The objective of this study was to reduce negative elements such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from fulvic acid using supercritical carbon dioxide ($SCO_2$) and to measure concentration and chromaticity of fulvic acid before and after treatment of $SCO_2$. Fulvic acid was treated at different experimental conditions; pressures of 100, 120 and 150 bar at $40^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. The composition of VOCs from fulvic acid was evaluated by GC-MS analysis, and the concentration was quantitatively analyzed using UV-spectrometer from fulvic acid at different experimental conditions. Also, the chromaticity of fulvic acid was evaluated using spectrophotometer. Though concentration and chromaticity of fulvic acid were not nearly changed, the VOCs from fulvic acid was remarkably decreased at 150 bar, $40^{\circ}C$ and 2 h. Reduction of VOCs through the $SCO_2$ is expected to contribute to quality improvement of fulvic acid.
In this study, poly (L-lactic acid) (PLLA) microparticles containing gemcitabine hydrochloride were prepared by a supercritical fluid process, called aerosol solvent extraction system (ASES), utilizing supercritical carbon dioxide as antisolvent. The influence of process parameters such as temperature, pressure, $CO_2$ and solution flow rate, solution concentration, and feed ratio of drug to polymer on the morphology and characteristics of the microparticles was studied in detail. The gemcitabine-loaded microparticles exhibited a spherical shape with a smooth surface. The entrapment efficiency of gemcitabine increased with increasing temperature, solution concentration and $CO_2$ flow rate and with decreasing drug/polymer feed ratio. The maximum drug loading obtained from the ASES process was found to be about 11%. The ASES-processed PLLA microparticles containing gemcitabine showed a relatively high initial burst due to the presence of surface pores on the microparticles and the poor affinity between drug and polymer.
In this paper, flow characteristics of an adiabatic capillary tube in a transcritical $CO_2$ have been investigated employing the homogeneous model. The model is based on fundamental equations of mass, energy and momentum which are solved simultaneously. Two friction factors(Churchill) and viscosity(McAdams) are comparatively used to investigate the flow characteristics. Supercritical and subcritical thermodynamic and transport properties of $CO_2$ are calculated employing EES property code. Flow characteristics analysis of $CO_2$ adiabatic capillary tube is presented to offer the basic design data for the operating parameters. The operating parameters considered in this study include inlet temperature and pressure of an adiabatic capillary tube, evaporating temperature and inner diameter tube. The main results were summarized as follows : inlet temperature and pressure of an adiabatic capillary tube, evaporating temperature, mass flowrate and inner diameter of $CO_2$ adiabatic capillary tube have an effect on length of an adiabatic capillary tube.
The synthesis behavior of nanoporous silica aerogel in the macroporous ceramic structure was observed using TEOS as a source material and glycerol as a DCCA(dry control chemical additive). Silica aerogel in the macroporous ceramic structure were synthesized through a sono-gel process. The wet gel in the macroporous ceramic structure were aged in ethanol for 72 h at $50^{\circ}C$. The aged wet gel was dried under supercritical drying condition. The addition of glycerol has a role of giving the uniform pore size distribution. The reproducibility of aerogel in the macroporous ceramic was improved in the glycerol(0.05 mol%) added to the silica sol and TEOS : $H_2O$=1 : 12.
Supercritical carbon dioxide ($SCO_2$) extraction was used to recover concentrated proteins and to remove lipids and odor causing compounds from anchovy. Engraulis japonicus $SCO_2$ was used as the solvent for extraction, which was performed in a semi-batch flow reactor. The experimental conditions used were pressure, 15-25 MPa; temperature, $40-60^{\circ}C$ and sample size, 500 ${\mu}m$. The proteins obtained under these conditions performed well in a sensory evaluation; moreover, effective lipids and odor removal was achieved. The stability and characteristics of the proteins recovered with different solvents were also evaluated. The samples were sterilized by processing with $SCO_2$. Escherichia coli was not detected after storage for several days. The sensory characteristics were found to be superior to those of a sample produced by hexane extraction. Thus, the protein concentrate was obtained at $60^{\circ}C$ and 25 MPa was deemed valuable as a foodstuff.
The dynamic performance analyses and tests for a 50kW turbo-generator (KIMM-TG50) were carried out. The operating concept of this machine is that it gets the initial driving force from the built-in motor-generator until it reaches its self-sustaining speed of 40,000 rpm, and then the driving mode is changed to self-operating mode by the combustor installed between the centrifugal compressor and the turbine. Due to winding mistake of motor-generator, the system could go only up to 22000 rpm by the motor so that high pressure air externally fed into the turbine was utilized to get the system to run up to 62,000 rpm thereafter. The vibration data collected during the tests revealed that the first bending critical speed is in near 5,600 rpm as predicted in the design stage of the rotor-bearing system, and that there were no other identifiable critical speeds up until 62,000 rpm due to high damping from the squeeze film damper-bearings supporting the rotor. This paper presented some of the experimental results along with dynamic performance predictions made in the design stage as a part of progress being made.
A novel self-humidifying composite membrane for the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) at low humidity condition was developed. The $Pt/TiO_2 catalyst particles were synthesized via supercritical impregnation methods. Pt precursor was dissolved in supercritical carbon dioxide and impregnated onto $TiO_2$ particles. Pt precursors were platinum(II) acetylacetonate, Dimethyl(1,5-cyclooctadiene) platinum(II) and we controlled the ratio of Pt to $TiO_2$ The impregnated Pt precursor was converted to $TiO_2$ supported Pt nanoparticle under various reducing conditions. $TiO_2$ catalyst particles were dispersed uniformly into the Nafion solution, and then $Pt/TiO_2/Nafion$composite membrane was prepared using solution-cast method. The size, dispersion and content of the platinum had been characterized with Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM), X-ray diffract ion (XRD) and Inductively Coupled Plasma - Atomic Emission Spectrometer (ICP-AES). The cell performance with the self-humidifying composite membrane was compared with a recast Nafion membrane under both humidified and dry conditions at 65 $^{\circ}C$.
The heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop during gas cooling process of carbon dioxide in a helically coiled tube were investigated experimentally. The experiments were conducted without oil in the refrigerant loop. The main components of the refrigerant loop are a receiver, a variable speed pump, a mass flowmeter, a pre-heater, a gas cooler(test section) and an isothermal tank. The test section is a double pipe type heat exchanger with refrigerant flowing in the inner tube and water flowing in the annulus. It was made of a copper tube with the inner diameter of 4.85 [mm], the outer diameter of 6.35 [mm] and length of 10000 [mm]. The refrigerant mass fluxes were 200${\sim}$600 [kg/$m^2$s] and the average pressure varied from 7.5 [MPa] to 10.0 [MPa]. The main results were summarized as follows: The heat transfer coefficient of supercritical $CO_2$ increases, as the cooling pressure of gas cooler decreases. And the heat transfer coefficient increases with the increase of the refrigerant mass flux. The pressure drop decreases in increase of the gas cooler pressure and increases with increase the refrigerant mass flux.
A study of high-pressure n-heptane droplet vaporization is conducted with emphasis placed on equilibrium at vapor-liquid interface. General frame of previous rigorous model[1] is retained but tailored for flash equilibrium calculation of vapor-liquid interfacial thermodynamics. The model is based on complete time-dependent conservation equations with a full account of variable properties and vapor-liquid interfacial thermodynamics. The influences of high-pressure phenomena, including ambient gas solubility, thermodynamic non-ideality, and property variation on the droplet evaporation are investigated. The governing equations and associated moving interfacial boundary conditions are solved numerically using a implicit scheme with the preconditioning method and the dual time integration technique. And a parametric study of entire droplet vaporization history as a function of ambient pressure, temperature has been conducted. Some computational results are compared with Sato's experimental data for the validation of calculations. For low ambient temperatures, the droplet lifetime first increases with pressures, then decreases for high pressures. For higher ambient temperatures, the droplet lifetime increase with less amplitude than that of low ambient temperatures, which then decreases with more amplitude than that of low temperatures. The solubility of nitrogen can not be neglected in the high pressure and it becomes higher as the pressure goes up.
