  • Micro power generators have been studying to provide high power that micro systems require. Micro power generators need micro combustor. Swiss-roll combustor has been studied about scale, geometry, material. From previous study experiments have shown that swiss-roll combustors require thin walls with low thermal conductivity for maximum performance at small scales. In this work, polyimide combustors with low thermal conductivity and thin thickness are built and tested.

  • The Performance of micro combustor in various condition was exploited experimentally. Various geometric conditions of combustor were considered to figure out the performance of micro combustor. The micro combustor studied in this study was constant volume with cylindrical shape. Geometric parameters of combustor were defined to be combustor height and diameter. The effect of height was exploited parametrically with the size of 1mm, 2mm and 3mm. The effect of diameter was observed parameterized with 7.5mm and 15mm. Three different combustibles or Stoichiometric mixture of methane/air, hydrogen/air were used. Pressure transition during combustion process was recorded. The maximum pressure by combustion responded favorably with the change of height of combustor and the initial pressure. The flame propagation was visulized using Schlieren method. The flame propagation within combustor was observed when specific conditions such as combustor height and initial pressure over critical value was satisfied.

  • A new microcombustor configuration for a micro fuel-cell reformer integrated with a micro evaporator was studied experimentally and computationally. The present microcombustor is simply cylindrical to be easily fabricated but two-staged, expending downstream, to feasibly control ignition and stable burning. Results show that the aspect ratio of the first stage and the wall thickness of the microcombustors substantially affect ignition and thermal characteristics. For the optimized design conditions, a premixed microflame was easily ignited in the expanded second stage combustor, moved into the smaller first stage combustor, and finally stabilized therein. The measured and predicted temperature distributions across the microcombustor walls indicated that heat generated in the microcombustor is well transferred. Thus, the present microcombustor configuration could be applied to the practical micro reformers integrated with a micro evaporator for use of fuel cells.

  • A full rig combustor test and altitude ignition test were carried out for radial-annular combustor of micro turbojet engine. 11.2% total pressure loss and 99.85% of combustion efficiency were measured at design point of engine under sea level standard condition and $2{\sim}6$ of air excess ratio for ignition envelope was achieved on engine starting regime. Finally, A 30,000 ft high altitude ignition test was also performed and finally we found out that the developed radial-annular combustor is appropriate to micro turbojet engine.

  • In this study, a set of performance tests on 3D-printed combustor components were carried out to investigate the performance of 3D-printed component and its feasibility for micro gas turbine engines. The test were conducted for four different equivalence ratios under two different engine operating conditions. The measurement results show that the tested combustor had a low total pressure loss coefficient and a uniform exit temperature distribution. However, the combustion efficiency values are less than 93.5% owing to the large amount of UHC and CO, which is considerably lower than a typical gas turbine engine combustor. The performance data obtained from the tests will be used for combustor performance improvements using 3D-printing technology.

  • A slinger combustor which can be applied to micro turbojet engine has been developed with the combustor rig test. A rotating fuel injector with high speed rpm was designed, manufactured and tested to apply into slinger combustor through spray test and adequate droplet size and spray distribution were achieved. The CFD was used to analyze internal flow of the combustor. We found out that the combustor shows 11.2% of pressure loss and 99.8% of combustion efficiency at full combustor rig test.

  • In this study, we performed a numerical study of hydrogen/air combustion in the combustion chamber of an ultra micro gas turbine. The supply flow rate and equivalence ratio are used as variables, and the commercial computational fluid dynamic program (STAR-CCM) is used for the numerical study of the combustion. The flow rate significantly affects the flame position, flame temperature, and pressure ratio between the inlet and the outlet. The flame position is close to the outlet in the combustion chamber, and the flame temperature and pressure ratio monotonously increases with the supply flow rate. The change in the equivalence ratio does not affect the flame position. The maximum flame temperature occurs under stoichiometric conditions.

  • In this study, a 2-W micro-gas turbine engine was designed using micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technology, and analytical and experimental investigations of its potential under actual combustion conditions were performed. An ultra-micro-gas turbine contains a turbo-charger, combustor, and generator. A compressor, turbine blade, and generator coil were manufactured using MEMS technology. The shaft was supported by a precision computer numerical control machined air bearing, and a permanent magnet was attached to the end of the shaft for generation. An analysis found that the cooling effect of the air bearing and compressor was sufficient to cover the combustor heat, which was verified in an actual experiment.

  • Internal Ballistic modeling and performance prediction for solid propellant micro thruster was performed with heat loss to the chamber wall as an important factor of miniaturization. Simple l-D end-burner type thruster and general HTPB-AP type composite propellant were selected for computation model. The results showed that the performance loss with the heat loss to the surroundings becomes larger as the surface-to-volume ratio is increased. In this case, the total impulse was reduced about 3% of the case in adiabatic condition.
