  • The bacterial density of partially processed horticultural crops in the commercial market was relatively high probably due to improper handing or processing. Between crops, the bacterial density was low in peeled garlic and ranged above $10^8cfu{\cdot}g^{-1}fw$ in other crops. Especially in brake fern, the bacterial density was the highest and non food materials such as packing strips were found. There was difference in the effects of ozone-treated water washing treatment between crops. In root crops such as burdock and lotus root, ozone showed positive effect on preventing discoloration as well as lowing bacterial density resulting in the increase of marketing period. Any positive effect was not found when sliced crops were treated over 5 min at $0.3mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ of dissolved ozone. In lettuce slices, leaf tissues were severely discolored and rapidly soften at $0.3mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ for 2 min dipping. Ozone was highly effective on inhibiting bacterium propagation and off-flavor. This effect was more stronger in Fischer ligulariata than brake fern, probably due to the difference of tissue thickness. Results indicated that ozone-treated water washing had a strong potential to improve the market quality of partially processed horticultural crops including dried wild greens and sliced root crops.

  • BACKGROUND: This survey was done to investigate the pesticide residues and to assess their risk on agricultural products on the Markets in Incheon from 2010 to 2012. METHODS AND RESULTS: The total number of samples were 16,025 for agricultural products and these were analyzed by multi-residue method using GC-ECD/NPD, GC-MS, LC-MS/MS and HPLC-PDA/FLD. The violation rates of the samples over maximum residue limits(MRLs) of pesticide residues established by Korean Food and Drug Administration in the survey of 2010, 2011 and 2012 were 1.2%, 0.8% and 0.7%, respectively. CONCLUSION(S): Of the total violated samples, more than 75% of the rates were recorded from the samples of leafy vegetables. Most commonly encountered agricultural commodities over MRLs were Chwinamul, perilla leaves and crown daisy. The pesticides detected yearly over MRLs during three years were endosulfan, chlorpyrifos, diazinon, lufenuron, chlorothalonil, flutolanil, procymidone, ethoprophos. Estimated daily intakes compared to acceptable daily intakes, except radish and Welsh onion, is estimated less harm on human in 10 kinds of pesticides which frequently occurred violation.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine changes in the residues of procymidone and diazinon in Chwinamul, pepper leaves, and young radish according to drying method. When the three vegetables were dried at room with air stream, the residues of procymidone and diazinon increased, but after being adjusted to reflect the decrease in water content of the vegetables, the residues declined by 10 to 83 percent. When they were dried in a oven, the residues of the pesticides in the vegetables also increased, but after being adjusted to reflect the drop in the water content, the residues decreased by 44 to 71 percent. According to the results, the residues of the pesticides mostly decreased after being adjusted to reflect the drop in the water content of the dried vegetables. Therefore, when judging dried agricultural products not only the decreased water content of dried vegetables but also other factors that affect pesticide residues during the drying process should be considered. This raises the need for additional research on such factors.

  • This study was conducted to obtain basic information needed to develop the effective weed control method by using thermal weeder which uses LPG as fuel. For survey of weed distribution in herb field, weed species were investigated at two kinds of herb field of Codonopsis lanveolata and Aster scaber located in Hoengseongkun and Hwacheonkun, Kangwondo. In Codonopsis lanveolata field, Digitaria sanguinalis and Persicaria viridis L were dominated. In Aster scaber field, Digitaria sanguinalis and Erigeron canadensis were dominated. In general, Grasses weeds in herb were more dominated than other broadleaf and Cyperaceae weeds. The treatments of $H_2SO_4$ in weed seeds were more effective for germination of several weeds, compared with that nontreated weed seeds. However, the rate of germination differed depending on weed species and tereatment time of $H_2SO_4. Also, viability of weed seeds was significantly affected by irradiation time and temperature. As the temterature and treatment time of irradiation increased, the rate of germination was decreased.

  • The survey guideline of forest products statistics suggests a certain type of standard to aggregate production amount of each item such as dry bracken, raw dates, cracked nuts, It does not, however, give any information about transition ratios, which would apply to convert weights of fresh bracken into dry one, or cracked nuts into the non-cracked. This has been one of the main factors which would make the statistics unreliable. The purpose of this study is to examine the aggregation realities and to put forward some proposals to improve forest products statistics with transition ratios. Targets of this study are 10 forest products that are strongly related to the mentioned problems. With the calculated transition ratios and some assumptions the changing rate of the official statistics of 2004 production amounts ranged from -41% to 474% for the 10 subjects. The suggested figures for transitions are based only on one-year analysis results. Therefore more periods are required to improve the accuracy and the reliability, and this study would be a good starting point.

  • For this study, plant material for development of phytobiotics (feed additives made with plant extract) was screened. Among hot-water extracts of 9 medicinal plants, Fallopia japonin showed the highest antioxidative activity; the electron donating ability (EDA) and nitrite scavenging ability were 86.9% and 92.7%, respectively. Also, F. japonica had the antimicrobial activity for Pseudomonas aeruginora, Escherichia coli, Bacillus cereus, Salmonella Typhimurium, Listeria monocytogenes, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphyzococcus aureus. Specially, antimicrobial activity of F. japonica against K. pneumoniae, and S. aureus was vet strong. $IC_{50}$ of F. japonica against K. pneumoniae, and S. aureus was 6.24 mg/mL and 1.8 mg/mL respectively. These results suggested that F. japonica was a candidate for a phytobiotic material.

  • This study was carried out to monitor the current status of pesticide residues in selling agricultural products via online and assessed their safety in 2014. A total of 124 samples were purchased six times from March to August 2014 twenty online shopping malls randomly. These samples were analysed 208 pesticides by multiresidue method using a GC-ECD/NPD and a LC-MS/MS and confirmed by a GC-MSD. As a result of analysis, residual pesticides samples were 11 (8.9%) such as leek, young radish, welsh onion etc, of which 2 samples (1.6%) such as sesame bud (Chlorothalonil), artemisia (Chlorpyrifos) were violated Korea Maximum Residue limits (MRLs). 11 kinds of pesticides (19 times) were detected in 11 samples. Risk assessment evaluated human health exposure with the ratio of EDI (Estimated daily intake) to ADI (Acceptable daily intake) of pesticides detected. %ADI (the ratios of EDI to ADI) were 0.04~95.70% and some samples represented a fairly dangerous levels. In particular, Chlorothalonil in the sesame bud was shown as a significant risk close to 100% of %ADI. Accordingly, it is recommended to strengthen a safety check on agricultural products in online sales.

  • Selected leafy vegetables, widely used for Korean Namul dishes, were heat-treated in different ways and their folate retention was investigated. The Lactobacillus casei method was applied for folate estimation and validated to ensure reliability of analytical data. The folate content in Namul highly varied, from 29.7 to $293.4{\mu}g/100g$, depending on the heating methods and the types of vegetables. Most of the Namul variants showed increased folate content on heat treatment. Frying yielded higher folate retention than the other cooking methods (blanching, steaming, baking, and panfrying), and pig weed showed the highest folate retention (3.3 times, $293.4{\mu}g/100g$). L. casei assay for folate estimation showed 95.7% recovery and relative standard deviations less than 2% for both reproducibility and repeatability, indicating good accuracy and precision. Quality of the folate assay was assured by monitoring a quality control chart and a proficiency test (z-score= -0.1) during the entire of study.
