posterior molars leads to occlusal interference and collapse of occlusal plane due to extrusion of opposite teeth and tipping of adjacent teeth. When this condition persists over long time, mandible moves forward, so it causes mobility and labioversion of upper incisors. This progress cannot be stopped spontaneously and the situation gets worse and worse. Therefore, for a patient with pathologic teeth migration caused by chronic periodontitis, interdisciplinary approach which is including periodontal treatment, orthodontic teeth alignment and prosthetic restoration of missing molars is required. This case report shows successful multidisciplinary approach to a patient who lost vertical dimension due to severe dental caries and periodontitis.

Lichen planus is an immune-mediated mucocutaneous disease, affects more frequently middle-aged Caucasian women and makes signs and symptoms in the oral mucosa. Cutaneous lichen planus lesions cause itching but they are self-limiting, oral lichen planus lesions are usually chronic, recalcitrant to treatment and potentially premalignant in some cases. Although, oral lichen planus is non-plaque related disease, they possess particular problems because plaque control is complicated by pain and bleeding and might cause plaque-related disease. The resulting condition comprises accumulations of plaque, which again can influence the progress of oral lichen planus with burning sensation, spontaneous gingival bleeding. Thus, it should be noted that both medication and supportive periodontal treatment are essential for the remission of the lesions. This case report introduces topical corticosteroid therapy and supportive periodontal treatment including intensive oral hygiene procedures to obtain an improvement of subjective symptoms and objective changes and to prevent relapse the lesions.
Objectives: Internal exposure to certain heavy metals is thought to be associated with periodontitis. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the relationship between blood levels of heavy metals and periodontitis among the Korean population. Methods: Data from the 2012 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey was analyzed. A total of 1,968 adults aged 19 years or above were included. Logistic regression analysis was performed to assess the association between blood lead levels of lead, cadmium, and mercury, and periodontitis. Confounders such as sex, age, brushing frequency, smoking, etc. were adjusted. Results: Blood levels of lead, cadmium, and mercury showed a significant relationship with periodontitis in a crude model of logistic regression analysis. However, participants with the highest blood levels of cadmium showed higher risk of periodontitis, than those with lower blood levels of cadmium (OR: 1.73; 95% CI: 1.11-2.70) after adjusting for the confounders. Conclusions: High blood levels of cadmium may be associated with periodontitis among the Korean population.
Background: Research on the association between renal disease and periodontal conditions has yet to yield definitive results. In this study, we analyzed whether periodontal disease increases the risk of developing renal disease using Korean national cohort data over a period of 11 years. Methods: From 2002 to 2015, a retrospective follow-up investigation was conducted on the 203,538 Korean population using the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort. Periodontal disease and renal disease were identified through diagnoses using the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th revision (ICD-10) codes. The assessment of periodontal status involved considering the number of dental visits related to periodontal disease during the baseline 3-year period. Results: During the 11-year follow-up period, renal disease occurred in 19,868 out of the total 203,538 individuals. After adjusting for age, gender, income, smoking, drinking, physical activity, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, hypercholesterolemia, ischemic heart disease, and advanced periodontal treatment, periodontal disease increased the risk of renal disease occurrence by 1.04 times (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] = 1.04, 95% CI = 1.01 to 1.08). Additionally, a higher frequency of dental visits attributed to periodontal disease was associated with an increased risk of renal disease, exhibiting a dose-response trend (aHR = 1.02, 95% CI = 1.00 to 1.06 for once; aHR = 1.08, 95% CI = 1.04 to 1.13 for two times; aHR = 1.11, 95% CI = 1.03 to 1.21 for three times). Conclusions: Our data confirmed that periodontal disease is associated witha higher incidence of renal disease.

Purpose: This study aimed to assess the antimicrobial efficacy of an 810-nm infrared diode laser with indocyanine green (ICG) against Staphylococcus aureus on sandblasted, large grit, and acid-etched (SLA) titanium surfaces, comparing its effectiveness with alternative chemical decontamination modalities. Materials and Methods: Biofilms of S. aureus ATCC 25923 were cultured on SLA titanium disks for 48 hours. The biofilms were divided into five treatment groups: control, chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX), tetracycline (TC), ICG, and 810-nm infrared diode laser with ICG (ICG-PDT). After treatment, colony-forming units were quantified to assess surviving bacteria, and viability was confirmed through confocal laser-scanning microscope (CLSM) imaging. Results: All treated groups exhibited a statistically significant reduction in S. aureus (P < 0.05), with notable efficacy in the CHX, TC, and ICG-PDT groups (P < 0.01). While no statistical difference was observed between TC and CHX, the ICG-PDT group demonstrated superior bacterial reduction. CLSM images revealed a higher proportion of dead bacteria stained in red within the ICG-PDT groups. Conclusion: Within the limitations, ICG-PDT effectively reduced S. aureus biofilms on SLA titanium surfaces. Further investigations into alternative decontamination methods and the clinical impact of ICG-PDT on peri-implant diseases are warranted.
Objectives: The objective of this paper was to estimate a South Korean's lifetime dental expenditures for periodontitis. Methods: For our study, we collected data from the Korea Health Panel Survey (KHPS), from 2010 to 2016. The outpatient dental care data of 1,919,608 samples of periodontitis were extracted using R version 3.0 and estimations of lifetime dental expenditures for them were generated using Excel. Results: Over 50% of the lifetime dental expenditure of South Koreans was spent for periodontitis, and incurred after the age of 40. The results showed that an estimate of average per capita lifetime dental expenditure for men (approximately 13 million won) was greater than that for women (approximately 8.8 million won) for periodontitis. Conclusions: Efficient methods for the prevention and management of periodontitis are necessary, and a new paradigm of health care system is required to reduce dental expenditure through its prevention.

Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) or second hand smoke or passive smoking has become a well-known risk factor for various health hazards in nonsmoking adults as well as active smokers. In Korea, there have been few studies concerning about the impact of ETS on periodontal health. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the association between exposure to passive smoking and prevalence of periodontitis using Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) in 2008 and 2009. The Fourth KNHANES data was employed from 2008~2009. The final sample size was 4,669 adults aged over 18 years, who were never-smoker and had the information about ETS both at home and in the workplace, urine analysis and periodontal examination by Community Periodontal Index (CPI). Periodontitis was defined as CPI codes ${\geq}3$. Data were analyzed using PASW Statistics 18.0. The sociodemographic and behavioral factors were adjusted as confounders. Overall, 17.1% (male 16.4%, female 83.6%) of the participants were exposed to ETS. The mean concentration of cotinine in those exposed ETS was significantly higher than that in unexposed people ($46.92{\mu}g/ml$ versus $19.34{\mu}g/ml$, p<0.001). Participants exposed to ETS were more likely to have periodontitis than those unexposed after adjusting for potential confounding variables. ETS is associated with the prevalence of periodontitis in Korean adults. This may suggest that patients with periodontitis or periodontal surgery should be protected from smokers or smoking places.

Purpose: Patients usually suffer from pain and discomfort after oral surgery and their consumption of food is severely affected. Accordingly, the patients' quality of life reduce significantly. The aim of this study was to analyze patient satisfaction on the nutritional supplement drinks following periodontal surgery. Materials and Methods: Total 90 patients who underwent periodontal surgery were recruited and commercially available nutritional drinks were provided. Group I received two bottles per each meal for 2 days, Group II had one bottle per each meal for 3 days, and Group III had no drinks. The survey for the patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) were given at the next visit for the removal of sutures. Results: The result of PROMs showed the nutrition drink was easy to intake, appeared to help the healing and can be a satisfying supplement for the meals. Conclusion: Nutritional drinks appeared to help the healing after periodontal surgeries and supported the food intake. Also, it was helpful for the patients in nutritional supply and psychological stability.
The purpose of this study to grasp the effects of the stress coping method on the periodontal disease in order to provide raw data for the studies on the development of the training for effective stress copying method resulting in improvement in prevention, occurrence, and progression of periodontal disease. Data were collected from total of 326 subjects in their forties and fifties, during the period from March to October 2011. Using questionnaire and examination of periodontal health, and were analyzed using frequency, t-test, multivariate analysis of variance, multiple regression by SPSS ver. 19.0 (IBM Co., USA). The higher emotion-focused stress coping ($\beta$=0.341), the higher the gingival index, the higher the emotion-focused stress coping ($\beta$=0.239) the deeper the pocket depth, the higher the emotion-focused stress coping ($\beta$=0.158) the higher clinical attachment loss, showed statistically significant positive association. This study suggests that the dental clinic institute needs to implement education program including stress management and coping method improvement in order to prevent periodontal disease and make the occurrence and progression to be managed by professionals.
The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the relationship between periodontal health condition and the results of a new method such as Cariview which could evaluate the acidity of dental biofilms. Fifty four subjects more than 20 years old were selected for the candidates of this study. The periodontal health conditions of the candidates were divided into 4 groups according to the assessment of X-ray and Quantitative Light-induced Fluorescence-Digital (QLF-D; Inspektor Research Systems BV) images; gingivitis, slight periodontitis, moderate periodontitis, severe periodontitis. The biofilm acidogenicity of each subject was examined using Cariview (All in ONE BIO) according to manufacturer's instruction, and the Cariview score was calculated. The mean differences of Cariview score between 4 groups of periodontal health condition were examined by ANCOVA test with the covariance of decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) index. As a result, the mean Cariview score was different, however it was not significantly different from the 4 groups (p=0.12). The mean score was the lowest in the gingivitis group ($40.54{\pm}11.01$), and the highest in slight periodontitis group ($57.26{\pm}20.51$). In conclusion, the significant mean differences were not confirmed in Cariview score according to the periodontal health condition.
