The typical truss-lattice material successively packed by repeated cubic symmetric unit cells consists of sub-elements (SE) proposed in this study. The representative continuum model for this truss-lattice material such as the effective strain and stress relationship can be formulated by the homogenization procedure based on the notation of averaged mechanical properties. The volume fractions of micro-scale struts have a significant influence on the effective strength as well as the relative density in the lattice plate with replicable unit cell structures. Most of the strength contribution in the lattice material is induced by axial stiffness under uniform stretching or compression responses. Therefore, continuum based constitutive models composed of homogenized member stiffness include these mechanical characteristics with respect to strength, internal stress state, material density based on the volume fraction and even failure modes. It can be also recognized that the stress state of micro-scale struts is directly associated with the continuum constitutive model. The plastic flow at the micro-scale stress can extend the envelope of the analytical stress function on the surface of macro-scale stress derived from homogenized constitutive equations. The main focus of this study is to investigate the basic topology of unit cell structures with the cubic symmetric system and to formulate the plastic models to predict pressure dependent macro-scale stress surface functions.

Recently, the growth in the propulsion power and propeller size of typical energy saving ships has resulted in severe damages of the oil-lubricated stern tube bearing. Consequently, a more rational analytical method for the design of the shafting system is required. In this paper an analytical method applicable to the design of the oil-lubricated stern tube bearing and shafting system is presented. The method consists of the finite element analysis of the shafting system and the oil film hydrodynamics. The shafting system is modeled as a three-dimensional problem using beam elements taking account for the steady components of thrust, lateral forces and moments of the propeller as well as the elastic foundation effects. The oil film hydrodynamics is modeled as a two-dimensional problem. Equal and retangular elements employing hourglass control method are used for the construction of the oil film fluidity matrix. To search the quasi-static equilibrium position between the propeller shaft and the oil film, an optimization technique is employed. Some numerical results based on the proposed method are compared with some measured and numerical data available. They show acceptable agreements with the data.
Fixed connection is generally used for beam and column connections of concrete structures, but significant damages at the connection due to severe earthquakes have been reported. In order to reduce damages of the connection and improve seismic performance of the connection, several innovative connections have been suggested. One newly proposed connection type allows a rotation of the connection for applications in rotating or rocking beams, columns, and shear walls. Such structural elements would provide a nonlinear lateral force-displacement response since their contact depth developed during rotation is gradually reduced and the stress across the sections of the elements is non-linearly distributed around a contact area, which is called an elastic hinge region in the present study. The purpose of the present study is to define the elastic hinge region or length for the rocking columns, through investigating the cross-sectional stress distribution during their lateral behavior. Performing a finite element analysis (FEA), several parameters are considered including axial load levels (5% and 10% of nominal strength), different boundary conditions (confined-ends and cantilever types), and slenderness ratios (length/depth = 5, 7, 10). The FEA results showed that the elastic hinge length does not directly depend on the parameters considered, but it is governed by a contact depth only. The elastic hinge length started to develop after an opening state and increased non-linearly until a rocking point(pre-rocking). However, the length did not increase any more after the rocking point (post-rocking) and remained as a constant value. Half space model predicting the elastic hinge length is adapted and the results are compared with the numerical results.
This study presents the results of a regression analysis of the point-load strength ($I_{s(50)}$) and the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of granites in Korea. The regression was carried out for three cases using the least-squares method, reclassifying the granite samples based on their physical properties. The first regression analysis through the origin according to the weathering grade did not give a result with a sufficient degree of confidence, due to the small number of samples. However, the general trend of the correlation between UCS and $I_{s(50)}$according to weathering grade shows that the slope of the linear regression for weathered granite is steeper than that for fresh granite. The second analysis was a simple linear regression for all the granite samples using the least-squares method as well as a linear regression using the bootstrap resampling method in order to increase the confidence level and the accuracy of the regression results. The third regression considered the average strength of granite groups reclassified according to physical properties. These linear regression analyses yielded linear regression equations with slopes of 14 and small standard deviations being similar to values reported in previous studies on Korean granites, but whose intercept values range from 16 to 43 and have a larger standard deviation than those of the present study. In conclusion, it would be advisable to estimate UCS from $I_{s(50)}$, considering the error range derived from the deviation of the regression equations.
In this study, we have constructed a measuring system to investigate tensile stress measurement of tendons, which is employed in bridges, by means of the non-destructive and non-contact method. The measuring system consists of tensile stress applying apparatus up to 2 GPa, and power supply for ac and dc current to tendon directly to magnetize tendon in circular direction and to coil wound on yoke to magnetize tendon in axial direction. We have used two kinds of tendon, which were produced by different companies, using the measuring system constructed in this work. Two kinds of experiments are carried out in this work; $1^{st}$ experiment : ac current was applied to the tendon and dc current was applied to coil wound on the yoke, and voltage induced from search coil wound on yoke (SCY) was measured and $2^{nd}$ experiment : dc current was applied to the tendon and ac current was applied to coil wound on the yoke, and voltage induced from search coil on tendon (SCT) was measured. In case of $1^{st}$ experiment, voltage induced from SCY was changed below 200MPa tensile stress but the voltage was not increased above 200 MPa. In case of $2^{nd}$ experiment, voltage induced from SCT was decreased up to 1.5 GPa linearly. We expect that $2^{nd}$ experiment could be applied to the non-destructive testing of tensile stress measurement of tendon.

Recently, as the magnitude and frequency of earthquakes increases, research is needed to increase the ductility of the columns in order to prevent the collapse of structures. In this study, to evaluate the performance of columns reinforced with continuous transverse reinforcing bars, the FE model for the dynamic analysis of structures reinforced with continuous transverse reinforcing bars for circular and rectangular columns is to be verified using the results of uniaxial compression experiments in the previous study. As a result, the experimental value of the column reinforced with continuous transverse reinforcement and the result value related to the dynamic analysis showed similar behavior, and the reliability was high. As a result of the analysis, the usability of the rectangular column reinforced with continuous lateral reinforcing bars was confirmed because the dissipated energy performance of the columns reinforced with spiral reinforcing bars was higher than that of the columns reinforced with band reinforcing bars.

In this research, the effect of rock mass weathering on the side shear resistance of drilled shaft socketed into igneous-metamorphic rock was investigated. For that, 23 cast-in-place concrete piles with diameters varying from 400mm to 1,500mm were constructed at four different sites, and the static axial load tests were performed to examine the resistant behavior of the piles. A comprehensive field/laboratory testing program at the field test site was also performed to describe the in situ rock mass conditions quantitatively. The side shear resistance of rock socketed piles was found to have no intimate correlation with the compressive strength of the intact rock. However, the global rock mass strength, which was calculated by the Hoek and Brown criteria, was found to closely correlate to the side shear resistance. The ground investigation data regarding the rock mass conditions (e.g. $E_m$, $E_{ur}$, $p_{lm}$, RMR, RQD, j) were also found to be highly correlated with the side shear resistance, showing the coefficients of correlation greater than 0.75 in most cases. Additionally, the applicability of existing methods for the side shear resistance of weathered granite-gneiss was verified by comparison with the field test data. The existing methods which consider the effect of rock mass condition were modified and/or extended for weathered rock mass where mass factor j is lower than 0.15, and RQD is below 50%.

Fiber reinforced composite materials have various advantages in mechanical and chemical aspects. Not only high fatigue and chemical resistance, but also high specific strength and stiffness are attained, and therefore, damping characteristics are beneficial to marine piles. Since piles used for marine structures are subjected to compression and bending as well, detailed research is necessary. Current study examine the mechanical behavior under flexural and/or compressive loads using concrete filled fiber reinforced plastic composite piles, which include large size diameter. 25 pile specimens which have various size of diameters and lengths were fabricated using hand lay-up or filament winding method to see the effect of fabrication method. The inner diameters of test specimens ranged from 165 mm to 600 mm, and the lengths of test specimens ranged from 1,350 mm to 8,000 mm. The strengths of the fill-in concrete were 27 and 40 MPa. Fiber volumes used in circumferential and axial directions are varied in order to see the difference. For some tubes, spiral inner grooves were fabricated to reduce shear deformation between concrete and tube. It was observed that the piles made using filament winding method showed higher flexural stiffness than those made using hand lay-up. The flexural stiffness of piles decreases from the early loading stage, and this phenomenon does not disappear even when the inner spiral grooves were introduced. It means that the relative shear deformation between the concrete and tube wasn't able to be removed.

The steel pipe of steel-concrete composite piles increases the pile strength and induces the ductile failure by constraining the deformation of the inner concrete. In this research, the numerical models and the related input parameters were analyzed to simulate the axial load-movement relations, which were obtained from the compression loading tests for the cylindrical specimens of the steel pipe, the concrete, and the steel-concrete composite. As the results, the behavior of the steel pipe was simulated by the von-Mises model and that of the concrete by the strain-softening model, which decreases cohesion and dilation angles as the function of plastic strains. In addition, the reinforcing bars in the concrete were simulated by applying the yielding moment and decreasing the sectional area of the bars. The applied numerical models properly simulated the yielding behavior and the reinforcement effect of the steel-concrete composite piles. The parametric study for the real-size piles showed that the material strength of the steel-concrete composite pile increased about 10% for the axial loading and about 20~45% for the horizontal loading due to the reinforcement effect by the surrounding steel pipe pile.

Copper electrodeposition technology is essential for producing copper films and interconnects in the microelectronics industries including semiconductor packaging, semiconductors and secondary battery, and there are extensive efforts to control the microstructure of these films and interconnects. In this study, we investigated the influence of crystallographic orientation on the local plastic deformation of copper films for secondary batteries deformed by uniaxial tensile load. Crystallographic orientation maps of two electrodeposited copper films with different textures were measured using an electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) system and then used as initial conditions for crystal plasticity finite element analysis to predict the local plastic deformation behavior within the films during uniaxial tension deformation. Through these processes, the changes of the local plastic deformation behavior and texture of the films were traced according to the tensile strain, and the crystal orientations leading to the inhomogeneous plastic deformation were identified.
