  • The purpose of this study was to present the empirical data for the prevention of suicide by analyzing the group differences according to the types of risk factors and protective factors of family members living with dementia patients and the effects of each type on suicidal ideation. This study investigated the characteristics of suicidal ideation among family members of people living with dementia by using a community health survey. It then investigated the effect of each latent group on the suicidal ideation of family members of people living with dementia. Twenty-four risk and protective factors on suicide ideation were analyzed by using Mplus. The four latent classes were high risk - low protective, high risk - high protective, low risk - high protective and low risk - low protective. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the high risk-low protective factor group had the highest suicidal ideation. Based on these results, practical implications and challenges were presented.

  • The study was conducted to identify and clarify the conceptual definitions and attributes of caregiving satisfaction in family caregivers of patients with dementia. The hybird model was used to perform the concept analysis of caregiving satisfaction. Results from both the theoretical review and a field study including 7 participants were included in final process. The concept of caregiving satisfaction was found to have three dimensions with seven attributes. Caregiving satisfaction by family caregivers of patients with dementia was defined as positive of aspects of caregiving usually experienced in three dimensions such as interpersonal dimensions (accomplishing a duty, reciprocity, strengthening of the relationship), role performance dimensions (feeling of accomplishment, emotional reward, emotional comfort) and meaning of role dimensions (positive meaning-making). Based on the results, a tool for measuring caregiving satisfaction among Koreans family caregivers of patients with dementia and effective programs for enhancing caregiving satisfaction should be developed in future studies.

  • Frontotemporal dementia, the second most common cause of early onset dementia, is a neurodegenerative clinical syndrome characterized by progressive deficits in behavior, executive function and language. Although motor symptoms in frontotemporal dementia are represented by motor neuron disease, parkinsonism and progressive supranuclear palsy syndrome, there have been no reports of motor weakness caused by the direct involvement of central motor nervous systems in frontotemporal dementia. Moreover, no association between clinical dementia groups and complex regional pain syndrome has been reported. We diagnosed a rare case with motor weakness and complex regional pain syndrome of lower limbs due to central nervous system lesion in a patient with frontotemporal dementia by magnetic resonance imaging, electrodiagnostic study and three phase bone scan. Following steroid therapy for complex regional pain syndrome, pain was improved. Functional improvement was noted after rehabilitation therapy, including functional electrical stimulation, muscle strengthening exercise and gait training during hospitalization. This case report suggests that rehabilitation therapy for motor weakness in frontotemporal dementia could be effective for improving overall function.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore family caregiver's need for online education for dementia caregiving. Participants in this study were 220 family caregivers from district dementia centers in Seoul. Family caregiver's usability and needs of online education program were assessed using self-administered questionnaires. Descriptive statistics and t-test comparisons were conducted. About 50% of family caregivers answered they could use and have intention to use online education. The results showed that there were the highest demand for the video lectures which give information about dementia and case video about caregiving skills. There were differences in needs of online program according to the gender and age. The use of online program offers users the opportunity to participate support program at their own time and pace. In order to maximize the effects of online support programs, it is important to establish the strategies of the customized programs considering the characteristics of the caregivers.

  • As South Korea has become an aged society, the dementia rate has also been increasing. With the introduction of both de-institutionalization and community care in 2017, the importance of community-based care has increased. Perspectives on dementia have also been shifting from the medical model and social model to the person-centered model. This paper suggests ways to improve dementia service through analyzing the dementia knowledge of care-givers at ADS. The paper includes an FGI with the care-givers who have worked for more than 2 years. Based on such FGI, the paper draws sub-themes from 7 areas. Among the suggestions for improvement are: community-based service with daily routine practice, improving awareness of dementia for co-living, and person-centered service based on individuality and diverseness.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide basic data for reducing aging anxiety and for effective prevention and management of dementia by identifying the effects of perception and attitude toward dementia on aging anxiety. The subjects of this study were 509 citizens living in J city, Chungbuk. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to examine the effects of dementia awareness and attitude on aging anxiety. The results of this study showed that the factors affecting the aging anxiety were significantly affected by the dementia awareness, which means that the lower the dementia awareness, the higher the aging anxiety. However, the attitude toward dementia did not have a significant effect on the anxiety about aging. Based on the results of this study, policy suggestions are as follows: First, systematic education and education programs for the promotion of dementia awareness are needed. Second, promotion for the improvement of dementia awareness is needed. Third, it is necessary to establish a community network to improve the awareness of dementia.

  • In this study, we suggest a tablet-PC based application as an instrument for self-examination of dementia and aim to evaluate its usability for the practical use. The tool for the self-diagnosis of dementia is testing a person's sentence comprehension, which is investigated by the accuracy of a sentence-picture matching task, and the result of the test can differentiate individuals with dementia of Alzheimer's type from normal aging population. According to its use for diagnosis of dementia, we developed a new version of sentence-picture matching task by a cooperative study with NABLE(Neurogenic communication And Brain Lab at Ewha) and applied to the application as a main function. Targeting the New Silver who are preliminary aged people in Korea, this application can provide them with three values: 'self-', 'easy', and 'simple'. When using this application, users can gain these values by an instruction manual with the recorded guide voice, easy-to-use functions and the simplified menu structure of it. After prototyping, we conducted the usability test and it was proved as a result that the New Silver users can easily operate the application by themselves.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristics and side effects relevance of physically restrained elderly patients with dementia in the nursing hospitals. The data were collected from nursing care providers working at the 5 nursing hospitals with survey and analyzed 190 data using SPSS 21.0 program. The finding showed that age of '75 to 84' years occupied 58.3%, '17-24' hours of the total restrained time of the day 22.6%, night time 57.4% and no fall down history 54.2%. Age showed relevance with local edema and problem of joint construction(p<.05), specifically '85 and over' years having 25% occurrence in the problem of joint construction. Walking ability showed relevance with pressure ulcer, but in the patients who could walk it showed more frequency than in the patients who could not walk. The total restrained time of the day showed relevance with skin redness, local edema, problem of joint construction(p<.05). Based on this finding, it would be necessary to apply differential care policies according to the characteristics of patients when we care the restrained patients with dementia.
