  • Stresses occur in the spent nuclear fuel disposal canister due to the impulsive forces incurred in the accidental drop and impact event from the transportation vehicle onto the ground during deposition in the repository. In this paper, the comparative study of finite element analysis for stresses occurring in various models of the spent nuclear fuel disposal canister due to these impulsive forces is presented as one of design processes for the structural integrity of the canister. The main content of the study is about the design of the structurally safe canister through this comparative study. The impulsive forces applied to the canister subjected to the accidental drop and impact event from the transportation vehicle onto the ground in the repository are obtained using the commercial rigid body dynamic analysis computer code, RecurDyn. Stresses and deformations occurring due to these impulsive forces are obtained using the commercial finite element analysis computer code, NISA. The study for the structurally safe canister is carried out thru comparing and reviewing these values. The study results show that stresses become larger as the wall encompassing the spent nuclear fuel bundles inside the canister becomes thicker or as the diameter of the canister becomes larger. However, the impulsive force applied to the canister also becomes larger as the canister diameter becomes larger. Nonetheless, the deformation value per unit impulsive force decreases as the canister diameter increases. Therefore, conclusively the canister is structurally safe as the diameter increases.

  • When a body enters waters, its original kinetic energy or momentum is distributed among the body and surrounding water in the form of added mass. Due to the transfer of the energy or momentum, the bode is subjected to the hydrodynamic impact forces and acceleration. This impact behavior can be an important criterion of submersible vehicle launched to the air. In this paper, based on Life-boat model, an approximate method is proposed for the evaluation of the forces and responses of cylindrical rigid bode by water entry impact. The impact forces are calculated by yon Karman's momentum theory and motion responses the body, especially acceleration, are calculated by a numerical integration of the motion equations derived by hydrodynamic force equilibrium. The proposed method is expected to be a simple but efficient tool lot the preliminary design or motion analysis of a body subjected to water entry impact.

  • Debris flows occur in mountainous areas due to heavy rains resulting from climate change and result in disasters in the downstream area. The purpose of this study is to estimate the impact force of a debris flow when a check dam according is installed in various locations in the channel of a highly mountainous area. A Finite Differential Element Method (FDM) model was used to simulate the erosion and deposition based on the equation for the mass conservation and momentum conservation while considering the continuity of the fluid. The peak impact force from the debris flow occurred at 0 to 5 sec and 15 to 20 sec. When the supplied water discharge was increased, greater peak impact force was generated at 16 to 19 sec. This means that when increasing the water supply, the velocity of the debris flow became faster, which results in increased energy of the consolidation between the particles of the water and the sediment made. If a number of check dams were to be set up, it would be necessary to investigate the impact force at each location of the check dam. The results of this study could provide useful information in predicting the impact force of the debris flow and in installing the check dams in appropriate locations.

  • In this study the optimal isolation system for the prototype HIFD(high impulsive force device) is investigated. For this purpose, firstly, the dynamic behavior of a human body and a transmitted force under specific operation conditions are analyzed through a series of experimental works using the devised test setup. In order to design the optimal dynamic absorbing system, the parameter optimization process is performed using the simplified isolation system model based on the experimental results of linear impulse and transmitted force. Finally, under the parameters satisfying the constraints of the buffering displacement and the transmitted force, the performance of the designed isolation system for the prototype HIFD is evaluated by experiment.

  • The response characteristics of the forced vibration generated when the high-damped vehicle pass the bumped barrier was studied, and in particular, the response behavior of displacement, velocity and acceleration was analyzed for the forced vibration model. In addition, in order to obtain responses such as displacement, velocity, and acceleration, a numerical analysis technique of the Runge-Kutta-Gill method was performed in time domain. The response was successfully obtained in detail under several high damping conditions. As a numerical analysis result, the response of the vehicle was obtained by considering the vehicle body to which the impulse impact was applied. Also, the analysis result was compared with the experimental result in order to verify the validity of vehicle model. The amplitude and natural frequency of the vehicle were considered and analyzed. The Nyquist diagram of the vehicle model was also obtained and the relationship could be analyzed. And the vibration response was analyzed on different mass, damping and stiffness.

  • Recoil system for 40mm automatic gun is a device developed to absorb the shock of explosion. It is impossible to conduct pinpoint strike due to recoil if very high explosive shock, which is generated when an automatic gun fires shells, can't be absorbed. This study covers development and verification of analysis model for recoil system by utilizing a multi-domain software. The research process is as in the following. First, an analysis model is developed to verify damping characteristics through understanding of design intention. Second, environment which is identical to a field test is set up on analysis tool after putting explosive force that is measured through the test into the analysis model. Finally, the analysis model for recoil system using the multi-domain software is verified if it has effectiveness with a comparison between internal pressure of the recoil system along with displacement of gun barrel and the field test result.

  • The piezoelectric thin film sensor has good characteristics to observe the impact responses of composite structures. The capabilities for monitoring impact behavior of Gr/Ep laminates subjected to damage-induced impact using the PVDF(polyvinylidene fluoride) film sensor were examined. For a series of low-velocity impact tests from low energy to damage-induced energy, simulated sensor signals were compared with measured signals and the PVDF film sensor. Local impact damages(matrix cracking and delamination) were found at three impact tests, but the measured signals agreed well with the simulated sensor signals based on the linear relationship between the impact forces and the PVDF film sensor signals. And the inverse technique was applied to reconstruct the impact forces using the PVDF film sensor signals. Most of reconstructed impact forces had good agreement with the measured forces. The comparison results showed that the local damage due. to low-velocity impact didn't disturb the global impact responses of composite laminates and the reconstruction of impact forces from PVDF sensor signals wasn't affected by the local damage.

  • Piston slap is not only one of the major sources of noise and vibration in internal combustion engines but also a cause of the deterioration of engine performance. The basic mechanism associated with the piston slap seems to be quite simple but the phenomenon is in fact complicated with regard to many mechanical elements associated, First of all the impact force of piston slap must be identified to estimate engine block surface vibration, In this paper model of collision point is proposed to calculate the impact force when slap surface vibration. In this paper model of collision point is proposed to calculate the impact force when slap occurs. The parameters of the model are estimated by employing the concept of point mobility, . The predicted and experimentally observed vibration results confirm that the proposed method is practically useful.

  • One promising method for impact detection of composite structures is based on the use of piezopolymer thin fim (PVDf) sensor. In this paper, the relationship between the contact force and the signals of the attached strain gage and PVDF sensor to the composite plate subjected to low-velocity impact were derived. The relation for the open circuit and short circuit voltage of PVDF sensor was derived based on the equivalent circuit model of the piezoelectric sensor. The work was then extended to include experimental investigation into the use of short circuit voltage of PVDF sensor without using charge amplifier to detect low-velocity impact. The natural frequencies and damping ratio of the composite plate obtained from the vibration test were used to modify the analytical model and therefore the differences between measured and simulated signal of the modified analytical model in both forward and backward problem were considerably reduced. The reconstructed contact force and simulated sensor signals agreed well with the measured contact force, strain gage signal, and PVDF sensor singanl.
