In this study, the control performance of a smart top-story isolation system for tall buildings subjected to wind excitation was investigated. To this end, a 77-story tall building structure was employed and wind loads obtained from wind tunnel test were used for numerical simulations. The top-story of an example structure is separated from the main structure by a smart base isolation system composed of friction pendulum systems (FPS) and MR dampers. The primary purpose of the smart top-story isolation system is to mitigate the dynamic responses of the main structure, but the excessive movement of the isolated top story may cause the unstableness of the building structure. Therefore, the skyhook control algorithm was used to effectively reduce both responses of the isolated top story and the main structure. The control performance of the proposed smart top-story isolation system was investigated in comparison with that of the passive top-story isolation system. It has been shown from numerical simulation results that the smart top-story isolation system can effectively reduce wind-induced responses of the example building structure compared to the passive top-story isolation system with reduction of the top-story movement.

Varietal differences, heritabilities and the relationships of the characters including peduncle size of barley cultivars (Hordeum vulgare L.) were studied. Significant difference of the peduncle size was observed among the varieties. Flag leaf size and flag leaf sheath length also showed significant differences among varieties. Heritabilities of broad sense for peduncle length and diameter were 0.9638 and 0.5652. Heritabilities for flag leaf sheath length, flag leaf length and flag leaf width were 0.8143, 0.7929 and 0.8980, respectively. The peduncle length was significantly correlated with peduncle diameter, stem length, flag leaf sheath length, flag leaf length and kernels per spike. However, no relationship existed between peduncle length and spike length.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the optimal end-of-life care and well-dying perceived by nurses to provide the optimal end-of-life care for patients and their families. This subjects of the study were 121 nurses working in the ward or intensive care unit of a general hospital in Seoul, and the data collected from April 28 to May 12, 2021 were analyzed. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficients with the SPSS/WIN 27.0 program. The total average of the subjects' perceptions of the optimal end-of-life care was 4.04±0.82 on a five-point scale, indicating the overall level of 'agree' with the optimal end-of-life care. The total average of well dying perceived by the subjects was 3.63±1.14 on a five-point scale, and the most important recognized questions was to die peacefully. Of general characteristics, there was a significant differences on optimal end-of-life care according to age (t=-.97, p=.013). The nurse group in their 30s showed higher consent for end-of-life care than those in their 20s. An analysis of the correlation between the optimal end-of-life care and well-dying showed that there was no significant correlation. This study suggest that education should be provided to raise awareness of end-of-life care for young nurses with low experience.

대한기계설비단체총연합회가 창립 30주년을 맞아 정부로부터 매년 7월 16일을 '기계설비의 날'로 지정받음은 물론 지난 7월 15일 '제1회 기계설비의 날' 기념식을 성대히 치르면서 축제의 한마당을 펼쳤다. 대한기계설비단체총연합회는 기계설비분야의 당면과제 해결 및 업계의 건전한 발전과 단결을 도모하고 기술개발을 촉진하기 위해 지난 1986년 설립되었다. 한일엠이씨 최상홍 회장은 총연합회 설립을 주도하였고 초대 회장까지 맡아서 기계설비업계의 단합과 발전을 이끌었다. 기계설비업계에서 그는 "온 몸으로 실천하는 작은 거인", "기술향상에 뜻을 둔 선각자이며 기술보국에 앞장선 거보(巨寶)", "위트 있는 분위기 메이커", "원리원칙과 의로움을 중요시 하는 멋쟁이", "철두철미한 메모광", "기계설비업계의 대부" 등으로 불리운다. 우리나라에 '기계설비'라는 단어 자체가 생소했던 1950년대, 척박한 환경의 기계설비에 입문하여 오늘날 최첨단 기계설비산업으로 거듭나기까지 최상홍 회장은 기계설비 발전을 이끌었을 뿐만 아니라 많은 후배들을 배출해냈다. 또한 대한기계설비건설협회를 비롯하여 대한설비공학회, 냉동공조산업협회, 한국설비기술협회, 대한기계설비단체총연합회 등 업계 및 학계에 그의 손길이 미치지 않은 곳이 없을 정도로 족적은 거대하다. 본지는 '최상홍 설비인생 50년 간행위원회'가 지난 2006년 발간한 "'적당'으로는 자부심을 얻을 수 없다" 책을 통해 의리와 사랑으로 살아온 최상홍 회장의 기계설비 인생 60년을 더듬어 본다.
