  • This study was done in order to evaluate the of effects on the blood lipid profiles, the body weight and body fat in 28 healthy female volunteers who had over 30% body fat by the long term intake of red ginseng product. Subjects were divided into four groups (placebo group n=7, red ginseng product group; n=7, exorcise group; n=7, exercise & red ginseng product group; n=7). Blood sampling and measuring of the body fat were taken by pre-treatment, 3 weeks, and after 12 weeks. Statistical techniques for data analysis were applied one-way ANOVA and repeated measures ANOVA. The 5% level of significance was used as the critical level for this study. In summary of results, total cholesterol, triglyceride and low density lipoproprotein cholesterol were reduced in three groups (red ginseng product group, p<0.001, exercise group, p<0.01 ; exercise & red ginseng product group, p<0.001) except placebo group. HDL-C was improved in three groups (red ginseng product group, p<0.05; exercise group, p<0.01; exercise & red ginseng product group, p<0.001) except placebo group. Body weight, percent body fat and body fat mass were reduced in three groups (red ginseng product group, p<0.01, exercise group, p<0.01 ; exercise & red ginseng product group, p<0.001) except placebo group. Finally, lean body mass was improved in three groups (red ginseng product group, p<0.05; exercise group, p<0.01; exercise & red ginseng product group, p<0.001) except placebo group.

  • Body fat reducing and physical-activity enhancing effects, along with artherosclerosis improving effects, of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) were elucidated on obese male middle school students with more than 30% body fat. Twenty-four volunteers were randomly divided into control (placebo, n=12) and CLA treatment (n=12) groups. Subjects were daily fed 6 g CLA (6 capsules, twice a day) or a placebo for 12 weeks. At the end of the experiment, body composition, blood lipid composition and exercise capacities of subjects were measured. CLA significantly reduced body fat content and body mass index (BMI) along with body weight, while the placebo did not have any such effects. Similarly, CLA significantly reduced low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol, total cholesterol, and triglyceride, but elevated high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol content in blood. Meanwhile, in terms of exercise capacity, there were significant enhancements of trunk flexion, closed-eyes foot balance, standing long jump, shuttle run, and sit-up activities in the CLA treatment group. These results indicate that CLA consumption reduced body fats, improved atherosclerosis factors in blood and improved physical activity of young male obese middle school students, and suggest that CLA could be a useful material for the heath care of obese young men.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted in order to investigate the effect of Sargassum confusum extracts on the reduction of body fat for eight weeks in overweight women ($BMI{\geq_-}23kg/m^2$). Methods: Subjects were classified by double-blind randomized trial as the control group (C group, n = 14) and the Sargassum confusum extract supplementation group (SC group, n = 16), which consumed 12 tablets per day. Questionnaires related to their health status were assessed twice (week 0 and week 8). Their dietary intake status was evaluated by 24-recall method and body compositions were measured using a bioelectrical impedance analyzer. In addition, we assessed the anti-obesity effect and the occurrence possibility of health risk factors during the supplementation periods by hematological and clinical analysis of blood. Results: Waist circumference and body fat (%) were significantly decreased in the SC group. Serum leptin level was also significantly decreased in the SC group. Defecation frequency was significantly increased in the SC group. The above results indicate that Sargassum confusum extract supplementation improves overweight on visceral fat and blood leptin level by increasing bowel movement. These results imply a decrease of health risk factors in overweight women. Seven subjects withdrew from the study due to adverse events; however, no differences regarding adverse events were observed between the control and treatment group. Conclusion: Therefore, Sargassum confusum extract is a plausible effective agent for body fat reduction in humans.

  • Body fat proportion is a major issue in health. The prevalence of obesity in childhood has been increasing on thesedays. A series of indirect estimates of body fat have been developed. There are hydrodensitometry, BIA and anthropometry equation for body fat. Hydrodensitometry has been regarded as a common criterion method. BIA made it possible to analyze body fat mass more related to hydrodensitometry than anthropometry. The purpose of this unvestigation were to compare body fat and other body composition between boys & girls and to know which anthropometry equation for body fat was most closely associated with BIA in boys & girls respectively. The subjects were 148 4th grade elementary school students(male:70, female:78). They underwent BIA(InBody 3.0, Biospace Korea)to determine body fat and other body composition. Anthropometric measurements were taken of height, weight, skinfolds and circumferences. The results obtained are summarized as follow: 1) Weight, BMI and Rohrer index were $39.9{\pm}7.2kg$, $20.5{\pm}8.0$, $138.2{\pm}17.0$ for boys and $35.9{\pm}6.7kg$, $18.2{\pm}2.6$, $96.6{\pm}13.6$ for girls. 2) Total body fat and percent body fat determined by BIA were $10.3{\pm}4.3kg$, $25.4{\pm}6.6%$ for the boys group and $9.3{\pm}3.8kg$, $25.1{\pm}6.0%$ for girls. 3) Mean triceps skinfold thickness was $20.5{\pm}6.1mm$ in boys, $17.0{\pm}5.1mm$ in girls and mean WHR was $0.88{\pm}0.4$ in bodys, $0.82{\pm}0.4$ in female and the values were significantly different by sex. 4) Correlational nanlyses showed that estimation of body fat by BIA measurement seemed to be closely associated with Rohere index(boys r=0.854, girls r=0.909). Kim's equation was highly correlated with the body fat in girls(r=0.910) but less correlated in boys(r=0.710). We need to develop specific anthropometric equations based on age and sex to determine body fat for children.

  • Age-dependent changes in body fat can often be observed in normal population. A series of indirect body fat estimates, such as hydrodensitometry, Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis(BIA), and anthropometry equation for body fat, have been developed. The BIA made it possible to analyze body fat mass more related to hydrodensitometry than anthropometry. This study is to compare the body composition analysis between bioelectrical impedance analysis(BIA) and anthropometric measurements of women. The subjects were a group of Daejeon residents including 32 young-aged women($21.50{\pm}1.44$), 30 middle-aged women($50.33{\pm}5.27$), and 40 old-aged women($69.22{\pm}5.74$). We used BIA(inbody 3.0, Biospace Korea) to determine body fat and other body composition. We also measured weight, height, circumference for 12 parts, and skinfold thickness for 9 parts of all subjects' body. The results are as follows: The subjects' height by the age group were $161.74{\pm}0.94cm$ in the young-aged women, $154.16{\pm}1.09cm$ in the middle-aged, and $148.60{\pm}0.78cm$ in the old-aged respectively. BMI were, in order, $21.68{\pm}0.49,\;22.87{\pm}0.89,\;and\;23.85{\pm}0.55$. Relative body fat determined by BIA was, also in order, $29.06{\pm}0.92%,\;26.35{\pm}1.02%,and\;29.35{\pm}1.07%$. Circumference and skinfold that showed the highest correlation with body fat by BIA was waist in the young-aged(r=0.738) and bast in the middle- and old-aged(r=0.844, r=0.804), and triceps in the young-and old-aged(r=0.538, r=0.798), and subcostal in the middle-aged(r=0.872). Body fat Estimations by BIA were the highest correlation with Caucasian women's equation(r=0.588) in young-aged women, Siri's equation with Durnin & Womesley's body density measurement(r=0.875) in middle aged women and Caucasian women' equation(r=0.872) in old aged women. We need to develop specific anthropometric equations based on sex and age to determine body fat.

  • This study was about the relation of 129 differently stressed male college students's on or off-line contact behavior to out-eating places. We researched the subjects's obesity degree such as body fat percentage, body mass index, stress condition, and contact behavior to out-eating places. Subjects's average age was 20, height 174.9cm. More stress they felt, heavier their body weight was and more obese. 37.1% of Strongly stressed group, 28.8% of medium and 25% of normal stressed group felt severe depression. As the result of pearson correlation, stress condition was positively related with body weight, obese degree, body mass index(BMI) and exercise time. Body weight was positively related with obeses degree, BMI, and the amount of smoking and drinks. Strongly stressed group used more internet to search the information about out-eating places, they had more experience to search the homepage of out-eating places than other groups significantly. Strongly stressed group cared more about the sanity of out-eating places where they ate. and they were interested in various experiences than other groups. Strongly stressed group felt the tasty was the most important satisfying factor significantly and visited the out-eating place that satisfied them again than other groups.

  • Recent cross-sectional studies indicate that obesity is a risk factor for periodontal disease. This study was aimed to investigate whether the four-week weight control program including caloric restriction and exercise training could have an effect on periodontal health. Forty-one obese (body mass index [BMI] ${\geq}25.0$) and five overweight ($23.0{\leq}BMI<25.0$) students participated in the weight control program. Anthropometric data and oral examination data were collected at the baseline and at the 27th day. BMI, waist hip ratio (WHR), and percent of body fat (PBF) of the subjects decreased significantly, but gingival index, sites with bleeding on probing (BOP), and sites with shallow pocket depth didn't show the significant changes in paired t-test. There was no difference in the outcomes according to smoking, drinking alcohol, and sex. Nevertheless, PBF and sites with BOP (r=0.777) and WHR and sites with shallow pocket depth (r=0.444) showed positive correlations. PBF accounted for 58.9% of the variance in sites of BOP in regression analysis. We suggested that obesity might relate with periodontal health, although it was not clear whether weight control could influence on periodontal health directly.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine resting metabolic rate (RMR) and thyroid hormonal (TSH, $T_3$, and $T_4$) changes following weight loss by diet with regular exercise in obese women. The subjects of the present study were 7 women who were above 30% body fat. The subjects arrived into the laboratory in the morning after 12 hour overnight fasting. All subjects measured RMR, % body fat, and fat free mass at weight loss program start time, after 4 weeks and after 8 weeks. All the RMR values were expressed as absolute value (kcal/day), absolute value/FFM (kcal/day/FFM), and absolute value/BSA (kcal/$m^2$/hr), and were calculated predicted RMR value minus actual RMR value. Also, correlation of blood thyroid hormonal (TSH, $T_3$, and $T_4$) secretion and RMR were analyzed. There were significant differences in weight, % body fat, and BSA following diet with exercise (p<0.05). Also, there was a difference between predicted RMR and actual RMR value following weight loss (p<0.05). We also examined the hormonal changes according to weight loss. After weight loss, the level of TSH and $T_4$ were higher than before. But there were no significant differences. Also, the level of $T_3$ was lower than rather before but there was no significant difference. Among the anthropometric factors, FFM was highly correlated (r=0.761) with actual RMR value before weight loss. Also, there was a correlation (r=0.771) with actual RMR value after weight loss. Therefore, actual RMR expressed as FFM increased in weight loss program by diet with exercise. There were no changes in the level of thyroid hormonal TSH and $T_4$.

  • This study examined the serum lipid levels according to the obesity indices, and obtained the relationship between obesity indices and serum lipid levels among adults who underwent a health checkup in a university hospital. The subjects for this study were 4,112 adults aged 18 to 77 years who underwent medical examinations at the health center of a university hospital in Daejeon city from Jan 2012 to Dec 2013. The serum lipid levels (TC, HDL-C, LDL-C, TG, AI) and obesity indices (height, weight, waist circumference, body fat rate, BMI, WHR WSR) of the study subjects were surveyed from self-recorded questionnaires and medical examination charts of the hospital. As a result, the serum lipid levels (TC, HDL-C, LDL-C, TG, AI) of the study subjects were increased significantly with higher level of obesity indices (WC, body fat rate, BMI, WHR WSR) in both sexes. The TC, LDL-C, TG, and AI showed that positive correlated with the WC, body fat rate, BMI, and WSR in both sexes, but HDL-C was negatively correlated with the WC, body fat rate, BMI, and WSR in both sexes. The above results suggest that the obesity indices and the serum lipid levels are closely related, i.e., the serum lipid levels increase with increasing obesity indices.
