  • Maximum pressure difference in central core type 80th super_tall buildings was estimated as 75 Pa during no outside wind due to the winter stack effect. Maximum pressure difference of 225 Pa can be obtained depending on the location of air injection fan during the stairway pressurization at fire. Bottom_only air injection system provided the best results in the sense of required air flow rates and pressure distributions. Top_only air supply system was estimated as the worst for this country. It revealed that the decrease of the temperature in the stairway due to the cold outside air injection reduced the required flow rates of the fan and significantly changed the distribution of pressure differences.

  • An analysis is presented of key phenomena and scenario which imply some general trends for beyond design-basis-accident in Kori-1 PWR dry containment. The study covers a wide range of severe accident sequences initiated by small break LOCA. The MARCH computer code, with KAERI modifications was used in this analysis. The major emphasis of the paper are two folds, 1) the phenomenologic understanding of severe accident and 2) a study of H2 combustion and debris/ water interactions in a specific small break LOCA for Kori-1 plant. The sensitivity studies for the specific plant data and thermal interaction modelings used in the SASA were performed. The results show that if hydrogen burning does occur at low concentration, the resulting peak pressure does not exceed the design value, while the lower concentration assumption results in repeated burning due to the continuing H$_2$ generation. For debris/water interaction, the particle size has no effect on the magnitude of peak pressure for the amount of water assumed to be in the reactor cavity. But, the occurrence of peak pressure is considerably delayed in case of using the dryout correlation. The peak containment pressure predicted from the hydrogen combustion and steam pressure spite during full core meltdown scenario does not present a severe threat to the containment integrity.

  • A quantitative risk assessment and consequence analysis for PBL(Poly Butadiene Latex) reaction processes were performed. As a result of the Quantitative risk assessment, for the accident probability of PBL reactors causing a reaction runaway, was calculated as $9.197{\times}10^{-5}/yr$ The most important factor that affected the accident probability of PBL reactor was the relief device. When the reactor exploded, peak overpressure at the target point was $5.066{\times}10^5(Pa)$ and the range of effects windows to be broken occurred in almost all of the factory areas. The maximum radius of effect was 27m, in which workers could be die by the direct for eardrum damage was calculated at 77m. When the PBL reactor exploded, the extent of structural damage to buildings was calculated from the center of the explosion to a range of 52m. The results of the study's assessment have provided a direction for facility's improvement as well as effective safety investment.

  • Two capacitance diaphragm gauges(CDG) and two resonance silicon gauges(RSG) were calibrated using an ultrasonic interferometer as a national low vacuum standard in KRISS. The CDG has superior pressure resolution and is rugged as well as resistant to over-pressure because of all-metal inner components. Meanwhile, the RSG is a new type of MEMS sensor that has excellent calibration stability and is resistant to mechanical shocks. The calibration uncertainties were analyzed according to the ISO procedures. Results showed that the maximum difference of the expanded uncertainties was $9\times10^{-3}$Pa at the generated pressure of 100 Pa for the two different types. It is remarkable that the RSG can be used as a transfer standard at low vacuum since their accuracies were found to be within 0.5 %.

  • To evaluate the safety of propane cylinder, the flame test was performed by the flame exposure scenario of propane cylinder. The cylinder which was exposed in a flame was rapidly occurred to increase the internal pressure by liquid expansion, if so it cause of physical explosion. Therefore, the cylinder which was applied with thermal pressure relief device sholud be not bursted and the propane should be discharged to outside safely. The flame average temperature that was around of cylinder is $600^{\circ}C$, and then it increased $700^{\circ}C$ by discharged propane. The result of flame test, the cylinder was deformed, but it was not bursted. The regulations of flame exposure test for propane cylinder were not restricted, this paper can be applied to restrict the flame test if the cylinder is possible to expose the flame. Also, the results is expected as reference for estimation of the pressure cylinder performance.

  • Three failure cases of CNG composite vessels were reported since after January 2005. The 1st and 2nd accidents were indebted to vessel defect and installation mistake. The 3rd was caused by gas leak at pipe connections. In this paper various aspects were studied based on information of the three failure analysis, which must be improved for better safety of the CNG bus system. Overpressure region caused by vessel explosion was theoretically predicted and also assessed by PHAST program. Explosion of 120 l vessel under 20 MPa is equivalent to 1.2 kg TNT explosion. The predicted value by PHAST was more serious than theoretical one. However, actual consequence of explosion was much less than both of the predicted consequences. Since the CNG vessel was designed by the performance based design methodology, it is difficult to verify whether the required process and tests were properly conducted or not after production. If material toughness is not enough, the vessel should be weak in brittle fracture at early in the morning of winter season since the metal temperature can be lower than the transition temperature. If autofrettage pressure is not correct, fatigue failure due to tensile stress during repeated charging is possible. One positive aspect is that fire did not ocurred after vessel failure. This may be indebted to fast diffusion of natural gas which hindered starting fire.

  • In realizing a hydrogen society, it is important to secure the safety of the hydrogen refueling station, which is the facility where consumers can easily meet hydrogen. The hydrogen refueling station consists of compressed gas facilities that store high-pressure hydrogen, and there is a risk that the high-pressure compressed gas facility will rupture due to a fire explosion due to hydrogen leakage in the facility or the influence of surrounding fires. Accordingly, the Korea Gas Safety Corporation is making every effort to find out risk factors from the installation stage, reflect them in the design, and secure safety through legal inspection. In this study, a TNT explosion demonstration test using a protection wall was conducted to confirm the safety effect of the protection wall installed at the hydrogen refueling station, and the empirical test results were compared and verified using FLACS-CFD, a CFD program. As a result of the empirical test and CFD analysis, it was confirmed that the effect of reducing the explosion over-pressure at the rear end of the protection wall decreased from 50% to up to 90% depending on the location, but the effect decreased when it exceeded a certain distance. The results of the empirical test and computer analysis for verifying the safety of the protection wall will be used in proposals for optimizing the protection wall standards in the future.

  • During deep drilling, confined aquifers can present various challenges such as the inability to remove cuttings, rapid groundwater influx, and mud loss. Particularly in flowing well conditions, it is essential to apply the suitable mud density since the aquifer can generates an overpressurized condition. This paper proposes a method for determining the suitable mud density while drilling (SMD) through confined aquifers using mud window analysis and applies it to a case study. The minimum mud density at each depth, which represents the lower limit of the mud window, is determined by the equivalent mud density pore pressure gradient (or by adding a trip margin) at that depth. The pore pressure gradient of a confined aquifer can be calculated using the piezometric level or well head pressure of the aquifer. As the borehole reaches the confined aquifer, there is a significant increase in pore pressure gradient, which gradually decreases with increasing depth. The SMD to prevent a kick can be determined as the maximum value among the minimum mud densities in the open hole section. After entering the confined aquifer, SMD is maintained as the minimum mud density at the top of the aquifer during the drilling of the open hole section. Additionally, appropriate casing installation can reduce the SMD, minimizing the risk of mud loss or invasion into the highly permeable aquifer.
