  • Ceria is one of the most important catalytic materials which can be used in three-way catalysts, waste water treatment, petroleum refining, etc. So far, many methods have been studied to produce ceria nanoparticles. In this study, ceria nanoparticles were prepared via solvothermal synthesis using supercritical methanol in short reaction time using a batch reactor. The size of synthesized ceria nanoparticles in supercritical methanol is 6 nm without capping agent, which is smaller than that made in supercritical water at the same conditions of $400^{\circ}C$ and 30 MPa. Size difference results from density and critical point difference between water and methanol and slow reaction rate at the surface of ceria particles in supercritical methanol which reduces crystal growth rate. Several organic compounds were added to modify the surface of ceria nanoparticles, and in-situ surface modification was confirmed by FT-IR and TGA analysis. Surface modified ceria nanoparticles have excellent dispersibility in organic solvent. Size and shape of surface modified ceria particles can be controlled by adjusting molar ratio of modifier to precursor and selection of modifier.

  • Factors affecting the supercritical carbon dioxide extraction of camptothecin(CPT) and 10-hydroxycamptothecin(HCPT) from the dried powder of Cmptotheca acuminata were studied. Only a few amount of CPT and HCPT was extracted with pure supercritical carbon dioxide. Methanol and ethanol were efficient modifiers to extract CPT and HCPT. At $40^{\circ}C$, 250 bar, 1 mL/min flow rate, 41% of CPT and 35% of HCPT were extracted with supercritical carbon dioxide modified with 16% of methanol. The diffusion effect of HCPT on extraction efficiency was studied in this solid-fluid system. Round matrix hot-ball model assumption revealed that the value of D/$r^2$ was 0.0072 $min^{-1}$ which was higher than that of solvent extraction with methanol.

  • We depolymerized PET in supercritical methanol and observed the yield of DMT at various reaction conditions. At subcritical state below $240^{\circ}C$, the yield of DMT was very low, about only 50%. It increased dramatically to 80% at supercritical state above $260^{\circ}C$, thereafter the increasing rate was reduced significantly. Similarly, at subcritical state of 6.89 MPa, the DMT yield was only 50%, but it increased abruptly to 85% at supercritical state of 10.34 MPa, yielding no further increase above the pressure. Within 10 minutes after the beginning of the reaction, the DMT yield reached 80%, indicating that the significant portion of the reaction has proceeded, and then, the yield increased slowly. The methanol/PET ratio of 8 showed the maximum DMT yield. We found the optimum depolymerization condition fur PET methanolysis is temperature $300^{\circ}C$, pressure 10.34 MPa, reaction time 40 minutes, and methanol/PET ratio of 8.

  • The composite membranes were made by grafting using supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) impregnation and polymerization procedures. The membranes were synthesized by changing amount of monomer. The polypropylene grafted polystyrene sulfonic acid (PP-g-pssa) membranes were characterized with various methods. The morphology and structure of PP-g-pssa membranes were analyzed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). As amount of monomer was increased, ion conductivity, cell performance was increased and methanol permeability was decreased. However PP-g-pssa membranes with 1.5g monomer and over had similar values of methanol permeability, ion conductivity and cell performance.

  • The purpose of this study was to find an optimum extraction condition of acanthoside-D from acanthopanax cortex with supercritical carbon dioxide as a solvent. In this effort, effects of the extraction conditions including pressure, temperature and presence or absence of a cosolvent on the extraction efficiency were investigated. The ethanol, water or 50% methanol was used as a cosolvent whilst the operating pressure ranged from 200 bar to 300 bar. The acanthoside-D concentrations were determined by means of HPLC equipped with a UV detector. From the results, it was observed that increase of higher pressure led to the higher extraction efficiency. Further, water was found to be the best cosolvent among the entrainers tested.

  • Biodegradable poly (L-lactide) (L-PLA) solution in methylene chloride was precipitated into microparticles by using supercritical carbon dioxide modified with polar cosolvents. The effects of the amount of polar cosolvents, solution concentration, temperature, and solution flow rate on the formation of microparticles were investigated. The mean particle size was found to increase with the increase of solution concentration and flow rate. It was also observed that the particle size not only increases but the size distribution also becomes less uniform as the temperature increases. The percent recovery of microparticles was found to be 30∼40% at all experimental conditions. The supercritical carbon dioxide modified with methanol and ethanol was employed to enhance the recovery, resulting in significant improvement up to about 80 and 70%, for methanol and ethanol, respectively. Furthermore, the mean diameter of L-PLA microparticles was found to be less than 1 $\mu\textrm{m}$ for both cosolvents.

  • We investigated the recycling method to re-plasticize cross-linked polyethylene by using supercritical methanol. The cross-linked polyethylene is successfully fragmented to thermoplasticized polyethylene with little degradation reactions in supercritical fluids. The thermo-plasticization reaction was accelerated with increase in temperature in the range from $360^{\circ}C$ to $400^{\circ}C$, resulting in decrease in crosslinking density, molecular weight and mechanical properties. However, the thermoplasticized polyethylene at $360^{\circ}C$ showed comparable tensile strength and impact strength with a raw resin of crosslinked polyethylene. Chemical structure of main chain of polyethylene was not affected by reaction condition.

  • Poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) has been used as biocompatible and biodegradable polymer in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and electronics. Micro-particles of PVP were produced using an aerosol solvent extraction system (ASES). Dichloromethane (DCM) and supercritical carbon dioxide were used as solvent and antisolvent, respectively. The mean diameter of the obtained polymer particles ranged from 0.184 to $0.249\;{\mu}m$. The relationship between particle size and initial drop size was also considered.

  • Biodiesel is synthesized by transesterification of vegetable or animal oils with alcohols. Since it has similar characteristic with diesel fuel, it can be used as a fuel by mixing with diesel fuel. Moreover, it is advantageous that biodiesel can reduce air pollution emitted from fuel combustion and is produced from sustainable energy, biomass. Recently, many researchers have investigated biodiesel synthesis using supercritical methanol since it is economical due to shorter reaction time and simple separation/purification process, compared with conventional alkali- or acid-catalyzed process. By the development of biodiesel production process from waste edible oil using supercritical methanol, it can be expected to utilize potential energy resources, reduce carbon dioxide emission, and improve environmental conditions.

  • The extraction of taxol and baccatin III from the ground needles of Taxus cuspidata were carried out by using supercritical carbon dioxide with and without cosolvents such as ethylacetate and methanol at 300 bar and 313K. Taxol is a promising anticancer agent and baccatin III is a precursor of semisysthesis of taxol. The taxol and baccatin III contents in the extracts were determined by a HPLC. The highest yields of taxol and baccatin III could be obtained by the supercritical extraction with 3wt% methanol and ethylacetate, respectively, as cosolvents. It was also found that the selectivity of taxol and baccatin III were 0.117 and 1.245wt%, respectively, with 0.7wt% ethylacetate, which demonstrated that the selectivity of taxol and baccatin III were increased about 1.8 and 19 times than those of conventional organic solvent extraction.
