This study aimed to investigate the voice onset time (VOT) of plosives in the VCV syllables by the place of articulation and phonation type spoken by children with bilateral cochlear implants (CIs) in comparison with children with typical hearing (TH). In all, 15 children with bilateral CIs and 15 children with TH participated in this study, aged between 5 to 10 years. All children produced 9 VCV syllables and their VOT were analyzed by the Praat software. There was no significant difference in mean VOT between children with bilateral CIs and children with TH. However, there was a significant difference in mean VOT by the place of articulation, such that the VOT for velars were longer than those for bilabials and alveolars. Additionally, there was a significant difference in mean VOT by the phonation type, such that the VOT of aspirated consonants were longer than those of lenis and fortis consonants. The results of this study suggest that children with bilateral CIs can distinguish the acoustic properties of plosive consonants and control the speech timing between the structures of the larynx and the oral cavity at a similar level as children with TH.

This study was carried out to compare the rotation between vestibular function and balance skills in normal and hearing-impaired children. The subjects were 20 normal children (8-10 years) and 20 bearing-impaired children (8-10 years). The SCPNT was used to assess vestibular function, then, one leg stance test was used to compare static balance skill of normal and hearing-impaired children according to existence of visual input and sex. The results were as follows: 1. In SCPNT, normal md hearing-impaired children showed statistical significance in all left-sided and right-sided rotations(p<.01), and the vestibular function responses of hearing-impaired children wore normal $20\%$, abnormal $45\%$, absent $35\%$. 2. To compare balance skills between normal and hearing-impaired according to eye open and eye close, one-leg stance Oat showed statistical significance in eye open(p<.05), but did not show statistical significance in eye close(p>.05). 3. SCPNT, ene-leg stance test did not show statistical significance according to sex(p>.05).
This study was analyzed to change of /i/ formant follow cochlear implantation periods for hearing impaired children with cochlear implantation. 20 hearing impaired children participated and acoustic analysis of /i/ was used CSL(Computerized Speech Lab; Model 4300b) annually. The data was captured the first formant, $2^{nd}$ & 3th formant frequency of /i/ and was analyzed using ANOVA. Multiple range test to investigate difference between group was treat with LSD and Duncan. The results of /i/ formant analysis for hearing impaired children with cochlear implantation, each formant at a year keeping with cochlear implantation was located at high frequency. In accordance with CI periods, the each formant decreased significantly, especially between a year and $2^{nd}$ year taking with cochlear implantation.
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of whole language approach on the development of language abilities and story structure concepts for hearing impaired children. For this end, two research questions have been established. First, what is the effect of whole language program using story books on hearing impaired children’s language abilities? Second, what is the effect of whole language program using story books on hearing impaired children's story structure concept? Three subjects participated in the study. Each subject was scheduled for a 40-minute session two times a week. Subjects received 36 sessions of use animation activities for 3 months. The study used a multiple baseline across the subjects. The followings were the findings of this study. First, the whole language program using story books improved hearing impaired children's language abilities. Second, the whole language program using story books improved hearing impaired children's story structure concept.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate speech production ability of congenitally deaf children with cochlear implant. Forty children were participated in the study. The results are following: (1) mean of speech intelligibility score was 3.05 in 5 point scale, (2) mean of percent of correct vowels was 86.19%, and mean of percent of correct consonants was 74.89%, and (3) voice profiles showed their voice were high pitched, hypernasal, and breathy. But 12.5% of the children were evaluated as having normal voice quality. Overall speech production abilities of children with cochlear implant were superior than the deaf children's result reported in literatures. Meanwhile their abilities were not same as children with normal hearing.
The purpose of this study was to investigate correlation of auditory development and language development of children with hearing impairment Eighteen subjects with severe or profound hearing loss participated in this study. They were 22-to 55-month-olds who had hearing parents with no additional disabling conditions. The test material was the Meaningful Auditory Integration Scale (MAIS) and MacArthur Communicative Development Inventory-Korea (MCDI-K). A Pearson Correlation Coefficient was determined through a statistical analysis. The results followed as; firstly there was a strong correlation between auditory development and receptive language development. Secondly, there was a strong correlation between receptive language development and expressive language development. Finally, there was a strong correlation between auditory development and education onset time. Therefore, auditory training is important method for auditory rehabilitation and education onset time is important variation for auditory development.
This paper analyzes the vocal tract area estimation algorithm used as a part of a speech analysis program to help deaf children correct their pronunciations by comparing their vocal tract shape with normal children's. Assuming that a vocal tract is a concatenation of cylinder tubes with a different cross section, we compute the relative vocal tract area of each tube using the reflection coefficients obtained from linear predictive coding. Then, we obtain the absolute vocal tract area by computing the height of lip opening with a formula modified for children's speech. Using the speech data for five Korean vowels (/a/, /e/, /i/, /o/, and /u/), we investigate the effects of the sampling frequency, frame size, and model order on the estimated vocal tract shape. We compare the vocal tract shapes obtained from deaf and normal children's speech.
In this paper, we designed and implemented edutainment platform that can be effectively applied to developmental disabilities for their education and treatment of sensibility and intelligence training. We developed embedded hardware and contents authoring tool to make multimedia contents operated on the hardware, a management tool to provide result of training, and a real-time monitoring tool for observing the state of study. The hardware is designed by considering the characteristics of developmental disabilities and provides visual, auditory and tactile sense to assist sensibility training for their attention. User-friendly and easy-to-use authoring tool enable teachers and non-specialist to make educational contents. Also the real-time monitoring tool make us to observe user's status even in the outside of classroom. The management tool stores result of training and make us to review the result for further steps. Using this edutainment platform, efficient repetitive training is possible without restriction of time and location. Also when it applied to practical education, we can recognize that our system is effective on improving the ability of attention and studying.
This study was performed to understand the depression of children with hearing impairment with relation to their mothers' nurturing attitude and sign language level. The subjects were 131 hearing impaired children aged from 9 to 16 years and their mothers, who had no hearing impairments. The children's depression was assessed by CDI(Kovacs 1983) adapted by Cho and Lee(1990), and the maternal attitude was measured through the instrument developed by Oh and Lee(1982) and revised by Lim(1987). The results were as follows. First, the girls' depression was higher than the boys', and children in a dormitory type of school showed higher depression than those in a general type of school. Second, children's depression did not show differences according to mother-child communication methods but differed according to mothers' sign language level. Children whose mothers had high level of sign language showed the highest depression and those whose mothers had beginning level of sign language showed the lowest depression. And mothers' affective, goal- achieving and rational attitude were negatively related with children's depression. Third, the depression of hearing impairment children was influenced mainly by the maternal affective attitude, and the next order was the type of school the children attend.
This study investigates the differences in mean F0, intensity, jitter, and shimmer across hearing aid, gender, and vowels. For this study, 18 hearing-impaired children, 18 cochlear implanted children, and 18 normal hearing children as a control group were asked to read seven Korean vowels (/$\alpha$, $\wedge$, o, u, w, i, $\varepsilon$/). Subjects' readings were recorded by NasalView and analyzed by Praat. Results showed that the means of F0 were significantly higher in the hearing impaired group than in the normal hearing group; in the female group than in the male group; and in high vowels than in low vowels. Second, intensity was significantly higher in the hearing impaired group than in the normal hearing group; in the female group than in the male group; and in low vowels than in high vowels. Third, jitter was significantly higher in the normal hearing group than in the hearing impaired group; in the female group than in the male group; and in back vowels than in front vowels. Finally, shimmer was significantly higher in the CI group than in the normal hearing group or the hearing aided group; in the male group than in the female group; and in low vowels than in high vowels.
