A study was carried out to investigate the genesis and mineralogical characteristics of clay minerals in three different types of soil derived from the gray shale distributed in Kyeongbuk Province in Korea. The soils have been developed from parent materials of residuum (Daegu series, Sirye series), colluvium(Banho series), and alluvium (Bigog series) of the same origin of parent rock with a topographical sequence. The investigation mainly focussed on the mineralogical aspects of primary minerals of asnd and silt fractions, identification and quantification of clay minerals, and characterization of hydroxy-interlayered mineral (HIM) along with their chemical composition. The identification was done through analyses of chemical, X-ray diffraction, and thermal methods. The major clay minerals in the soils are illite, vermiculite, kaolin and HIM, while chlorite and mixed layer minerals such as illite/chlorite and illite/vermiculite were coexisted as a subsidiary minerals. The distribution of clay minerals, however, varies according to the location and types of parent material. In the soils derived from the parent material of residuum, the upper soil (Daegu series) shows higher of 2:1 type minerals such as illite, vermiculite, and HIM than 1:1 type mineral rich in the lower soil(Sirye series). Soils developed from the parent material of colluvium and alluvium were high in illlte and mixed layer minerals, but low in HIM compared with the residual soils. The predominant weathering sequence of the clay minerals in each soil could be inferred as follows according to the minerlogical distribution and quantification of clay minerals : Daegu series, illite ${\rightarrow}$ vermiculite ${\rightarrow}$ HIM ; Sirye series, vermiculite ${\rightarrow}$ kaolin minerals ; Banho sereies and Bigog series, illite ${\rightarrow}$ illlte/vermiculite and/or illite/chlorlte mixed layer ${\rightarrow}$ vermiculite.

Aggregate is an essential construction material, and the demand is increasing every year. Aggregate has different properties in each region, and it is difficult to supply it over long distances due to its quantity and weight. For the stabilization of aggregate supply and demand, regional aggregate resource surveys have been conducted since 1993 in Korea. In this study, an aggregate resource survey was conducted in Goyang City to understand the characteristics of aggregate distribution as part of the annual regional aggregate resource survey in 2020. Goyang City has a high mountainous area to the east, and the southwestern part shows a topography where a wide flatland develops. It has 18 small streams originated from the eastern mountainuos area and 1 large stream Han River. The drilling data shows that thickness of the Quaternary deposits tend to deepen toward the south. The aggregate reserves are relatively abundant, the depth of the aggregates are relatively deep. Changes in the depth of the Quaternary deposits and the amount of aggregate in Goyang are seems to be closely related to the activities of the Han River rather than the sedimentation characteristics from the upstream to the downstream of the small streams. This characteristics show a similar tendency to the distribution of aggregates in adjacent regions to the west coast in Korea. Therefore, the regions that close to west coast have a high probability of aggregate reserves around relatively large-scale streams flowing into the west coast.
This study focuses on the categorization of the phenomenon of vegetative recruitment on riparian channels, so called, the phenomenon from "white river" to "green river", and proposes for the corresponding research direction. According to the literature review and research outputs obtained from the authors' previous research performed in Korea within a limited scope, the necessary and sufficient conditions for the recruitment and retrogression of riparian vegetation may be the mechanical disturbance (riverbed tractive stress), soil moisture (groundwater level, topography, composition of riverbed material, precipitation etc.), period of submergence, extreme weather, and nutrient inflow. In this study, two categories, one for the reduction in spring flood due to the change in spring precipitation pattern in unregulated rivers and the other for the increase in nutrient inflow into streams, both of which were partially proved, have been added in the categorization of the vegetative recruitment and retrogression on the riparian channels. In order to scientifically investigate further the phenomenon of the riparian vegetative recruitment and retrogression and develop the working riparian vegetative models, it is necessary to conduct a systematic nationwide survey on the "white to green" rivers, establishment of the categorization of the vegetation recruitment and retrogression based on the proof of those hypotheses and detailed categorization, development of the working mathematical models for the dynamic riparian vegetative recruitment and retrogression, and adaptive management for the river changes.
The landform of the study area is defined as a small-scale alluvial plain in the valley bottom adjacent to the coast. By the aggradation of alluvial materials, this valley bottom plain was formed in dissected parts of low hills. For the purpose of reconstructing the palaeo climate environment in this study, $\delta^{13}C$ analysis and soil organic carbon analysis are therefore employed. Main results of this study are as follows: Section I: the period of $6,600{\pm}60yr$ B.P.$-5,350{\pm}60yr$B.P. was mostly in warm and humid climate environment. A little changes of the humid environment are detected as subdry (or sub-humid)${\rightarrow}$humid in terms of the dryness and wetness. Section II: the period of $5,350{\pm}60yr$ B.P.-2,200 yr B.P. was in warm and humid climate environment, which is similar to the present. However, The sediments between $4,720{\pm}60yr$ B.P. and $4,210{\pm}50 yr$ B.P. experienced the most humid climate environment of all studied sedimentary layers. After $4,210{\pm}50 yr$ B.P., the environment started to change from the humid to the sub-humid (or sub-dry) climate. Section III: the period of 2,200 yr B.P.$-210{\pm}60 yr$ B.P. was distinguish from previous two sections as the environmental changes to sub-humid (or sub-dry) climate was apparent.
The composition of primary minerals of sand fractions and secondary minerals of clay fractions were investigated on the polder soils developed from alluvio-marine deposits near to Sapgyo-lake, constructed a sea dike across river estuary located in the west coast. The effects of a topographical sequence on the physico-chemical properties and mineralogical characteristics were evaluated using XRD, DTA, and TG with the chemical composition of $H^+$ saturated clays. Soils located on the seashore side were more silt fraction, higher pH and exchangeable cations than the others. The dominant minerals of soil parent materials are in the order of quartz, feldspars, micas, chlorite and amphibole. According to the greater distance from the lake, the amount of 1:1 minerals increased, but 2:1 minerals decreased. The dominant clay minerals of polder soils are kaolinite, vermiculite and illite. Hydroxy interlayer minerals are abundant in the clay fractions derived from the soil parent materials which have relatively low soil pH.

In various places of drainage basins of major rivers in South Korea are distributed intermontane basins. Basin floor covered with fluvial deposits carried from the surrounding mountane area becomes alluvial plain. Its productivity is comparatively higher than anywhere else. Thus basin is a local administrative, economic, and cultural core area. Intermontane basin consists of backward mountane area, gentle hills, and alluvial lowland. The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the morpogenetic processes and development age of Angae Basin located in the sedimentary rock region. Hills with the height of a.s.l. $80{\sim}100m$ distributed in Angae Basin are residual landforms, which are the remnants of dissection of the etchplain that results from the denudation of bedrock deeply weathered along tectolineaments under the warm and moist climate, and reflect lithological differentiation of bedrock. Those hills have been comparatively higher ridges since the initial stage of the original etchplain, and they have been immune from fluvial processes. The etchplain appeared as $80{\sim}100m$ hills. the high terrace distributed in upstream reach of Nakdong River drainage basin and the old meander-cut at Seoburi in Wicheon drainage basin, are formed at the same stage when riverbed of Wicheon Stream functioned as a local base level according as the fluvial system of Wichoen arrived at dynamic equilibrium.

Authors performed pollen analysis in deposits at a coastal plain at Yeongjong-do Island located in Incheon, South Korea. Sampling site (7.2 m a.s.l.) belongs to the cool temperate deciduous broad-leaf forest. Environmental changes since 8,900 yrs B.P. reconstructed from pollen analysis are as follows; JS-I stage (c.a. 8,900~8,500 yrs B.P. ) was cool temperate northern mixed-forest which is comparable to the early PostGlacial pollen stage RI in Japan, in which Pinus and Quercus were dominant and Abies and Picea were also found. At that time, climate was relatively cooler and dryer than today. JS-II stage (sometime between 8,500~4,000 yrs B.P.) was Pinus-dominant coniferous forest, which is comparable to the mid-Post-Glacial pollen stage RII. Mixed forest of Pinus, Quercus and Carpinus was dominant in JS-III stage (c.a. 4,000 yrs B.P). We assumed that JS-II and JS-III stage were relatively warmer and more humid than JS-I stage, and were more like present conditions. JS-IV stage (sometime between 4,000~900 yrs B.P.) was Pinus-dominant coniferous forest which is comparable to the late Post-Glacial pollen stage RIII. JS-V stage (c.a. 900 yrs B.P. ~present) was second growth Pinus-dominant coniferous forest stage. During the last stage, non-arboreal pollen was more common than arboreal pollen and Fagopyrum appeared among the herbaceous plant, which indicates that it is comparable to the RIIIb stage which was the age of human interference. From the JS-V stage, humans in the study site started agricultural activities.

In this study, pollen analysis and a dating were performed on the alluvial deposits in the Tangjeong Plains in Asan-Si, Chungcheongnam-Do. Specimens were collected at the altitude of about 12m, which belongs to the mid-forest belt in the cool temperate zone. The followings show the results. In general, the target zone passed through TJ-I (the coniferous forest age in which the Pinus forest was dominant), TJ-II (the mixed conifer and deciduous broad-leaved forest age in which Pinus and Quercus were dominant) and TJ-III (the coniferous forest age in which the Pinus was dominant) respectively. TJ-II was subdivided into TJ-IIa and TJ-IIb. TJ-I is presumed to be between about 2,810 and 1,500yrB.P.; TJ-IIa to be between about 1,500 and 1,370yrB.P.; and TJ-IIb to be between about 1,370 and 770yrB.P. As for TJ-III, it is presumed to begin after about 770yrB.P. In comparison with the nationwide pollen zone during the Postglacial, TJ-I and TJ-II are contrasted with the R-IIIa period and also TJ-III is contrasted with RIIIb (so-called human interference age). It is also presumed that Pinus luxuriated there after about 770yrB.P. as forests began to be markedly destroyed in the Tangjeong Plains.

Sea level fluctuations during the Holocene reconstructed by the results of age dating, microfossils researches and sedimentary facies from coastal alluvial plains contain the valuable informations on climatic changes. The sea level during 'maximum phase of transgression' during 6,000~5,000 yr BP was slightly higher than the present by approximately 0.8~1.0 m and the summer temperature conditions seemed to be higher than those of the present by 2~3℃ in the Central Europe when the period of 'Climatic Optimum' might be dominant. The sea level in Korean Peninsula was assumed by 0.8~1.0 m higher at that time compared to the present and climate seemed to be warmer. At 2,000~1,800 yr BP in Korean Peninsula, the sea level reached the higher stand than the present by approximately 1.1~1.3 m and the climatic conditions might be warm similar to the period of 'Climatic Optimum'. Although the temperature in the Central Europe during the period of 'Subboreal' was about 2~3℃ cooler, it is supposed that the sea level in Korean Peninsula was relatively higher than the present. The sea level at 2,300 yr BP might be similar to that of the present, which was the lowest level since the mid-Holocene. From the fact, climatic environment during the cold period might not be reflected exactly in the sea level.
In Korea, many open-air upper palaeolithic sites are located at the river valley, particularly exposed in gently rotting terrain along the river course. They are situated at an altitude less trail 30 m above present river bottom, and covered with the blankets of slope deposits of several meters in thickness. The purpose of this research is to eluridate depositional and vegetational environment of the alluvial upper palaeolithic Jangheung-ri sites on the basis of analytical properties of grain size population, chronology, palynology, soil chemistry and clay mineralogy and magnetic susceptibility of the Jangheung-ri Quaternary formations. The lithostratograpy of Jangheung-ri sit is subdivided into 3 layers based on the depositional sequence and radiocarbon ages. From bottom to top, they are composed of slope deposits with lower paleosol layers, young fluvial sand and gravel with backswamp organic muds, and upper paleosol layers. The upper paleosol was formed under rather dry climatic condition between each flooding period. Dessication cracks were prevalent in the soil solum which was filled with secondarily minuted fragments due to pedogenetic process. The soil structure shows typical braided-typed cracks in the root part of cracking texture, and more diversified pattern of crackings downward. The young fluvial sand gravel were formed by rather perennial streams after LGM. The main part of organic muds was particularly formed after 15Ka. Local backswamp were flourished with organic muds and graded suspension materials in the flooding muds were intermittently accumulated in the organic muds until ca. 11Ka. This episode was associated with migration of Nam River toward present course. Organic muds were formed in backswamp or local pond. Abies/Picea-Betula with Ranunculaceae, Compositae, Cyperaceae were prevalent. This period is characterized with B$\Phi$lling, Older Dryas, Allerod, and Younger Dryas (MIS-1). Stone artefacts were found in the lower paleosol layers formed as old as 18Ka-22Ka. Based on the artefacts and landscape settings of the Jangheung-ri site, it is presumed that settlement grounds of old people were buried by frequent floodings of old Nam River, the river-beds of which were heavily fluctuated laterally and river-bed erosions were activated from south to north in Jangheung-ri site until the terminal of LGM9ca 17Ka).
