  • This study explores the effects of STEAM program using Arduino on preservice science teachers toward their STEAM core competencies. The STEAM program using Arduino consists of four stages: presentation of situation, creative design, emotional touch, and evaluation. The preservice science teachers learned the theoretical backgrounds of STEAM and Arduino. Then, they were given the chance to think about an environmental issue, which is fine dust. The preservice teachers designed an air cleaner and a fine dust measuring instrument using Arduino. The preservice science teachers also produced the air cleaner and the measuring instrument using Arduino. They measured the level of fine dust in the classroom before and after the use of the air cleaner. That is, the preservice teachers experienced each stage of STEAM: seriousness of fine dust, design and production of the measuring instrument of fine dust and air cleaner, and evaluation of the effectiveness of air cleaner. Further, they reflected on their experiences of STEAM program using Arduino. The results indicate that these preservice science teachers statistically improved communication competency, problem-solving competency, gathering information competency, logical analytical thinking competency, and creativity competency. However, there were no statistical improvements on teamwork competency and self-development competency. This study suggests that experiencing STEAM program using Arduino is valuable for the preservice science teachers to develop STEAM core competencies and further implement STEAM program their science classes in the future.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a project-based learning program utilizing Earth science data and to evaluate its effects on students' knowledge-information processing competency and communication and collaboration competency. To achieve this, the ADDIE instructional design model was employed to create the program, which was then implemented with 75 second-year middle school students. The program's effectiveness was assessed using paired sample t-tests on the results of tests measuring knowledge-information processing competency and communication and collaboration competency. Additionally, reflection journals were analyzed to identify students' interest in and difficulties with the program. The study's conclusions are as follows: first, the Earth science data-based project learning program comprises three themes: 'Journey through the Planets of the Solar System,' 'I am a Marine Expert,' and 'Planning a Tidal Flat Experience Program.' Second, following the program's implementation, there was a significant improvement in the overall students' knowledge-information processing competency. Third, the program also led to a significant enhancement in students' communication and collaboration competency. Based on these findings, the study suggests the need for specific and continuous teacher support to provide students with successful experiences through the program, overcoming challenges in program implementation through collaboration with the information subject, and conducting research that microscopically analyzes students' interactions.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate how a teaching approach influences student's ability of classification at the brain level. Twenty four healthy and right-handed college students participated in this study, which investigated a brain plasticity associated with category-generation and -understanding in classification learning. The participants were divided into one of two groups, one each for category-generation and -understanding learning programs, which were composed of twelve topics taught over a twelve-week period. To measure the change in student competence and brain activations, a paper and pencil test and an fMRI scanning session were administered before and after the training programs. Unlike the understanding group, the generation group showed significant changes in classification ability quotients and learning-related brain activations (cerebral cortex and basal ganglia were increased and prefrontal cortex and parahippocampal gyrus were decreased). Nevertheless, the understanding group showed an increased activation in the cerebral cortex and parahippocampal gyrus and a decreased activation in the right prefrontal cortex and cerebellum. Therefore, it can be concluded that teaching styles could influence students' brain activation patterns and classification ability. The results might also be used to develop a brain-compatible science education curriculum.

  • The mainstream tool for software education for elementary students is Educational Programming Language. It is essential for upper graders to advance from EPL to text based programming language. However, many students experience difficulty in adopting to this change since Python is run in English. Python is an actively used TPL. This study focuses on developing an education program to facilitate learning Python for Korean speaking students. We have extracted the necessary reserved words needed for data analysis in Python. Then we replaced the extracted words into Korean terms that could be understood in elementary level. The replaced terms were matched on one-to-one correspondence with reserved words used in Python. This devised program would assist students in experiencing data analysis with Python. We expect that this education program will be applied effectively as a basic resource to learn TPL.

  • There has been a lively discussion on improving Korean students' academic achievement and the imbalance in their recognition of the value of mathematics. In this context, there is a need for a program that enables the majority students who regards mathematics as a subject for the entrance examination to recognize the practicality and historicity of mathematics. Educational books on mathematics in everyday life or the history of mathematics are also expected to serve as an effective tool. In addition, Web 2.0 Map is another means of representing mathematics in everyday life and the history of mathematics in connection with the practical context. The active storytelling process in which mathematics in the practical context in mathematical educational books is represented in Web 2.0 Map is expected to help to understand in depth the practicality and historicity of mathematics. Nevertheless, mathematical educational books and Web 2.0 Map may lead to a considerable variety of outcomes and speeds if carrying out tasks depending on the student's competence and may have practical difficulties in being operated in class. These concerns, however, can be resolved through the creative activity programs adopted in conformance with the 2009 revised curriculum. Therefore, this study intends to develop a program for creating mathematical story maps through mathematical educational books and the Mashup of Web 2.0 Map in accordance with the process of developing activity programs. This study also intends to determine its effectiveness in enabling students to recognize the practical and historical values of mathematics.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop teaching materials for geological fieldwork around the area of Mai Mountain and to analyze the responses of elementary teachers as to the application of fieldwork. The site of geological fieldwork, Mai Mountain area, is located around the Maisan Provincial Park of Jinan-gun, Jeonbuk Province where a large-scale sedimentary succession in the era of Cretaceous is shown. It provides an easy access to distinct outcrops around the provincial park. The sequences reveal different kinds of sedimentary rocks and various sedimentary structures, and provide information of the lacustrine sedimentary environments of the Cretaceous. In addition, metamorphic rocks and structures formed at the margin of the basement and the basinal fault as well as a sedimentary sequence of the Quaternary formed in a modern fluvial stream are observable. A 4-step fieldwork procedure was applied to a group of 13 elementary teachers. Through questionnaire and interview, results showed that (a) the geological fieldwork and materials were effective to positively increase science teaching from the participating teachers, and that (b) there is a great need of the development of various fieldwork sites and teaching materials that promote active fieldwork for students to have their lived experience and knowledge gain. It is suggested that teacher education programs be able to provide active fieldwork for elementary inservice teachers to properly carry out a geological fieldwork for their students.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the elementary school student's recognition of informal science education program : 'Korea Junior Engineering Achievement (KJEA)'case. The subjects were 807, 4th, 5th, 6th grade elementary school students who participated KJEA program. We developed questionnaires and explored the students' preference and the reason to KJEA (compared with school science lesson), attitude on informal elements of KJEA (non-school teachers and non-curricular content), interest in the each KJEA program, outcome of the KJEA. The result of this study showed that the students' recognition of the informal science education program was strongly affirmative. Students preferred KJEA program to school science lessons for that reason why they could make and do by themselves and the KJEA program had novelty. They expected more teaming opportunities by non-school teachers on non-curricular content. Though KJEA had little effect on career interests, students showed willingness to continue to participate. We could get implication for informal science education that the quality of the program is the most important factors than others. The novelty and the doing by oneselves were also important factors for students.
