In this paper, we propose the novel approach to enhance the visual quality of the digital image with adaptively sharpening and removing the noise. Image enhancement is performed in two ways. The pixels in the high dynamics area are sharpened by the adaptive unsharp mask with the parameter, which is derived using the statistical information of the image. On the other hand, the proposed algorithm do not perform the sharpening process in the uniform area that may cause the undesired artifact due to noise amplification, rather it performs smoothing to suppress the noise in this area. The decision, which process will be applied at the pixel, is also controlled by the statistics of the pixel dynamics. The proposed algorithm enhances the visual quality almost automatically by sharpening and smoothing at the same time with less parameter selection.
Raw files record luminance values corresponds to each pixel of a digital camera sensor. In digital imaging, controlling exposure to capture the first highlight stop is important on linear-distribution of raw file characteristic. This study sought to verify the efficiency of ETTR method and found the optimum over-exposure amount to maintain the first highlight stop to be the largest number of levels. This was achieved by over-exposing a scene with a raw file and converting it to under-exposure in a raw file converting software. Our paper verified the efficiency of ETTR by controlling the exposure range and ISOs. Throughout the results, if exposure increases gradually 6 steps, dynamic range is also increased. And it shows that the optimized exposure value is around + $1\frac{2}{3}$ stop over compared to the normal exposure with the high ISOs simultaneously. We compared visual noise value at $1\frac{2}{3}$ stop to the normal exposure visual noise. Based on the normal exposure's visual noise, we can confirm that visual noise decrement is increased by increasing ISOs. In this experimental result, we confirm that overexposure about + $1\frac{2}{3}$ stop is the optimum value to make the widest dynamic range and lower visual noise in high ISOs. Based on the study results, we can provide the effective ETTR information to consumers and manufacturers. This method will contribute to the optimum image performance in maximizing dynamic range and minimizing noise in a digital imaging.

There have been many studies on subject tests for 3D contents using 3D glasses, but there is a limited research for 3D contents using autostereoscopic display. In this study, we investigated to assess usability of electroencephalogram (EEG) as an objective evaluation for 3D contents with different quality using autosteroscopic display, especially for lenticular lens type. The image with optimal quality and the image with distorted quality were separately generated for autostereosopic display with lenticular lens type and displayed sequentially through lenticular lens for 26 subjects. EEG signals of 8 channels from 26 subjects exposed to those images were detected and correlation between EEG signal and the quality of 3D images were statistically evaluated to check differences between optimal and distorted 3D contents. What we found was that there was no statistical significance for a wave vibration, however b wave vibration shows statistically significant between optimal and distorted 3D contents. b wave vibration observed for the distorted 3D image was stronger than that for the optimal 3D image. This results suggest that subjects viewing the distorted 3D contents through lenticular lens experience more discomfort or fatigue than those for the optimum 3D contents, which resulting in the greater b wave activity for those watching the distorted 3D contents. In conclusion, these results confirm that electroencephalogram (EEG) analysis can be used as a tool for objective evaluation of 3D contents using autosteroscopic display with lenticular lens type.

In this paper, we proposed a method for compressing the static video test patterns in high quality to test the picture quality in DTV. In our method, we use the fact that the generated bits and average quantization value have almost identical distribution characteristics per each GOP and we propose a new target bit allocation method suitable for compressing the static test pattern while the target bit allocation method in MPEG-2 TM5 is suitable for the moving picture. The proposed target bit allocation method is to maintain the high quality video continuously by using the normalized complexities which are updated or maintained by means of picture qualities at each GOP. Experiment result showed that the test pattern stream encoded by MPEG-2 software with the proposed algorithm had a stable bit rate and good video quality during the decoding process.

Deinterlacing is a method to convert interlaced video, including two fields (even and odd), to progressive video. It can be divided into spatial and temporal methods. The deinterlacing method in the spatial domain can easily be hardware-implemented, but yields image degradation if information about the deinterlaced pixel does not exist in the same field. On the other hand, the method in the temporal domain yields a deinterlaced image with higher quality but uses more memory, and hardware implementation is more difficult. Furthermore, the deinterlacing method in the temporal domain degrades image quality when motion is not estimated properly. The proposed method is for deinterlacing in the spatial domain. It uses several deinterlacing methods according to statistical characteristics in neighboring pixel locations. In this procedure, the proposed method uses the C4.5 algorithm, a typical classification algorithm based on entropy for choosing optimal methods from among the candidates. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms previous deinterlacing methods in terms of objective and subjective image quality.
Because Y and C signals in a composite video signal are piled one on another in the same frequency, it is impossible to separate them completely. Therefore, it is necessary to develop efficient separation technique in order to minimize degradation of video quality. In this paper, we propose wavelet-based 3D comb filter algorithm and architecture for separating Y and C signals from a composite video signal. The proposed algorithm uses wavelet transform and thresholding of compared lines for acquiring the maximum video quality. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has better image quality and better PSNR than previous algorithms. For real application of the proposed algorithm, we developed a hardware architecture and the architecture was implemented by using VHDL. Finally, a VLSI layout of the proposed architecture was generated by using 0.25 micrometer CMOS process.
Liver disease is highly associated with death, and other abdominal diseases are also important causes affecting a person's lifespan, and a CT scan is essential when treating abdominal diseases. High radiation exposure is essential to create images that are good for reading, but managing the patient's radiation exposure is also essential. In this study, a post-processing wavelet algorithm was proposed to improve the image quality of abdominal CT images. Wavelets have the disadvantage of having to set a threshold value depending on the type of input image. Therefore, we experimentally proposed the threshold value of the wavelet and evaluated whether the image quality was effective. As a result of the experiment, the optimal threshold value for abdominal CT images was calculated to be 50. In the case of image 1, noise was improved by 49% and in the case of image 2, by 29%, and the contrast also increased. if the results of this study are applied for post-processing after abdominal CT, image quality can be improved and it will be helpful in disease diagnosis.
In the linear transformation method, the original image is divided into a plurality of range blocks, and a partial transform system for finding an optimal domain block existing in the image for each range block is used to adjust the performance of the compression ratio and the picture quality, The nonlinear transformation method uses only the rotation transformation among eight shuffle transforms. Since the search is performed only in the limited domain block, the coding time is faster than the linear transformation method of searching the domain block for any block in the image, Since the optimal domain block for the range block can not be selected in the image, the performance may be lower than other methods. Therefore, the nonlinear transformation method improves the performance by increasing the approximation degree of the brightness coefficient conversion instead of selecting the optimal domain block, The smaller the size of the block, the higher the PSNR value, The higher the compression ratio is increased groups were quadtree block divided to encode the image at best.
