  • For the development of combustion technology of RDF(refuse derived fuel), combustion characteristics are examined in bubbling fluidized bed, circulating fluidized bed, continuos combustor and batch type combustor. The characteristics of combustion and exhaust gas has been compared and analyzed in many type of combustion facilities, which has been utilized as basic data for the advanced research of specified RDF combustion facility. Stable combustion has been observed in bubbling and circulating fluidized bed from controled operating condition like the proper feeding rate and superficial gas velocity. In circulating fluidized bed, concentration of NOx has been increased with the operating condition by the fuel-NO and oxygen reaction and $SO_2$ can be considered not to be produced in RDF fluidized bed from very low concentration in flue gas. HCl concentration is 36.4 ppm as average value and lower than standard emission value, but the counter plan is needed. Shaped RDF and fluff RDF have been compared in continuos combustor and batch type combustor and shaped RDF shows benefit for the stable heat recovery and gas emission shows similar value and characteristics.

  • The flows around a high speed train are very important because they could affect the aerodynamic characteristics such as drag and acoustic noise. Especially the boundary layer of flows could represent the characteristic of flows around the high speed train. Most previous studies have focused on the boundary layer region along the train length direction for the side of the train and underbody. The measurement and analysis of the boundary layer for the roof side is also very important because it could determine the flow inlet condition for the pantograph. In this study, the roof boundary layer was measured with a 1/20 scaled model of the next generation high speed train, and the results were compared with full-scaled computational fluid dynamics results to confirm their validity. As a result, it was confirmed that the flow inlet condition for the pantograph is about 85% of the train speed. Additionally, the characteristics of the boundary layer, which increases along the train direction, was also analyzed.

  • Three-phase inverse fluidized bed has been widely adopted with its increasing demand in the fields of bioreactor, fermentation process, wastewater treatment process, absorption and adsorption processes, where the fluidized or suspended particles are small or lower density comparing with that of continuous liquid phase, since the particles are frequently substrate, contacting medium or catalyst carrier. However, there has been little attention on the three-phase inverse fluidized beds even on the hydrodynamics. Needless to say, the information on the hydrodynamics and transport phenomena such as heat and mass transfer in the inverse fluidized beds has been essential for the operation, design and scale-up of various reactors and processes which are employing the three-phase inverse beds. In the present article, thus, the information on the three-phase inverse fluidized beds has been summarized and reorganized to suggest a pre-requisite knowledge for the field work in a sense of engineering point of view. The article is composed of three parts; hydrodynamics, heat and mass transfer characteristics of three-phase inverse fluidized beds. Effects of operating variables on the phase holdup, bubble properties and particle fluctuating frequency and dispersion were discussed in the section of hydrodynamics; effects of operating variables on the heat transfer coefficient and on the heat transfer model were discussed in the section of heat transfer characteristics ; and in the section of mass transfer characteristics, effects of operating variables on the liquid axial dispersion and volumetric liquid phase mass transfer coefficient were examined. In each section, correlations to predict the hydrodynamic characteristics such as minimum fluidization velocity, phase holdup, bubble properties and particle fluctuating frequency and dispersion and heat and mass transfer coefficients were suggested. And finally suggestions have been made for the future study for the application of three-phase inverse fluidized bed in several available fields to meet the increasing demands of this system.

  • Rut-resistance pavement is adopted to prevent pavement from plastic deformation since 1998. The objective of this paper is to investigate performance and economic efficiency between rut-resistance pavement and conventional hot-mix asphalt(HMA) on national highway. The pavement deterioration models incorporated in HDM-4 have been calibrated and adapted to local road conditions based on observed pavement rut-depth data. Based on calibration result of HDM-4, the economic evaluation including road agency cost and user cost is performed for 34 road pavement sections. Furthermore, we presented optimal timing for maintenance and performance levels subject to different budget. We found that rut-resistance pavement is performing better than conventional hot-mix asphalt in most road sections. Furthermore, we confirmed that the application of HDM-4 is useful for pavement project planning and evaluation. More investigation is needed to enlarge the scope of the pavement data and to explore more deeply socio-environmental cost and delay cost.

  • Being the most widely used in ultrasound Doppler color flow mapping, the Kasai algorithm, also known as lag-1 autocorrelation method, is capable of estimating the Doppler mean frequency relatively accurately with a modest amount of computation. Particularly in the case of imaging deep lying areas, however, its performance suffers due to low signal-to-noise ratios. The purpose of this paper is to propose a dealiased lag-2 autocorrelation method which is superior to the Kasai algorithm even at low signal-to-noise ratios and to compare their performances through simulations. The proposed algorithm is found to be better by about 2 to 3 dB than the Kasai algorithm in terms of Doppler mean frequency estimation error in the presence of measurement noise.

  • Applicabilities of two 3-D hydrodynamic models on Chungkye Bay in which tidal flats are well developed were examined. Both EFDC model and ESCORT model with the ${\sigma}$-coordinate showed fairly good results. However, their efficiencies were lowered especially on the tidal flats due to dense vertical grids. This inefficiency could be overcome by using the z-coordinate of the ESCORT model keeping similar accuracy.

  • We studied the performance of a two-user time reversal multiple input single output scheme combined with the shifted transmission technique in a variable rate back-off scenario, called shifted time reversal (TR), that minimizes both intersymbol interference and multiuser interference. We compare the bit error rate performance of the shifted TR scheme to both full-rate TR and full back-off TR schemes and demonstrate its superiority to shifted zero forcing scheme when the guard interval is larger than one.

  • This paper is concerned with instability of flow fields which are dominated by the entropy mode with the presence of usual acoustic and vortical modes. These combined modes lead to nonlinear unstable waves which may occur in automobile, aircraft, or rocket engines. In this study instability in a side-burning rocket is investigated. It is shown that the energy growth rate parameters increase with an increase of the energy growth factor. The energy growth rate parameters for turbulent flows are larger than those for laminar flows. It is further shown that unstable wave motions for the high-temperature side-burning rocket are dictated mostly by the entropy mode, somewhat by the vortical mode, and least by the acoustic mode.
