Accuracy of seismic response evaluated by a capacity spectrum method (CSM) is generally known to be less than that by Incremental dynamic analysis (IDA). In this paper, a procedure for IDA based seismic fragility curves for steel moment resisting frames was suggested. This study compares seismic fragility curves using the suggested method (IDA method) with those using a CSM and intends to verify the validity of the IDA method. The shapes of both seismic fragility curves are similar in slight and moderate damage states. However, in the case of extensive and complete damage states, the fragility curves obtained from the IDA method presents a more steep slope due to less variation (or uncertainties). This is due to the fact that the IDA method can properly capture the structural response beyond yielding rather than the CSM.

This study develops an approximate procedure for incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) using modal pushover analysis (MPA) with empirical equations of the inelastic displacement ratio ($C_R$) and the collapse strength ratio ($R_C$). By using this procedure, it is not required to conduct linear or nonlinear response history analyses of multi- or single- degree of freedom (MDF) systems. Thus, IDA curves can be effortlessly obtained. For verification of the proposed procedure, the 6-, 9- and 20-story steel moment frames are tested under an ensemble of 44 ground motions. The results show that the MPA-based IDA with empirical equations of $C_R$ and $R_C$ produced accurate IDA curves of the MDF systems. The computing time is almost negligible compared to the exact IDA using repeated nonlinear response history analysis (RHA) of a structure and the original MPA-based IDA using repeated nonlinear RHA of modal SDF systems.

This study investigates the dynamic instability of strength-limited bilinear single degree of freedom (SDF) systems under seismic excitation. The strength-limited bilinear hysteretic model best replicates the hysteretic behavior of the steel moment resisting frames. To estimate the dynamic instability of SDF systems, the collapse strength ratio is used, which is the yield-strength reduction factor when collapse occurs. Statistical studies are carried out to estimate median collapse strength ratios and those dispersions of strength-limited bilinear SDF systems with given natural periods, hardening stiffness ratios, post-capping stiffness ratios, ductility and damping ratios ranging from 2 to 20% subjected to 240 earthquake ground motions recorded on stiff soil sites. Equations to calculate median and standard deviation of collapse strength ratios in strength-limited bilinear SDF systems are obtained through nonlinear regression analysis. By using the proposed equations, this study estimated the probabilistic distribution of collapse strength ratios, and compared this with the exact values from which the accuracy of the proposed equations was verified.
A new steel connection method using wedges known as Self-Locking Connector has been developed. In this study, experimental investigation was conducted to verify the seismic performance of steel beam-to-column joints with Self-Locking Connectors. Cyclic-loading tests were performed on two beam-to-column joints with Self-Locking Connectors. The two beam-to-column joint specimens were of the cantilever-type and had the same details. Test results showed that beam-to-column joints with Self-Locking Connectors were able to developa total rotation capacity of 0.06 radian, which is greater than the 0.04 radian required for Special Moment Frames. Moreover, their energy absorption capacity was much greater than that of conventional joints.
This paper summarized the results of a full-scale cyclic seismic testing on four reduced beam section (RBS) steel moment connections. Specifically, these tests addressed a bolted web versus a welded web connection and strong versus medium panel zone (PZ) strength as key test variables. Specimens with medium PZ strength were designed to promote balanced energy dissipation from both PZ and RBS regions, in order to reduce the requirement for expensive doubler plates. Both strong and medium PZ specimens with welded web connection were able to provide sufficient connection rotation capacity required of special moment-resisting frames. On the other hand, specimens with bolted web connection performed poorly due to premature brittle fracture of the beam flange at the weld access hole. Unlike the case of web-welded specimens, specimens with cheaper bolted web connection could not transfer the actual plastic moment of the original (or unreduced) beam section to the column. No fracture occurred within the beam groove welds of any connection in this testing program. If fracture within the beam flange groove weld is avoided by using quality welding procedure as in this study, the fracture issue tends to move into the beam flange base metal at the weld access hole. Supporting analytical study was also conducted in order to understand the observed base metal fracture from the engineering mechanics perspective.

Allowable stress design method have been most widely used in steel structure in Korea. Recently, not only high-rise buildings but also medium or low-rise buildings were designed as steel structure. Most of low-rise steel buildings are designed as ordinary moment resisting frames(MRF). But MRFs don't have any lateral force resisting devices such as bracing in braced frames. This study focuses mainly on nonlinear seismic response analyses of small scale steel frames which will be used later as specimens for the evaluation of MRF's seismic performances. The main parameters of analyses are arrangement of column axis, $P-{\Delta}$ effect, acceleration factor etc. The object of this paper is to estimate the seismic performances of MRFs, which are mostly designed in Korea, through the results of response analyses.

In this study, a story-wise distribution of hysteretic energy in steel moment resisting framse(MRF), buckling restrained braced frames(BRBF), and hinge-connected framed structures with buckling restrained braces(HBRBF) subjected to various earthquake ground excitations was investigated. Sixty earthquake ground motions recorded in different soil conditions were used to compute the energy demand in model structure. According to analysis results, the hysteretic energy in MRF and BRBF turned out to be the maximum at the base and monotonically diminishes with increasing height. However the story-wise distribution of hysteretic energy in HBRBF was relatively uniform over the height of the structure. In this case damage is not concentrated in a single story, and therefore it is considered to be more desirable than other systems. The story-wise energy distribution pattern under three different soil types turned out to be approximately the same.
In this research, the influence of additional vertical deformation of floating pontoon when dead load of each story is loaded during construction was investigated. The analysis procedure is presented for considering the influence of the additional deformation to calculate the additional moment of super-frame. Following the procedure, an example building with 3 storied steel frame was analyzed. Analysis method that taking no account for deformation of pontoon to the modeling was underestimated by ignoring design load following deformation of vertical load. By operating the load at the same time, design load under the influence of large deflection of model which whole modeling of floating structure was overestimated. So analysis method of floating structure considering the construction sequences demonstrated the suitable method.

A test program was conducted on seismic-resistant steel moment connections constructed using Reduced Beam Sections with beam web openings. In the connection, in order to enhance ductility capacity under severe cyclic loads, a portion of the beam web near the beam-to-column connection is cut out instead of the beam flange as in dogbone connections. A total of 4 large scale specimens were tested in this program. The specimens were all made using $H-458{\times}417{\times}30{\times}50$ sections for the columns and $H-792{\times}300{\times}14{\times}22$ sections for the beams. Test specimens showed excellent performance similar to that of dogbone connections.
In steel moment frames constructed of H-shapes, strong-axis moment connections should be used for maximum structural efficiency if possible. And most of cyclic seismic testing, domestic and international, has been conducted for strong-axis moment connections and cyclic test data for weak-axis connections is quite limited. However, when perpendicular moment frames meet, weak-axis moment connections are also needed at the intersecting locations. Especially, both strong- and weak-axis moment connections have been frequently used in domestic practice. In this study, cyclic seismic performance of RBS (reduced beam section) weak-axis welded moment connections was experimentally investigated. Test specimens, designed according to the procedure proposed by Gilton and Uang (2002), performed well and developed an excellent plastic rotation capacity of 0.03 rad or higher, although a simplified sizing procedure for attaching the beam web to the shear plate in the form of C-shaped fillet weld was used. The test results of this study showed that the sharp corner of C-shaped fillet weld tends to be the origin of crack propagation due to stress concentration there and needs to be trimmed for the better weld shape. Different from strong-axis moment connections, due to the presence of weld access hole, a kind of CJP butt joint is formed between the beam flange and the horizontal continuity plate in weak-axis moment connections. When weld access hole is large, this butt joint can experience cyclic local buckling and subsequent low cycle fatigue fracture as observed in this testing program. Thus the size of web access hole at the butt joint should be minimized if possible. The recommended seismic detailing such as stickout, trimming, and thicker continuity plate for construction tolerance should be followed for design and fabrication of weak-axis welded moment connections.
