Purpose. The aim of this study was to evaluate the proximal contact with a dental floss compared to a celluloid strip and a metal strip in normal dental arch and investigate what the most effective method for measuring is. Materials and methods. The subjects of this study was consisted with 20 healthy adults (10 males and 10 females) who had normal dentition. A dentist with more than 5 years of clinical experience evaluated the proximal contacts using a dental floss method, a celluloid strip method, and a metal strip method. Statistical analysis were performed by the use of Mann-Whitney U test. A P-value < .05 was considered statistically significant in all analysis. In addition, in the evaluation of proximal contact using a dental floss, the measurement of proximal contact using a celluloid strip and a metal strip was compared. Results. 80 % of all proximal contact was proper. Proper proximal contact was observed at the posterior area compared to the anterior area (P < .05). And male had proper proximal contact at the anterior area, female had proper proximal contact at the posterior area (P < .05). The consistency analysis between the results of the celluloid strip and the metal strip experiment on the results obtained from the floss using the consistency scale Kappa index shows that using celluloid strip is more advantageous than using the metal strip. Conclusion. Only 80% of all proximal contact was proper. Using celluloid strips with various thickness for evaluating of proximal contact is considered to be helpful for accurate measuring of proximal contact.
Objectives: We sought to evaluate the mitigating effect of using floss and interdental brushes on periodontal health inequality. Methods: This study was based on data acquired from the Seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES VII; 2016-2018). We included 11,359 participants aged ≥19 years in the final analysis. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed using socioeconomic characteristics, health behavior, health status, and periodontitis status. We analyzed differences in the prevalence of periodontitis according to household income stratified by the use of floss and interdental brush. Results: In the multivariable logistic regression model, the lowest income group had 1.304 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.08-1.58) odds ratios for periodontitis than the highest income group. In the interdental brush nonusers or floss nonusers, the lowest income group had significantly higher odds of developing periodontitis. However, we found no significant differences in the periodontitis prevalence between the income groups among the interdental brush users. In the 65-year-old or older group, the same result was observed in the interdental brush and floss users. Conclusions: The results suggest that the use of floss and interdental brushes could alleviate periodontal health inequality.
Periodontal diseases occur from the interplay between increased bacterial response and the response of the host immune system over time. Anxiety and depression can impair immunological defense mechanisms, causing accumulation of periodontopathogens and thus exacerbating periodontal disease. We investigated the relationship of anxiety and depression to periodontal diseases in Korean women. In this study, 3,551 women aged ${\geq}19$ years were evaluated based on data from the first year (2010) of the Fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The analysis of the factors that caused periodontal diseases revealed that dental floss or interdental toothbrush nonuse behaviors have been shown to increase the risk of periodontal disease (odds ratio [OR], 1.49; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.14~1.95). After adjusting for conditions such as age, marital status, income, educational level, economic activity, diabetes mellitus, smoking, drinking, and frequencies of toothbrushing and interdental cleaning, we found that anxiety and depression increased the risk of developing periodontal diseases (OR, 1.47; 95% CI, 1.04~2.09). People with anxiety and depression have a higher prevalence of periodontal diseases than people without anxiety and depression. Thus, periodic periodontal care and effective self-care education are needed to manage periodontal diseases.
The aim of the study was to observe the oral environment of smokers and to examine the importance and necessity of using oral care products for smokers. The questionnaires and experiments were conducted to 12 students of smokers and 12 of nonsmokers in Kangwon National University. The use of oral care products has been shown to improve the oral health of smokers overall and improve the oral environment. Providing training on oral hygiene products will help motivate smokers.
The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the relationship between regular interdental cleaning and periodontal condition. A total of 319 pregnant women were recruited at 21 to 24 weeks of gestation. Information on demographics, health status and health behaviors including regulary use of interdental cleaning aids, that can influence periodontal condition was collected. Full mouth periodontal probing was performed. Periodontitis was defined as CAL of 4.0 mm or greater on 2 or more sites not on the same tooth. Gingivitis was defined as 15 percent and more sites showed bleeding on probing. Gingival crevice fluid sample was collected for bacterial analysis. We studied a total of 319 subjects, comprised of 116 subjects who use interdental cleaning device regularly and 203 subjects who didn't. Subjects who do not use interdental cleaning regularly had 2.3 times higher risk of gingivitis and 2.7 times of periodontitis, 2.3 times more amount of P. gingivalis. There was a significant relationship between regular interdental cleaning and periodontal condition in Korea.

Objectives: This study was carried out to investigate the effect of fluoride application after dental prophylaxis by the type of dental floss. Methods: Artificial caries lesion was made on the surface of cow's permanent teeth having sound enamel surface and vickers hardness number(VHN) was measured. Specimens were classified into APF gel group and artificial saliva group. Each group was divided into waxed floss group and unwaxed flossed group. All specimens were immersed into the artificial saliva for one minute and dental flossing was applied to waxed or unwaxed floss. After washing and drying, APF gel groups were applied with fluoride for four minutes and artificial saliva groups were immersed into the artificial saliva for four minutes. After treatment, specimens were measured by VHN and surface conditions of enamel were confirmed by scanning electron microscopy(SEM). Results: VHN of waxed flossing and fluoride application group increased to $6.78{\pm}2.75$. VHN of unwaxed flossing and fluoride application group increased to $7.36{\pm}2.51$. There was no significant difference between waxed and unwaxed groups(p>0.05). VHN of waxed flossing and artificial saliva group increased to $1.07{\pm}2.84$. VHN of waxed flossing and artificial saliva group increased to $1.05{\pm}3.13$. There was no significant difference between waxed and unwaxed groups(p>0.05). There was significant increase in VHN between waxed/unwaxed flossing and fluoride application. However, waxed/unwaxed flossing with artificial saliva showed no significant VHN increase. SEM demonstrated no residue on the enamel surface in the waxed flossing groups. Conclusions: No difference was found in the remineralization of enamel by waxed flossing or unwaxed flossing.
Purpose. The purpose of this study is to compare five interdental cleansing products' effectiveness on removing artificial dental plaque on the interdental space of zirconia crowns. Materials and methods. A model with abutments on the right mandibular second premolar and first molar were prepared. 10 zirconia crowns for each abutment were fabricated. After applying artificial dental plaque between the zirconia crowns, a single clinician attempted to remove the plaque with five products: interdental toothbrush, end-tuft toothbrush, dental floss, Easypick, Water pik. They were conducted 10 times per group. The aspect and area of removed surfaces were analyzed using images taken with a digital camera. One factor analysis of variance was performed as a statistical analysis, and a post-hoc test was performed using the Scheffé method (P < .05). Results. There were differences in the area and the pattern according to the characteristics of the products. The largest area, including the marginal portion, was removed in the dental floss group. Interdental toothbrush group was the most effective in removing the dental plaque at the marginal portion. Easypick was less effective than the interdental toothbrush. The end-tuft toothbrush showed better results than other products in cleansing mesiobuccal and distobuccal area, but could not cleanse the area directly below the contact point. In Water pik group, artificial dental plaque was scarcely removed. The removal rate of artificial dental plaque was in the order of floss (69.47%), end-tuft toothbrush (49.36%), interdental toothbrush (44.20%), Easy pick (13.04%), and Water pik (0.59%). Conclusion. Dental floss showed the highest removal rate in the interdental space restored with zirconia crowns, while interdental toothbrush was the most effective in removing the dental plaque at the marginal portion.

The survey was carried out questionnaire research targeting 400(service group 200, non-service group 200) and compared the two groups. The obtained results were as follow: 1. brushing behavior showed the highest ratio of 3~4 times/day(53.4%) in brushing frequency, up-down method(50.8%) in brushing method, after 5 minutes after the meals(45.0%) in brushing time, shape brush(56.6%) in brush change time. 2. service group used a lot more auxiliary oral hygiene devices than non-service group(50.9%). the frequency of use was toothpick(30.9%), gargle(29.9%), floss(13.5%), tongue cleaner(10.1%). 3. In comparison of two group about state of use, service group showed more higher ratio of floss(66.1%), tongue cleaner(64.4%), gargle(56.6%) than non-service group. non-service group showed more higher ratio of toothpick(54.6%) than service group 4. Service group used auxiliary oral hygiene devices by suggestions of dental clinic(53.6%) and didn't use them because of uncomfortable to use(45.4%) or didn't know how to use(21.6%). 5. As result of the awareness-related using rate of auxiliary oral hygiene devices, service group showed higher using ratio except toothpick than non-service group. especially gargle(54.8%), tongue cleaner(43.3%), floss(35.8%) were showed high. 6. service group took a regular checkups more than non-service group and showed the highest ratio of each 1 year(43.5%) in checkup period.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the correlation between diabetes and periodontal diseases in Korean adults based upon the data of the 2007 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The subjects of this study were 190 adults aged ${\geq}19years$ whose CPI(Community Periodontal Index) and diabetes related medial histories including its component-specific examination data had been available, and the results of this study are summarized as follows: 1. Diabetes related characteristics associated with the prevalence of periodontal diseases include diabetes education, diabetes treatment, and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c). The incidence rate of periodontitis was higher in the subjects who had not received diabetes education or treatment or who showed at least 7.0 of glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels (apt to be uncontrolled). 2. General health behaviors associated with the prevalence of periodontal diseases include smoking and drinking. The incidence rate of periodontitis was higher in those who were currently smokers or who had higher frequencies of drinking per week. 3. Oral health behaviors associated with the prevalence of periodontal diseases include the history of oral health examination in the previous year, the use of proxabrush or dental floss, and perceived oral health status. The incidence rate of periodontitis was higher in those who had not received oral health examinations in the previous year, who had used neither proxabrush nor dental floss or who perceived that their own oral health was poor.
The present study accentuate to investigate attitude and behavior about oral health education. The purpose is to provide awareness the importance of oral health education in dental clinics. A total of 350 surveys were over the age of 18 who visited oral health institutes in Chollabuk-Do, Korea. Survey was conducted with self-reported questionnaires from March 22 through April 10, 2004. The results were as follows: 1. The experience to receive oral health education, female, better educated and homemakers made a higher request. 2. Concerning practice they learned, the patients who were female, in there 30s, better educated and government works practiced was it the best. As for why didn't apply learned, they had not concerned about that (62.8%). 3. The greatest rate of respondents had been scaling in content of oral health Dental Patients education (35.3%) and 42.2% were informed flossing except tooth brushing in regarding auxiliary oral hygiene devices. 4. Respondents showed that tooth brushing was more frequently helpful (46.9%) and food control was 10.1% after oral health education. 5. To oral health care by oral health education, there was no significantly different in tooth brushing method and their teeth cleaned every two years (25.7%) and they used floss and the interproximal brush (30.6%).
