The physiological aspects of tobacco seeds from seeding to germination under light and dark condition, and different temperature were studied to obtain basic information on the production of good seedlings. There were distinct three phases in moisture uptake and respiration process during germination that classifiable into 'Imbibition', 'Lag', and 'Growth' phase under light condition but such growth phase were not observed in the dark germination. Great changes of sugar and fatty acid content of tobacco seeds were observed during germination in light condition but such changes were slight in dark germinated seeds and fatty acid content of seeds during germination were decreased as corresponding to increasing in respiration.

A amphipod, Leptocheirus plumulosus was exposed to Ag contaminated sediments to evaluate relative importance of various uptake routes (sediment, porewater, supplementary food) for Ag bioaccumulation in sediment-dwelling marine invertebrates. Additionally, influence of AVS (acid-volatile sulfide) on the partitioning of Ag to porewater and on the Ag bioavailability was determined to evaluate the utility of AVS criteria for the management of metal contaminated sediment. The experimental sediments were spiked with 4 levels of Ag (0.1-3.3 ${\mu}$mol Ag/g) and AVS concentrations were manipulated to 40 or <0.5 ${\mu}$mol/g, then equilibrated for >2 months to allow pore water/particulate distributions similar to nature. A L. plumulosus was incubated in the contaminated sediments with overlying water for 35d. During the exposure, the amphipods was fed with supplementary food ($TetraMin^{(R)}$) with or without Ag contamination. Following exposure, tissue Ag in L. plumulosus was strongly correlated with the weak acid extractable Ag in sediments ($r^{2}$=0.87, p<0.001). The ratio of AVS to Ag-SEM (Ag extracted simulaneouls with AVS) had a strong influence on porewater Ag concentration, consistent with previous studies. However, Ag bioaccumulation in L. plumulosus was not influenced by AVS concentrations. The amphipods fed Ag contaminated food took up ${\sim}$ 1.8 X Ag accumulated by the amphipods fed uncontaminated supplementary diet. The result suggests that the benthic invertebrates exposed to metal contaminated sediments would accumulate metals largely via ingestion of contaminated sediments and food, with minor contribution from dissolved sources of porewater and overlying water.
Casein is considered to be the main source of protein in milk; therefore, many studies have been conducted to identify casein-derived bioactive peptides and their physiological effects. Casein is inactive within the parent protein but can be liberated by various proteases and enzymatic hydrolysis during microbial fermentation and gastrointestinal digestion. Once absorbed, casein exhibits different bioavailabilities in the body. Specifically, casein-derived peptides function as angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor in the cardiovascular system; thus, they are expected to reduce and prevent hypertension. Additionally, casein-derived peptides behave as opioid-like peptides in the nervous system, which impacts relaxation. These peptides are also expected to modulate various aspects of immune functions. Finally, caseinophosphopeptide (CPP) and glycomacropeptide (GMP) may exhibit a number of nutritional effects such as the absorption of calcium, iron or zinc. Many studies have been conducted to evaluate casein-derived peptides due to their multifunctional properties and the results of these studies have contributed to the development of a wide variety of functional dairy products. The purpose of this paper was to review the generation of bioactive peptides, their absorption and metabolism, and their specific bioactive effects.
The absorption and fluorescence spectroscopic studies on the interaction between thionine (TH) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) have been carried out. The absorption and fluorescence spectral changes of TH with the changes of concentration of SDS are interpreted in terms of i) the aggregation of TH-SDS complex, ii) the stacking process of dye molecules by the association of the TH-SDS complex, iii) breakdown of the stacking due to the formation of dye-rich induced micelles, iv) redistribution of dye molecules in the surface of SDS micelles.
The purpose of this study was loused on understanding of uptake of nutrients by plants, the behaviors of nutrients in soil and the possibility of leaching loss when N fertilizer (urea) and mature compost were applied. Lysimeters (volume 0.15㎥, diameter 62cm, height 62.8cm) were installed for collecting leachate in the Jeju volcanic ash soils. Lysimeter study consisted of thirteen treatments: fellow, fellow with weeding, cropping without fertilizer and compost, three N fertilizer soil surface applications (16, 32, and 64 kg/10a), three N fertilizer and compost soil surface applications (16+800i 32+1600, and 64+3200 kg/10a), two water dissolved N fertilizer applications(16 and 32 kg/10a), and low and high plant densities. The growth of corn (preceding crop) and potatoes (succeeding crop) and leaching loss were determined during the experimental period. The amount of leachate from lysimeter was remarkably greater at bare conditions than at cropping conditions for corn and potatoes. The N content of plants (corn and potatoes) tended to increase as fertilizer rate increased. Fertilization of urea dissolved in water to soil was more efficient than surface fertilization for the growth, yield, and the N uptake N of corn and potatoes. There were no differences in dry matter yield of plants between medium and high N rates, but N, Ca, K and Mg concentrations of plants were higher at higher N rates. There were significant correlations between N uptake and each of Ca, K and Mg uptakes in corn and potatoes. Total N uptake by plants increased with increased N fertilizer and compost applications. Plane absorbed 54.9% of applied N at low N rate and 31.0 to 34.0% at high N rates. The proportion of N leaching losses was lower at low N rate and high plant density.
Medical Internal Radiation Dose(MIRD) schema was developed for calculating the absorbed dose from the administered radiopharmaceuticals. With the biological distribution data and the physical properties of the radionuclide we can estimate the absorbed dose by the MIRD schema. For the thyroid cancer patients received $^{131}I$ therapy, the absorbed dose to the bone marrow is the limiting factor to the administered dose, and the duration of admission is deter-mined by the retained activity in the whole body. To monitor the whole body radioactivity, we used Eberline Smart 200 system using ionization chamber as a detector. With the time activity curve of the whole body, total body residence time was obtained. From the ICRP publication 53, the residence times of the source organs, such as kidney, urinary bladder content and stomach, were used to calculate the absorbed doses of the target organs, such as stomach, red marrow, bladder wall and remaineder total body. In 8 thyroid cancer patients with 175 mci of $^{131}I$ administered orally, the mean absorbed dose in the bladder wall was 375.1, in the stomach 285.1, red marrow 25.4 and total body 22.4 rad respectively. For the monitoring of the large administered activity, this method seemed to be quite useful.
Ginseng saponin absorbed in rat blood and liver were analyzed by High Performance Liquid Chromatography. The amount of saponin was estimated from peak area of the corresponding fraction and the specific radioactivity was then calculated, The radioactivity of the methanol-water extract of blood serum and livers of ginseng saponin administered rats decreased rapidly during the first four hours after the saponin administration. However, the radioactivity disappearance rate was relatively slow when the radioactivity was below a certain level. It seemed that the glycosides of panax ginseng were absorbed partly in the undissociated form and the saponin level of the liver might be maintained at 10-6% - 10-5% for a considerable period of time in ginseng administered rats.

The main purpose of this study was to select a B. schmidtii population which has high cadmium tolerance and remediation and to determine the difference of cadmium uptake patterns among populations. One-year-old B. schmidtii seedlings were treated with 0, 0.4, 0.8mM CdSO$_4$. 3/8H$_2$O for two months. Cadmium concentrations in different positions of stem and cadmium concentrations and contents of leaves, stems and roots were analyzed. Also soil cadmium concentrations were analyzed. B. schmidtii was highest in root and lowest in shoot tip, showing a gradual decrease from root to shoot tip. The shoot to root Cd concentration ratios were over 1.26. It is concluded that B. schmidtii has good potential for phytoextraction as a shoot accumulator, which can be used for remediation of cadmium-contaminated areas. But tolerance differs between populations. Therefore B. schmidtii should be used as a means of phytoremediation after selection for Cd tolerance is performed.
A Pot experiment was conducted to study the uptake of $Sr^{90}$ by rice plants in five different types of paddy soils and its distribution in these plants as a function of the age of the rice. The uptake of $Sr^{90}$ by rice plants increased with the growth of the aboveground mass of the plants from the planting period, but $Sr^{90}$ content per unit of dry matter decreased as the organic mass of the plants increased during the vegetative growing period, except for the time of ripening. The content of Ca and $Sr^{90}$ in rice plants was higher in the stem and leaves than in grain parts in general. However, Ca content was decreased in the stem and increased in the grain part with the growth of the rice plant ; but $Sr^{90}$ content was increased in the leaves and decreased in the stem and grain parts.
