  • In this study, the availability of slurry composting and biofiltration (SCB) solution as an alternative for synthetic nutrient solution was determined by monitoring the growth, fruit yield, and fruit quality of cherry tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L. 'Unicon'). Treatments for nutrient solution were consist of SCB 1/2N, 1N, 2N, and commercial nutrient solution 1N (CNS 1N) based on nitrogen concentration (218.32 $mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$) of cherry tomato nutrient solution (control 1N). All nutrient solution including SCB solution (440~520 mL per day) was supplied to rock wool medium using a timer. After 31 days of transplanting, fresh and dry weights of shoots, leaf area, plant height, stem diameter, SPAD value and number of node were measured. After measuring growth characteristics of tomato plants, total fruit yield, ratio of marketable fruit yield, fruit weight, total soluble solids content, total acidity, total phenolic concentration, and antioxidant capacity were determined once a week for 7 weeks. As a result, among the SCB treatments, SCB 1/2N was similar to control 1N and CNS 1N in terms of fresh and dry weights of shoots, leaf area, stem diameter, number of node, and SPAD value. Increased N concentration of SCB inhibited the growth of tomato plants. Total fruit yield of SCB 1/2N was 47% of that of control 1N which showed the best result. Percentage of marketable fruit yield in SCB 1/2N was about 58%. Soluble solids contents, total acidity, total phenolic concentration and antioxidant capacity was the highest in SCB 2N and the other treatments were not shown any difference. Blossom-end rot rarely occurred in control 1N and CNS 1N while SCB treatments without Ca induced the physiological disorder of 7~19%. In conclusion, SCB 1/2N was good for the vegetative growth of cherry tomato plants but reduced yield and quality of fruit compared with control 1N and CNS 1N. Thus, it is possible to apply SCB solution to grow cherry tomato plants hydroponically but in the consideration of fruits yield and quality additional supply of several minerals would be required.

  • In this study, we examined the changes of fruit number and fruit weight according to the length of bearing branch of Actinidia arguta and identified the correlation the length of bearing branch and fruit characteristics. The fruit weight and the fruit number of A. arguta bearing branch which length are below 15 cm and over 30 cm were 11.7 g, 4.3 and 12.3 g, 13.8, respectively. From the results, the bearing brach which length was below 15 cm must be removed in winter season pruning. The pruning experiment was conducted to examine the effects on fruit quality and yield of A. arguta. Total fruit yield of heavy-pruning was $14.3{\pm}1.5kg/tree$. The production of fruits over 15 g wight was $8.2{\pm}0.9kg/tree$, that of fruits between 10 g to 15 g was $4.0{\pm}0.7kg/tree$, and that of fruit below 10 g was $2.1{\pm}0.3kg/tree$, respectively. Average fruit yield of nonpruning was $26.7{\pm}2.1kg/tree$, fruit yield over 15 g, between 10 g and 15 g, and below 10 g were $2.5{\pm}0.5kg/tree$, $19.2{\pm}1.4kg/tree$, and $5.0{\pm}0.6kg/tree$, respectively. Distribution of high quality fruit (over 15 g) showed that non-pruning was almost 15~16 g but pruning was evenly distributed between 15 g and 20 g. According to the survey, The high quality fruit (over 15 g) would not be harvested if the winter pruning is not applied in the A. arguta cultivation.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of time of hand-thinning on vegetative growth, bitter pit incidence, fruit quality, and return bloom in 'Gamhong'/M.9 apple trees. The time of hand-thinning were 3, 5, 7 and 9 weeks after full bloom, and the primary thinning (leaving only the king fruit on cluster) and secondary thinning (adjusting crop load) were conducted at the same time. The time of hand-thinning was correlated to the vegetative growth, average fruit wight, yield, soluble solids content, bitter pit incidence, and return bloom, negatively, and to the yield of middle grade fruits (fruit weight was 250-299g and none pit on fruit surface) per tree, calcium contents of leaves, and fruit red color, positively. There was no significant effect of time of hand-thinning on fruit firmness, titratable acidity, and total incomes per tree. In conclusion, if the time of hand-thinning of 'Gamhong'/M.9 apple tree was completed at 9 weeks after full bloom, it could produce about 300g of high-quality fruit without bitter pit.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of deep sea water on fruit quality and yield of tomato. In the deep sea water treatments, fruit growth and weight were decreased as the concentration of deep sea water increased. Especially, the fresh weight of second truss was decreased significantly than first truss. Soluble solid content was increased significantly in higher concentration treatment especially at 30mM and 40mM treatment. That was increased more in the first than in the second truss fruits. Most of hexose in fruits were glucose and fructose. The reason of increased glucose and fructose contents was the decline of growth because of salinity stress by deep sea water treatment. however deep sea water treatment increased the lycopene content, especially in 20mM treatment. It is assumed that deep sea water treatment cause induction and promotion of ethylene. The higher concentration of deep sea water to the solution, the eater fruit quality improvement was noticed. However, proportional yield reduction accompanied concentration, 20mM deep sea water improved fruit quality without a significant yield reduction. The Re content was the highest among ginsenosides in all treatments. The contents total of ginsenosides in all treatments, except EC 8 treatment, was higher than those in the controlled treatment. The PT/PD value was 1.31 of the lowest in the EC 8 treatment and was 2.52 of the highest in the EC6 treatment. Rf contents in high increase was detected at all treated ginseng roots.

  • Red and blue lights are effective wavelengths for photosynthesis in plants. In this study, we determined the effects of various combined ratios of red to blue LEDs on the quality of cherry tomato seedlings prior to transplantation, and their subsequent effects on the yield and quality of tomato fruits after transplanting. Two-week-old cherry tomato seedlings (Solanum lycopersicum cv. 'Cuty') were cultivated under various combined ratios of red (R; peak wavelength 655 nm) to blue (B; 456 nm) LEDs [red:blue = 41:59 (59B), 53:47 (47B), 65:35 (35B), 74:26 (26B), 87:13 (13B), or 100:0 (0B)] and fluorescent lamps and raised for 27 days. The cherry tomato seedlings were subsequently transplanted into a venlo-type greenhouse and cultivated for 75 days. At the seedling stage, the shoot fresh weight of seedlings in all RB combined treatments, except 0B and 59B, was higher than that of the control after 27 days of LED treatment. Shoot dry weight and leaf area also showed trends similar to that of shoot fresh weight. The stem length was significantly higher in 13B, 26B, and 35B treatments compared with the control and other treatments. In particular, the stem length of 26B plants was approximately 3.2 times longer than that of 59B plants. At 37 days after transplanting, the number of nodes was significantly higher in 26B and 47B plants, and the plant height of 26B plants was significantly higher than that of control and 59B plants. Total fruit yield in 26B plants, which was the highest, was approximately 1.6 and 1.8 times higher than that in control and 59B plants, respectively. Thus, the results of this study indicate that various combined ratios of red to blue LEDs directly affected to the growth of cherry tomato seedlings and may also affect parameters of reproductive growth such as fruit yield after transplantation.

  • This study was conducted to investigate productivity of strawberry plants as affected by propagation method and cultivation system. Transplants propagated by cutting propagation and pinning propagation were planted and grown for a whole production period in soil and hydroponic cultivation systems. Growth parameters, fruit productivity, and fruit quality were measured during the whole harvest period. The results showed that propagation method and cultivation system had significant effects on vegetative growth of strawberry plants. Total fruit yield per plant and average fruit weight per fruit during the whole harvest period were significantly lower in the plants grown in soil cultivation system. Total unmarketable fruit ratio was significantly greater in soil cultivation system than that in hydroponic cultivation system. Small fruits were the primary unmarketable fruits in soil cultivation system, while malformed fruits were the primary unmarketable fruits in hydroponic cultivation system. The overall high quality of fruit was found in February, and the plants cultivated in hydroponic cultivation system had higher quality of fruit as compared with that in soil cultivation system. It is concluded that cutting propagation is better than pinning propagation, and hydroponic cultivation system is better than soil cultivation system for fruit productivity of strawberry.

  • 다래(Actinidia arguta (Siebold & Zucc.) Planch. ex Miq.)

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of stem number on plant growth, fruit quality, and yield of sweet peppers grown in greenhouses under supplemental lighting in winter. The seedlings were transplanted at 3.2 plants·m-2 on October 26, 2020, and started supplemental lighting with 32 high pressure sodium lamps for 16-hour photoperiod from December 1, 2020 to May 25, 2021. Stems were differently trained with 2 and 3 numbers after branching nodes were developed. In the final harvest, the plant height was significantly shorter in the 3 stem-plants than in the 2 stem-plants. The number of nodes per stem and the leaves per plant were increased in the 3 stem-plants than in the 2 stem-plants, while the leaf area was less affected. There were no significant differences in the dry mass of leaves, stems, and immature fruits between the 2 and 3 stem-plants. The fruit fresh weight and fruit dry weight in the 3 stem-plants were decreased by 17% and 12% at 156 days after transplanting (DAT), and by 17% and 15% at 198 DAT compared to those in the 2 stem-plants, respectively. The marketable fruit rates were 93.6% and 95.4% in the 2 and 3 stem-plants, respectively. The total fruit yield in the 3 stem-plants was increased by 30.2% as compared to that in the 2 stem-plants. We concluded that the 3-stem-training cultivation positively affected the total fruit yield by sustaining adaptive vegetative growth of the plants. This result will help producers make useful decisions for increasing productivity of sweet peppers in greenhouses.
