  • The railway is an important industry which quickly and safely transports a great deal of people and goods compared to other methods of transportation. Because there is not enough manpower in this field, professional engineers are urgently demanded. Although there are many people who apply for the Korea railway signaling professional engineer examination, they do not know how and what to prepare for it. This Paper analyzes the pattern of questions in the examination for the last fifteen years and the trend of the examination. The subjects which have been taught in railway related educational institutions for the last five years are also analyzed. This paper suggests some essential subjects that should be studied in order to show an easy way to obtain the certificate to those who prepare for the examination.

  • The Korean High Speed Electric Multiple Unit (HEMU) train system is soon being applicable to practical use. This new technology is expected not only to reshape the domestic market but also to be exported to overseas markets for high-speed train system. This study aims to prospect demands on the HEMU train technology and to formulate marketing strategies using a text-mining technique, therefore, providing a foundation for successful commercialization of the HEMU train system.

  • The railroad that represents modern industry began appearing in 1899. However, after the steam locomotive that provided water stopped the service, the water towers within the railroad station were useless. Suggestions presented in this study for activating the environment around the water towers that are designated as the cultural properties results are as followed: 1) The place where people can experience the vestiges of Korean War and the region that different novels accommodated. 2) A plaza 3) A facility for exhibition of industry inheritance and local products 4) A local landmark 5) Reproduction of the historical steam locomotive and water tower Local residents should participate in the activation process. And the designer should consider the environmental context. In addition, the activation of water towers should be designed under an urban plan.

  • This study measures the investment effects of railroad industries on Korean economics, using the table of industry relation analysis. Until now, few studies have analyzed the economic effects of railroad in Korea so that this study can have a big implication for transportation policies in making decisions on its investment level as top priority. This study finds that railroad investment effects are larger than those of road on the national economics and, thus, impling that the expansion of railroad investment is required to grow continuously national economics as well as a major modal of transportation networks.

  • According to the ISO 14040(1997), Life Cycle Assessment is not the tool only focusing on the emissions from the manufacturing processes of a product, but the tool also expressing environmental adverse impact quantitatively through products entire life cycle (i.e. raw material acquisition, manufacturing, transportation, use, and end-of-life stage). Because the LCA for EMUs(Electrical Multiple Units), however, requires astronomical time and cost for collecting big amount of data. it is inevitable to bring in the simplified LCA methodology, In this study, we introduced standardized methodology of LCA in the world, and found appropriate S-LCA methodology for EMUs. Furthermore, we recommended how to evaluate the environmental impact of EMUs in detail and precisely, using the S-LCA.

  • Life cycle assessment(LCA) has been developed from the concept of life cycle thinking. Life cycle thinking implies that everyone in the whole chain of a product's life cycle, from cradle to grave, has a responsibility and a role to play, taking into account all the relevant external effects. LCA is an analytical tool for identifying environmental loads and assessing the environmental impact in the whole chain of a product's life cycle. In Europe and Japan, LCA and ecodesign study for railway industry have been actively carried out recently. However, LCA for railway industry in domestic is still infant. LCA is standardized in International Organization of Standardization(ISO), base on the ISO 14040 standards, 307 life cycle inventory(LCI) database for infrastructure and base materials have been established in total since 1999. Some of LCI database can use in performing LCA for trains and railway infrastructure, but still not enough to derive accurate LCA result. Therefore, railway oriented LCA methodology and LCI DB are needed to be developed.

  • Trans-Siberian Railway (TSR) has been recently rising to the surface as the world important issue with Trans-Korea Railway (TKR). This can change transportation means from sea to railway and enhance Korean international position through the North-east Asian economic cooperaton with Russia. In particular, when 'Iron Silkroad' linking TKR is created, it can revitalize the underdeveloped East Russia and Far East's economies and Korean railway can play a key role as the North-east Asian logistics center and exerts a powerful influence on them. In addition, Korean railway expects to obtain economic benefits accruing to various value-added businesses such as IT, tourism, especially, transportation business from the East Siberia, the world largest reserves of energy to Korea. This study tries to find economic value analysis and guidelines on strategies of Korean railway with international logistics base built in Khassan (Vladivostok contiguity region) through the development of energy deposited around east of TSR.

  • Railway system which has latent loss of lives and property by big accident with that human error such as locomotive driver, manager, signaller, and the others involved. So human error management is needed to control this complex system and to confirm safety of it. Rail human error research for managing human resource has grown rapidly in both quantity and quality of output over the past few years. The continual influences of safety concerns, new technical system opportunities, reorganization of the business, needs to increase effective, reliable and safe use of capacity, and increased society, media and government interest have now accelerated rail human factors research programmes in several countries. The objective of this research is to improve safety and to reduce accidents in korean railway system, through the application of research results to the investigation of requirement for human error.
