  • A plant diversity, which consists of indigenous plant community with Orientla thuja community (Natural monument no. 1) in Dodong, Daegu, is identified and analyzed as ecological characteristic to consider worth plants and vegetation resource of the region. The vascular plants of Thuja orientalis community were listed as 219 taxa (3.7% of all 4,881 taxa of Korean vascular plants); 67 families, 147 genera, 199 species, 16 varieties, and 4 forms. Vulnerable species (VU) and least concerned species (LC) were recorded based on IUCN standard; Koelretueria paniculata (VU), Thuja orientalis (LC), and Exochorda serratifolia (LC). Although the study site is a non-limestone area, a total of 15 taxa of calciphilous plants were identified; Cheilanthes argentea, Hypodematium glandulosopilosum, Asplenium retamuraria, Thuja orientalis, Spiraea blumei, Smilax sieboldii, etc. A total of 4 taxa endemic plants were identified; Prunus mandshurica for. barbinervis, Lespedeza maximowiczii var. tomentella, Forythia koreana (artificial origin), and Veronica pyrethrina. Among the list, 8 taxa of naturalized plants were identified; Fallopia dentatoalalta, Rumex crispus, Nasturtium officinale, Bidens frondosa, Erigeron annuus etc. Naturalization rate (NR) was 3.6%, of all 219 taxa of vascular plants and urbanization index (UI) was 2.2% of all 321 taxa of naturalized plants. Thuja orientalis occupies a lot of indigenous landscape in this study area which is the southern-limited part of a natural distribution where it can survive. The T. orientalis community, where indigenous plants have formed a characterful species composition based on habitat, has been confirmed as a worth national vegetation resource in an indigeous flora. It has been considered of plans for persistent conservation.

  • The contents of bioactive materials (e.g. polyphenolics compounds, flavonoids, minerals, and fatty acids) and antioxidative activities (DPPH (${\alpha}$,${\alpha}$'-diphenyl-${\beta}$-picrylhydrazyl) free radical scavenging activity, peroxidation of linoleic acid and rat hepatocyte microsome, and Fe/Cu reducing power) were tested by in vitro experimental models using water, ethanol and methanol extracts of leaves (TOL) and fruits (TOF) from Thuja orientalis. Methanol extract from TOL showed the highest extraction yield (12.90%) as well as contents of polyphenolic compounds (16.02%) and flavonoids (0.25%). Major minerals were Ca, K, and Mg. Major fatty acids were palmitic and lauric acids in TOL and palmitic and decanoic acids in TOF. In oxidation of in vitro models using DPPH free radical scavenging activity, Fe/Cu reducing power, $Fe^{2+}$/ascorbate-induced linolenic acid peroxidation by ferric thiocyanate and thiobarbituric acid (TBA) methods, and autooxidation of rat hepatic microsomes membrane, anti-oxidative activities were stronger in all extracts of TOL than in those of TOF in a dose-dependent manner. From these results, methanol extract of TOL was shown to have the most potent anti-oxidative properties and the highes content of antioxidative compounds such as polyphenolic compounds and flavonoids.

  • Effects on noise attenuation of the hedge species, Thuja orientalis L. and Euonymus japonicus Thunb., widely used as road side hedges, were analysed at the frequencies of 1,000, 2,000 and 3,150 Hz., respectively. The present experiments were carried out both in the field and in a Semianechoic Chamber. As increasing the distances from the noise source, attenuation rates of noise level were increased at high frequencies. But the attenuation rates of the noise level at low frequencies showed varied as the distances increased, and this trend appeared to be caused by the influence of ground waves. Generally, in this experiment, Thuja orientalis L., which is a coniferous species, showed more effective on the abilities of noise attenuation than that of Euonymus japonicus Thunb., which is a broad-leaved evergreen species.

  • To examine aluminum toxicity on woody plants, aluminum solution and ground water(pH 6.75) were treated on the seeded pot (48$\times$33$\times$9cm) of Pinus thunbergiana, Thuja orientalis and Ligustrum obtusifolium, filled with sand, three times per week, 5mm per time, from April 28, 1993 to June 16. Aluminum solution were prepared 1.0, 2.5 and 5.0mM aluminum potassium sulfate, dilulted with ground water. Growth-related characters(seedling number, seedling height, top, root and total dry weight) were measured and compared among species and treatments. The response of seedling growth-related characters to aluminum solution treatment differed among the species, and the most sensitive species is Ligustrum obtusifolium, and the most tolerant species is Pinus thunbergiana.

  • In Sasang Constitutional Medicine, pine trees have been used as medicines for Taeyangin and a pine-nuts tree for Taeumin. However, there has been some misunderstandings in interpretation as the Koreans referred to back(栢) as pine-nuts tree as well as cheukback(측백) tree. Also, we have disputed over how to translate songback(松栢). Regarding this dispute, 1 came to the following conclusion based on a research with exactitude. 1. Songja (松子), Songjain(松子仁), Songsil(松實) means Pinus Koraiensis(잣), not a pine .one. 2. Backja(栢子) is a fruit of Cheukback(측백) tree, not of a pinus koraiensis(잣). 3. Some part of 'yulsunjun(列仙傳)' quoted to explain pine-nuts in Bonchogangmok(本草綱目) was misrepresented. 4. In regard to the record that a court lady of Chin(秦) Dynasty lived for bundle of years, Galhong(葛洪) made a mistake by saying that she took pine needles and a Pinus Koraiensis in 'Pobakja(抱朴子)', while saying that she took pine needles and leaves of Cheukback(측백) tree in 'Joohoobigeupbang( 後備急方). Also He made a mistake by saying that took pine needles and leaves of cheukback(측백) tree in Bonchogangmok(本草綱目). 5. Songback(松栢), which was referred to in the Analects of Confucius(論語) and the historical annals(史記), should be understood as an old pine tree with a hard quality of the lumber and evergreen, .rather than 'a pine tree and a pine-nuts tree' or 'a pine tree and Cheukback(측백) tree'. 6. Although 'Songback(松栢) mentioned in a book on medicine were sometimes considered as 'a pine-nuts tree' and 'Cheukback(측백) tree' or 'a pine tree and .Cheukback(측백) tree,' it should be regarded as an old pine tree in most cases.

  • Antifungal activities of domestic plants were examined to develope natural antimicrobial agents, able to protect citrus fruits from spoiling microorganism during their storage. A fungus was isolated from citrus fruits' storage and identified to Penicillium sp. CF-301, based on the morphological characteristics of conidiophore and conidia; flask shape of phialide, simple branching type of conidiophore, and columnar shape of conidial head, in malt extract agar and potato dextrose agar media. Chloroform extracts of Juniperus chinesis Linnaeus, J. chinesis var. horizontalis showed remarkable antifungal activities against Penicillium sp. CF-301.
