  • The purpose of this study is to contribute enhancing the accuracy of viewshed analysis through the explanation for an analysis method of viewshed analysis using GIS. According to previous studies, the visible area using digital terrain in viewshed analysis depends on a visible interest area, scale of terrain, spatial resolution and surface data. In this study, we used trend analysis and RMSE analysis in order to find the effect of a visible interest area, scale of terrain, etc in viewshed analysis. Results of this study are as follows. First, the result of viewshed analysis depends on a visible interest area, scale of terrain, spatial resolution, surface data such as previous studies. Second, the results in forest area are reliable than those of flat area in terms of a visible interest area. Third, the results based on raster grid data are stable than those of TIN(triangulated irregular network) in terms of input surface data. Fourth, according to the result of trend and RMSE analysis, the spatial resolution for analysis is differently applied to different scales digital terrain map in viewshed analysis. In detail, it is desirable that the spatial resolution is set less than 10m(in the case of 1/1,000 digital terrain map), 20m(in the case of 1/5,000 map), 30m(1/25,000 map).

  • According to the development of technologies for generating the 3D spatial information, the needs for producing and updating the precise 3D objects with LoD 4 level are increased. On the other hand, the needs for real-time updating of 2D digital maps are expanded, based on the execution of various GIS projects. These 2D informations can be extracted from precisely constructed 3D spatial information, to do this the feasibility studies on extraction of the 2D information from the 3D spatial information is needed. In this study, 3D objects are modeled using multi-oblique images, and the objects are stereo-plotted using digital airborne images, as well. Then the two data sets are compared and analyzed. The results show that the accuracy assessments fulfill the 1/1,000 digital map accuracy standard of regulations for photogrametric surveying of National Geographic Information Institute, but the shapes and the areas of building objects are different between two data sets because of the portrayal standards. Consequently, researchers can conclude that it is possible to generate the building layer of large scale topographic map using multi-oblique images, but additional researches is needed to resolve the problems on differences of the portrayal standards.

  • The subjects of this study are to examine and to apply the methods of making 1 : 10,000 scale digital maps using Russian's 2 m resolution satellite images of Alternative and 8 m resolution stereo satellite images of MK-4 for the Kyoha area of Paju-city where aerial-photo surveying is not possible. A digital elevation model (DEM) was calculated from MK-4 images. With this DEM, the Alternative images were orthorectified. Ground control points (GCP) were acquired from GPS surveyings and were used to perform geometric corrections on Alternative images. From field investigation, thematic attributes are digitized on the monitor. RMS errors of the planar and vertical positions are estimated to ${\pm}0.4$ m and ${\pm}15$ m, respectively. The planar accuracy is better than an accuracy required by NGIS (national GIS) programs. Local information from field investigation was added and the resulting maps should be good as base maps for, such as, regional and urban plannings.

  • The transverse cylindrical projection has been used in Korea since 1910s when the nationwide geodetic network was firstly established. However, the projection has a number of different types of functions according to a way of its mathematical derivation as well as a section of its coefficients and terms, for instance Gauss- Schreiber(GS) and Gauss-Kruger(GK) types. Although the transverse cylindrical projection itself is assigned to a system, projected coordinates would be diverse with respect to the function used in the actual calculation. In order to investigate impact of functions used in the computation, five different equations (i.e., 2 GS and 3 GK) were implemented in this study by using MATLAB. A series of numerical simulation tests has been carried out to compare and characterize them in terms of projection accuracy, difference of projected coordinates and distortion. Furthermore, a comparison between GS and GK function was made under the Korean gridding system, consisting of four zones. Results from the numerical computations were qualitatively analyzed and summarized in this paper.

  • National digital maps (NDM) produced by diverse production methods through various stages are ready to distribute to public. The position accuracy problems in NDM should be inspected and evaluated to guarantee the quality of NDM. The purpose of this study is 1) to find out factors of impeding accuracy by examining the position accuracy of NDM on scales of 1:1,000 and 1:5,000, 2) to form the technical basis of making accurate digital maps and 3) to increase reliability and practical use of NDM. In this study, we found out 1) obstacles of making accurate mM especially in solving horizontal and vertical location accuracy problems and 2) error sources in production methods as well as stages. These results can be contributed to increase accuracy on modifying and upgrading NDM.

  • The 3 dimensional point positioning from SPOT imagery is performed by bundle adjustment methods of analytical and digital photogrammetry, and need the precise determination of image coordinates and accurate coordinates of ground control points. In this study, the authors analysed the digitized planimetric accuarcy and height accuracy of topographic maps in comparison with accurate coordinates by coordinates resulted by bundle adjustment in each cases between different acquisition method of ground control point coordinates and formats of SPOT imagery.
