  • Purpose: There is a growing concern for the cost management of medical institutions. The purpose of this study was to estimate Activity-Based Costing (ABC) for dental implant cost. ABC refers to allocating resources or cost based on the activities of services. Materials and methods: A dental institution located in the metropolitan area was selected in this study. The tax accounting data of the institution were utilized to confirm total cost, and the institution was asked to make out clinical activities to figure out what activities were carried out. The direct cost and indirect cost for dental implant were separately estimated, and cost driver was analyzed to estimate the indirect cost accurately. Results: The rates of the direct and indirect cost respectively stood at 35.8 and 49.5 percent. The cost for a dental implant was found to be approximately 1,579 won, and the cost of prosthetic surgery and treatment that included implant surgery accounted for the largest portion of the cost, which was 470 thousand won (30%). And the weight of training and education on dentistry was relatively higher than that of the other kinds of treatment. Conclusion: In order to ensure accurate and scientific costing for dental implant, not only direct medical procedure but every pre- and post-procedure activity should fully be taken into account. Pre-activities, post-activities, education and training are included in the indirect cost, but all these activities are mandatory and associated with the quality of treatment and the satisfaction level of patients.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the influential relationship between the type of dental treatment and the dental fear of teens in a bid to seek ways of relieving adolescents of dental anxiety and fear. The subjects were teenaged students in South Gyeongsang Province. After a survey was conducted for eight days from December 2 to 9, 2009, the answer sheets from 420 students were analyzed. The findings of the study were as follows: When a correlation analysis was employed to look for connections between dental treatment experiences and dental fear, the components of dental treatment experiences had a significant correlation to those of dental fear. As a result of making a regression analysis, overall dental fear was under the significant influence of prosthodontic treatment experiences, and avoidance of dentistry was significantly affected by conservative treatment experiences. Oral and maxillofacial treatment experiences had a significant impact on physiologic response, and dental stimulus was significantly affected by prosthodontic treatment experiences. Therefore dental institutions should direct their efforts into the development of manuals geared toward different types of treatment and different patients in order for adolescents to receive dental treatment without any anxiety or fear, to get a regular dental checkup, to receive more preventive treatment, to promote their oral health and ultimately to lead a healthy life.

In dental clinics, working conditions (27.2%) and in dental hospitals, salary increase (37.1%) should be given top priority for improvement. The most common reasons for which dental hygienists changed theirs jobs were significantly different between dental clinics and dental hospitals: discord with supervisors (39.3%) in dental clinics and dissatisfaction with the salary (28.6%) in dental hospitals. • A tracheostomy tube serves as airway management for patients whose respiration is impeded due to inflammation, tumor, or traumatic events. If the patients who have tracheostomy tube, visit dental clinic for dental treatments, we should consider the underlying general condition of patients and then make treatment plans according to their state. A 22-Year old male patient, who had tracheostomy tube on his neck, came to our department for comprehensive dental treatment. Mild mental retardation was observed and he was taking anti-convulsant drugs for the prevention of epileptic seizure. Multiple advanced dental caries, hopeless teeth, and impacted third molars were also observed by clinical and radiographic examination. Due to the risk of epileptic seizure and low cooperativity to tolerate the treatment, general anesthesia was recommended by physician, and the anti-convulsant drug was administrated during procedure. In this case, we aimed to report the multidisciplinary approach for the dental treatment of patient having a tracheostomy tube.
