  • A series of centrifuge model tests to investigate the suction pile pullout loading capacity in sand have been performed. The main parameters that affect the pullout loading capacity of a suction pile include the mooring line inclination angle and the padeye position of the suction pile. With respect to the padeye position, the maximum pullout loading capacity is obtained when the padeye position is near 75% of the pile length from the top. The direction of the pile rotation changes when the padeye position reaches somewhere near 50~75% for all mooring line inclination angles. The translation displacement of suction pile to develop the time of maximum pullout loading capacity decreased as the mooring line inclination angle increased. In addition, the vertical displacements of the center of a suction piles for all cases appeared to develop toward the ground surface.

  • This paper describes interference effect analysis of transverse member based on large-scale pullout test results of steel strip reinforcement with '${\sqcap}$' type transverse member. The maximum passive resistance has a difference according to the installed location of transverse member, and the total pullout resistance is increased, when transverse member was closed to the wall facing. The degree of interference confirmed that the install location of transverse member cannot reflect the pullout force differential, if S/B is equal. However, The interference factor based on maximum passive resistance reflected the differential of maximum passive resistance and install location of transverse member.

  • This paper describes the results of a pile pullout test considering the confine pressure and fines content of the ground. The Pullout tests were conducted under various ground conditions using model piles. The effect of ground confine pressure on the pullout resistance and the pullout resistance parameters of the pile were evaluated based on the experimental results. The results of pullout test showed that the maximum pullout resistance occurred at a pullout displacement of about 7mm to 9mm, regardless of the fines content and the confine pressure of the ground. The maximum pullout resistance of the pile decreased as the fines content of the ground increased, and this trend became clearer as the confine pressure increased. The pullout resistance calculated by theoretical formula was compared with the experimental results in order to ensure the reliability of the pullout test results. The comparative results showed that the experimental and theoretical values showed a tendency to decrease the pullout resistance as the fines content increased, in all confine pressure conditions. The analysis result of the pullout resistance parameters confirmed that the pullout resistance was greatly influenced by the adhesion compared to the interface friction angle, as the fines content of the ground around the pile increased.

  • Wood piles are rarely used in the construction of a greenhouse in Korea, but they are relatively more often used in other countries, such as the Netherlands. There are several advantages associated with wood piles: they are more cost-effective, less time-consuming, and more ecofriendly than the steel pipes (SPs) and pre-stressed highstrength (PHC) piles. However, one of the limiting conditions is that they have to be installed below the groundwater level to prevent decay. Since the groundwater levels are generally high in the reclaimed lands in Korea, wood piles are expected to be used often as reinforcements for foundations of greenhouses in these areas. In this study, we measured the uplift capacities of wood piles through in-situ uplift capacity tests with an aim to provide basic design data for wood pile foundations. In order to test their applicability, we then compared these experimentally measured ultimate uplift capacities with the ones calculated through some of the existing theoretical equations. The wood piles used in the loading tests were made of softwood (pine wood), and the tests were performed using piles with different diameters (∅25cm and ∅30cm) and embedded depths (1m, 3m, and 5m). The test results revealed that the uplift capacity of the wood piles showed a clear linearly increasing tendency in proportion to the embedded depth, with the ultimate uplift capacities for the diameters 25cm and 30cm being 9.38 and 10.56tf, respectively, at the embedded depth of 5m; thus demonstrating uplift capacities of ${\geq}9tf$. The comparison between the actually measured values of the uplift capacity and the ones calculated through equations revealed that the latter, which were obtained using the ${\alpha}$ method, were generally in an approximate agreement with the in-situ measured values.

  • Because of the environmental problem during the pile driving, the use of low noise-vibration auger-drilled pilling is increasing to solve noise and vibration problem in pilling. In Korea, SIP (Soil-Cement Injected Precast Pile) method is mainly used as auger-drilled pilling. But, a proper bearing capacity evaluation formula has not been suggested, yet. To improve and supplement this situation, direct shear tests between SIP pile skin interface and soil were executed under various conditions. Through the analysis of test results, skin resistance characteristics of SIP were investigated thoroughly. Also, the maximum unit skin resistance capacity evaluation formulae on SM, SC soil was suggested.

  • Shear Connector should be used to fix the PHC pile with extension wall in order to utilize PHC-W retaining wall as permanent wall. The pullout behaviours on shear connectors anchored into PHC-W pile were observed as two modes. The first type behaviour showed that after reaching the maximum pullout resistance, the anchorage was broken and shear connector was pulled out abruptly. The second type behaviour showed that even after arriving the maximum pullout resistance, the anchorage was not destroyed and there was a progressive increase in pullout displacement. The maximum pullout resistance of the steel anchor shear connector is larger than that of deformed bar shear connector. The larger the diameter and the longer the embedment length of shear connector, the higher the maximum pullout resistance would be. The pullout displacements corresponding to the maximum pullout resistance of the shear connector showed various ranges regardless of the materials, the diameters and the anchoring lengths. A-D20 shear connectors showed a pull-out displacement of about 8~10 mm. A-D16, D-D19 and D-D16 shear connectors exhibited a pulling displacement of about 14~20 mm, but a pulling displacement of about 6~10 mm when the anchoring lengths were 50 and 80 mm.

  • In this study, the pull-out resistance behavior of the anchor with the bump type resistors at the anchor body was experimentally investigated. In the model tests, the pull-out resistance was measured by pulling out the anchor at a constant speed. Anchor body was installed in the center of the circular sand tank. Pull-out tests were conducted for 10 conditions. The anchor type (existence of the resistor), the friction conditions of the anchor body surface ($1/3{\phi}$, $2/3{\phi}$, ${\phi}$), the bump type resistor set number (1set, 2set, 4set), and the height of resistors (0.05d, 0.10d, 0.20d) were varied. The load-displacement relationship for each conditions was measured during the pull-out tests at a constant speed (1 mm/min). Maximum pull-out length was 80 mm. As a result, the pull-out behavior of the friction type anchor and the expansion type anchor was different. As the number of resistor increased, the maximum pull-out resistance increased and the residual pull-out resistance ratio increased significantly, which were at 171~591 percent larger than that of the friction type anchor.

  • While the existing pile foundation had the role of supporting the superstructure or reducing the earth pressure, recently there are cases where it is integrated with the superstructure to increase the lateral resistance. This study aims to evaluate a lateral resistance of block-type breakwaters with group piles by modelling experiments. The lateral resistance and bending moments of the piles by penetrated depths for the piles were measured. As a result, it was found that the lateral resistance increased as the depth of embedment of the group piles. In particular, the lateral resistance was 1.52 times greater in the case where the pile embedded up to the riprap layer than the case where the pile was embedded into the block. For the bending moment, the rear piles ware larger than the front piles, and the outside piles were larger than the inside piles. The location of the maximum bending moment in the ground was shown at the interface between the riprap layer and the natural ground.

  • It was tested in field that a Pull-out Capacity and Shear resistance strength change of reed, common reed and sedge which were planted by mat-type turf and used for revegetation of bank. The testes were done for 9 weeks from end of May and the grasses were planted on sandy soil. Roots grew fastly after planted and increasement of a common reed and sedge root were reduced after 4 weeks but increasement of reed roots were not reduced. The difference of increasement of roots is due to a difference of propagation method. Sedge propagate by seed. Reed and commom reed propagate by seed and subterranean stem and reed has bigger subterranean stem than common reed. So increasement of common reed and sedge roots were slow than reed. By root growth pattern, increasement of pull-out capacity and shear resistance strength showed very similar way of root growth, those of common reed and sedge were fast in early stage of cultivation but were reduced. But increasement of pull-out capacity and shear resistance strength of reed was not reduced. A Maximum shear resistance strength called critical shear resistance strength of common reed and sedge can be Analyzed at 11 weeks after planted.
