This paper deal with optimal design of reinforced track as a track reinforcing method for transition area of track support stiffness in transition area between bridge and earthwork. When vehicle passes through transition area, dynamic properties between vehicle and track are studied by the analysis of vehicle-train interaction for the each case when reinforced tracks are used or not. furthermore, optimum decision of type and length of track are made based on the performance adapting variable parameters : support stiffness of track for bridge and earthwork, heading direction of vehicle and type and length of track.
This paper proposes an optimal design method of a seismic reinforcement system for the seismic performance of adjacent asymmetric-stiffness structures with viscous dampers. The first method considers plan asymmetry for efficient seismic reinforcement, and evaluates the seismic performance of optimal design applied to two cases of modeling: adjacent stiffness-asymmetric structures and adjacent stiffness-symmetric structures. The second method considers the response of asymmetric structures to derive the optimal objective function, and evaluates seismic efficiency of the objective function applied to two cases of responses: horizontal displacement and torsion. Numerical analyses are conducted on 7- and 10-story structures with a uni-asymmetric-stiffness plan using six cases of historic earthquakes, normalized to 0.4g. The results indicate that the seismic performance is excellent as modeled by adjacent asymmetric-stiffness structures and how much horizontal displacement is applied as the objective function.
Two-row Overlap Pile wall is a novel retaining wall system with high flexural rigidity and waterproofing for deep excavation support currently being developed in Korea. The Two-row Overlap Pile wall is constructed by making an overlap between consecutive four-axis (or two-axis) auger piles which themselves are overlapped and arranged in zigzag manner. In this study, the flexural rigidity of the Two-row Overlap Pile wall, including the effect of cross-sectional shape, was examined using both theoretical and numerical approaches. The results of investigation suggested that the Two-row Overlap Pile wall formed with two-row piles exhibit greatly higher flexural rigidity than conventional one-row pile walls such as Cast in place pile (CIP) and Secant pile wall (SPW), whereas the effect of overlap length between piles on the flexural rigidity is relatively minimal.
Many experimental results have revealed that the development of cavitaition during tensile deformation is limited by the Presence of liquid phases. However, the presence of liquid phases does not always lead to high-strain-rate superplasticity, because too much liquid causes intergranular decohesion at grain boundaries/interfaces in metal-matrix composites. Thus, it is important to examine the nature of interfaces of superplastic composites in order to understand the origin of superplastic flow related to liquid grain boundaries during high-strain-rate superplastic deformation. This study shows that a large elongation is obtained at the temperature, that is close to the onset temperature for partial melting in the superplastic composites, but the elongation significantly decreases at slightly higher temperatures, which are close to the end temperature fur partial melting. This indicates that there is an optimum amount of the liquid phase for obtaining high-strain-rate superplasticity in these materials.

This paper analyzed the partial differential equations of laminated composite shells of revolution by using the finite difference method. The proof that numerical results are reasonable and accurate is obtained through converge ratio analysis and commercial program LUSAS for the structural analysis. The purpose of this study is to examine closely the engineering advantages and to analyze the structural behaviors of the anisotropic shells of revolution. Thus, the relevant reinforcement and most suitable arrangement of fiber to produce the highest strength are proposed through the numerical results according to a variety of parameter study. Namely, the distribution of displacements and stress resultants are analyzed according to the change of meridian's curvature, the ratio of height-width of shell, subtended angle, fiber angle, and so on. Using these distribution, the most suitable shell may be proposed to produce the highest strength. Also, the configuration of the entire laminated composite conical shells is analysed, and a variety of the design criterion of circular conical shell are proposed and studied in engineering view points.

It should be noted that the use of the lathe scrap for making fiber reinforced cementitious composites(FRCCs) raised friendly environmental effect as well as economy because the lathe scrap is a by-product of steel manufactures and is occurred when lathe and milling works of them are conducted to process steel manufactures. Thus, the purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of measurements of lathe scrap on the characteristics of FRCCs. For this purpose, various lathe scraps were collected from processing plants of metal, and then these were processed 10mm, 20mm, and 40mm in lengths for 2mm and 4mm in widths, respectively. FRCCs containing lathe scraps were made according to their widths and lengths, and then characteristics such as the workability, compressive strength, and flexural strength of those were evaluated. As a result, it was observed from the test results that the optimum measurements of the lathe scrap for manufacturing FRCCs was 2mm in width and 40mm in length.
The cure properties of rubber compounds containing different adhesive compositions were examined. As the amounts of tannin were increased in the adhesive composition, the scorch time was increased and cure rate was decreased due to the size and shape of tannin molecules. Also, the effect of adhesive composition on the adhesion between rubber and fiber was examined by TCAT(Tire Cord Adhesion Test), The reinforcing cords used in this study were mon ofilaments of nylon 610 and nylon 66. According to the results, the optimum adhesion strength between rubber and fiber could be obtained with adhesives whose molar ratios of formaldehyde/resorcinol were above 5/1 in the recipes. Although the level of dip pick-up(DPU) on the reinforcing cord affects the adhesion strength, the DPU of nylon 610 monofilament did not affect the adhesion strength because the level of DPU was constant regardless of the adhesive compositions. In this case, the adhesion strength with the adhesive composition could be explained with the behavior of tannin in the adhesive.
In ship design or offshore structure design, the evaluation of buckling strength (or ultimate strength) is critical to the determination of scantling of stiffened plates. For this reason, it is useful to study the effect of applying different formula or the relationship between stiffened plate with buckling utilization factor (UF). It can facilitate a designer to decide how much the scantling should be reinforced or how much can be reduced for an optimal design. This paper conducts a comparative study for three buckling check methods; DNV-Ship-Rule, DNV-RP-C201, DNV-PULS. The capacity curves and 2D contour plot for utilization factors versus bi-axial in-plane stresses are compared. The contour plots of DNV-Ship-Rule and DNV-PULS show smoothly increasing trends of UF as the applied in-plane stresses increase, however that of DNV-RP-C201 shows rapidly increasing trend as the applied stresses go beyond transverse buckling stress. A sensitivity analysis is performed to investigate the influence level of each parameter of a stiffened plate on UF. Resulting from the analysis, plate thickness is identified to be the most affective parameter to UF regardless of the buckling check methods. Based on the addressed study, optimal designs for bottom plate of 165 K tanker corresponding to three formulas are compared with each other. DNV-PULS yields 1 mm and 2 mm less thickness than DNV-Ship-Rule and DNV-RP-C201, respectively.

The objective of this study is to develop knowledge-based system for the preliminary design and midship section design of bulk carrier and to enhance the applicability of knowledge engineering in the field of Naval Architecture. First, expert system shell called E.1 is developed in C language. E.1 supports backward-chaining, automatic iteration procedure and reiterative inference mechanism for efficient application of knowledge-based system in structural design. Knowledge representation in E.1 includes IF-THEN rules, 'facts'and 'tables'. Second, knowledge bases for the principal particulars and midship section design are developed by experimental formula, design standard and experiential knowlege. Third, hybrid system combined this knowledge-based system with the optimization program of midship section is developed. Finally, the simplified design method utilizing the regression analysis of the optimum results of stiffened plate is developed for facilitating the design process. Using this knowledge-based system, the design process and results for Bulk carrier and stiffened plates are discussed. It is concluded that knowledge-based system is efficient for preliminary design and midship section design of the ship. It is expected that the performance of the CAD system would be enhanced if the better knowledge-base is accumulated in the E.1 tool.
