  • For the purpose of improvement of the load carrying capacity and constructibility of the conventional steel-concrete composite girder through a effective appliance of the construction materials and optimization of the girder section, a new type section of composite girder and RC shear connection were proposed. In this study shear strength of the RC shear connection is estimated, and the characteristics of shear load-slip behaviour is analyzed. Push-out tests on shear specimens and FEM analysis with various design parameters are carried out, and results are analyzed. The results of test and FEM analysis showed that shear strength of RC shear connection is underestimated by the design provisions of the current design code. By regression analysis a empirical equation for the estimation of shear strength of RC shear connection is proposed.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the seismic behavior of precast concrete segmental bridge piers with shear resistance connecting structure. A model of precast concrete segmental bridge columns with shear resistance connecting structure was tested under a constant axial load and a cyclically reversed horizontal load. A computer program, RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. The proposed numerical method for the seismic behavior of precast concrete segmental bridge piers with shear resistance connecting structure is verified by comparison with reliable experimental results.

  • Coupled shear walls are effective lateral force resisting system in which coupling beams link individual walls. For improving the energy dissipation capacity of coupling beams, diagonal reinforcement details were developed. However, it is difficult to construct diagonal reinforced coupling beams due to the congestion of reinforcement in the beam. For resolving the problem, this study developed precast coupling beams with bundled diagonal reinforcement. To reduce the reinforcement congestion, bundled diagonal reinforcement were placed in the coupling beam. To evaluate the cyclic performance of coupling beams with bundled diagonal reinforcement, experimental test were conducted. For this purpose, two slender specimens with an aspect ratio of 3.5 were made and tested. It was observed that the cyclic performance of the coupling beam with bundled diagonal reinforcement was similar with that of the coupling beam with normal diagonal reinforcement placed according to design code to ACI 318-11.

  • Lately outmoded and functionally obsolete buildings constructed in 1960s and 1970s are often remodelled and restored. Even though there are not serious structural defects in the existing buildings, many old buildings have been reconstructed to improve residence quality or to extend residence area of the buildings. The experimental or theoretical research on plane expansion of RC apartments is quite scare. In this research, 12 specimens and 19 RC slabs connected by hinged joints were tested. The new slab was connected to the existing slab by hinge joints injecting dowel bars between two slabs. Main parameters of the slabs are types of the dowel bars (D13 and D19), spacing of the dowel bars (150mm, 300mm, and 450mm), and the locations of the steel bars in the existing slabs. The test results indicated that the shear strength of the RC test slabs having various types of dowel bars was about twice that calculated by the ACI 318-02 code. All slabs failed in concrete spatting and the dowel steel bars did not reach their yield strengths.

  • This paper presents the results of push-out test conducted for the perfobond rib shear connectors welded onto steel-concrete composite deck. Push-out test specimen consists of profiled steel sheeting, perfobond rib, reinforcement, and concrete. To provide longitudinal shear resistance between the profiled sheeting and the concrete, perfobond rib with a number of holes was used. The parameters considered in the design of perfobond rib were the spacing and location of holes, and effect of reinforcing bars placed in the holes. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed system, twelve specimens were fabricated and tested. Although the scope of test was limited in nature, the results of test have shown that the perfobond ribs can be effectively used for shear connection in the steel-concrete composite decks.

  • This paper deals with the shear capacity of corrugated rib as the shear connector in composite structures. Corrugated rib is modified as perfobond rib shear connector type to evaluate the shear capacity. A total 12 push-out specimens with stud, perfobond rib, and corrugated rib connector were fabricated. Then, the influences of hole-crossing bars, concrete dowel, depth of corrugated panel and height of rib on the shear capacity were evaluated experimentally. As the results of these tests, the failure mechanisms of corrugated rib and perfobond rib specimens were associated with the bearing failure of the concrete slabs, but the failure of weld zone did not occur. The shear capacity of corrugated rib specimens improved as high to 96% compared to the perfobond rib shear connectors. Also, the hole-crossing bars were effective on the improvement of concrete dowel action, and consequently, shear capacity increased by 48%. It was also proven that the increment of the depth of corrugated panel and the height of rib increased the concrete bearing resistance, therefore increasing the shear capacity.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the performance of precast concrete segmental bridge columns with shear resistance connecting structure. The system can reduce work at a construction site and makes construction periods shorter. An bonded or unbonded tendon element based on the finite element method, that can represent the interaction between tendon and concrete of prestressed concrete member, is used. A joint element is newly modified to predict the inelastic behaviors of segmental joints. The proposed numerical method gives a realistic prediction of performance throughout the loading cycles for several test specimens investigated.

  • In this study, an experimental study was conducted to analyze the hysteresis behavior according to the steel fiber aspect ratio and volume fraction of diagonally reinforced concrete coupling beams under to cyclic loading. The aspect ratio and volume fraction of the steel fibers were set as the main variables, and 4 specimens were fabricated in which the amount of transverse reinforcement of the coupling beam suggested in the domestic building structural standard was relaxed by about 53%. In the experiment, cyclic loading experiments were performed in the displacement control method in accordance with ACI 374.2R-13, and as a result of the experiment, it was found that all specimens containing steel fibers exceeded the nominal shear strength suggested by the current structural standards. As the aspect ratio of the steel fibers increased, the steel fibers prevented the buckling of the diagonal reinforcement, and the bridging effect of the steel fibers held the crack surface of the concrete. The shear strength, stiffness reduction and energy dissipation capacity of the specimens containing steel fibers were superior to those of the Vf0 specimens without steel fibers. Therefore, it is judged that the steel fiber reinforced concrete can relieve the details of the transverse reinforced.

  • Coupled shear walls can provide an efficient structural system to resist lateral force. However, the reinforcement detail for diagonally reinforced coupling beams required by ACI-318 often causes the difficulties in construction due to the reinforcement congestion and interference among reinforcement. This paper is to evaluate cyclic behavior of High-Performance Fiber-Reinforced Cement Composite (HPFRCC) coupling beams having reduced transverse reinforcement around the beam perimeter. Experimental test was conducted using three specimens having a beam aspect ratio 2.0. Test results showed that HPFRCC coupling beams with half of transverse reinforcement required by ACI-318 provided similar energy dissipation capacities compared with the coupling beams having reinforcement satisfy the requirement of ACI-318.

  • The purpose of this study is to critically evaluate the structural performance of an innovative new shear resistance connecting structure of precast member. Joints such as shear resistance connecting structure require special attention when designing and constructing precast segmental structures. An experimental and analytical study was conducted to quantify performance measures and examine one aspect of detailing for developed shear resistance connecting structure. A computer program, named RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. A joint element is used to predict the inelastic behavior of the joints between segmental members. Future work by the authors will do a model test of precast segmental prestressed concrete bridge columns with this shear resistance connecting structure, and examined both the structural behavior and seismic performance.
