Virtual Celestial Learning System Based on Virtual Reality Technology (가상현실기술에 기반한 가상천체학습시스템)

  • This paper describes the development of an effective celestial learning system using virtual reality technology. Our system support a deep immersion and comfortable navigation by using HMD(Head Mounted Display) and 3 dimensional mouse. We make three dimensional celestial image dynamically with OpenGL and display the rendered image to HMD. Students can feel that they are on the space ship and navigate through the celestial body. During the navigation, students can get the information of each planet and solve given problems. Our system shows that virtual reality can be used as an effective tool for training and education.

The Effects of RSM-Based Astronomical Observation Program on Astronomical Spatial Concept and Self-Directed Learning for the Scientific Gifted Students (과학영재 학생을 위한 RSM 기반 천체관측 프로그램이 천문학적 공간개념과 자기주도적 학습능력에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to find the effects of RSM-based astronomical observation program about Astronomical Spatial Concept and Self-Directed Learning for the Scientific Gifted Students. For this purpose, this research developed RSM-based astronomical observation program. This program was totally consisted 10 lessen. there was 3 part in this program. It contained Preparation Stage (step 1-2), Observation Stage (step 3-8), Clean up Stage (step 9-10). To find the effects of RSM-based astronomical observation program on Astronomical Spatial Concept and Self-Directed Learning for Scientific Gifted Students. 20 participants was selected. these students were attended at a scientific gifted class(5th grade) of an elementary school located in Ulsan. First, Astronomical Spatial Concept was used to find the effect of the Astronomical Observation program based RSM. And the results were analyzed by SPSSWIN 18.0. The results of this study were as follows. First, RSM-based astronomical observation program was a positive effects on Astronomical Spatial Concept of the Scientific Gifted Students (t=3,875, p=.001). Second, RSM-based astronomical observation program was a positive effects on Self-Directed Learning of the Scientific Gifted Students (t=5.783, p=.000). According to this research, RSM-based astronomical observation program was verified to improve Astronomical Spatial Concept and Self-Directed Learning on the Scientific Gifted Students. It will be contribute on the curriculum construction of the gifted school or gifted class.

Effects of the Planetarium Lesson on Students' Understanding of Astronomical Concepts (천체투영관 수업이 학생들의 천문 개념 이해에 미치는 효과)

  • Astronomy is the subject that can easily draw students' interest in studying science, therefore plays an important role in developing scientific core competence. However, it is difficult to develop spatial thinking that is required in understanding astronomical concepts through the classroom lessons. Planetarium, along with the science museum, is one of the most representative informal educational institution where astronomical concepts can be taught beyond time and space constraints. In this study, we developed the astronomy education program that is operated in the planetarium and applied the program to the elementary, middle and high-school students to investigate the effects of the planetarium lesson compared to the classroom lesson. The duration of this research was about 8 months, and the number of the students involved is 761, including participants of the 1 night and 2 days camps in the Daegu National Science Museum. The newly developed planetarium lesson is comparable to the previous classroom lesson of which topics are cardinal points, constellation, and the rotation of the earth. Test items were developed to evaluate the understanding of the astronomical concepts. The study was conducted based on the pre- and post-test with non-equivalent groups design comparing classroom and planetarium lessons. The results of this study are as follows. First, planetarium lesson is more effective for understanding astronomical concepts such as the cardinal points, earth's rotation, and the constellation than classroom lesson. Second, planetarium has a positive effect irrespective of gender and previous knowledge. Third, planetarium for high school students has the same effect as additional observation activities followed by the classroom instruction. Therefore, planetarium can be used as an alternative, effective tool when night observation is not available. In summary, planetarium is an effective tool that helps students to understand the astronomical concepts.

ALGORITHMS FOR MOVING OBJECT DETECTION: YSTAR-NEOPAT SURVEY PROGRAM (이동천체 후보 검출을 위한 알고리즘 개발: YSTAR-NEOPAT 탐사프로그램)

  • We developed and compared two automatic algorithms for moving object detections in the YSTAR-NEOPAT sky survey program. One method, called starlist comparison method, is to identify moving object candidates by comparing the photometry data tables from successive images. Another method, called image subtraction method, is to identify the candidates by subtracting one image from another which isolates sources moving against background stars. The efficiency and accuracy of these algorithms have been tested using actual survey data from the YSTAR-NEOPAT telescope system. For the detected candidates, we performed eyeball inspection of animated images to confirm validity of asteroid detections. Main conclusions include followings. First, the optical distortion in the YSTAR-NEOPAT wide-field images can be properly corrected by comparison with USNO-B1.0 catalog and the astrometric accuracy can be preserved at around 1.5 arcsec. Secondly, image subtraction provides more robust and accurate detection of moving objects. For two different thresholds of 2.0 and $4.0\sigma$, image subtraction method uncovered 34 and 12 candidates and most of them are confirmed to be real. Starlist comparison method detected many more candidates, 60 and 6 for each threshold level, but nearly half of them turned out to be false detections.

소백산 천체관측소 준공

  • 우리나라 천체관측연구에 새로운 터전이 될 국립천문대 소백산천제측소 준공식이 9월 29일 충북 단양군 대강면 천동리 소백산 제2 연화봉 현장에서 관계인사 180여명이 참석한 가운데 거행되었다. 소백산 천체관측소 심경진 소장의 건설경위보고로 시작된 이날 준공식은 민경기 국립천문 대장의 식사와 최형섭 과학기술처 장관의 축사(박상혁과기처과학기술심의실장 대독), 유공자표창순으로 진행되었다. 이어서 첨성관 개관테이프 절단식이 있은후 참가자들은 우주의 신비를 풀 관측기기등 관측시설을 둘러 보았다.

GT0236+610의 궤도에 따른 밝기 변화 연구

  • GT0236+618은 고중력 천체와 B0형별이 짝을 이루는 근접 쌍성계이다. 약 한 달을 주기로 공전함에 따라 그 밝기가 변하는데, 일반적으로는 두 별의 근일점 근처에서 많이 밝아지지만, 그 변화는 아주 규칙적이지는 않다. 예상외로 갑자기 더 많이 밝아지는 때가 각각 다른 이유는 잘 알려져 있지 않다. 고중력 천체의 정체도 동정되지 않은 상태이다. 가시광선 및 적외선을 이용한 GT0236+618의 최근 관측 연구를 소개하고자 한다.

1ES2030+407의 적외선 파장 연구

  • 고중력 천체들의 광폭발 현상은 보통 적어도 수년에서 수십 년을 단위로 발생하는 것이 일반적이며, 한 번의 광폭발은 길게는 1-2년을 지속한다. 1ES2030+407는 이러한 전형적인 고중력 천체들의 광폭발과는 매우 다르게, 연간 길고 짧은 다양한 시간척도로 수차례의 광폭발 현상들이 일어나기도 한다. 1ES2030+407의 적외선 관측은 세계적으로도 비교적 아주 최근에 시작되어 아직도 관측 자료가 많은 편이 아니다. 보현산 1.8미터에 장착된 적외선 카메라를 써서 최근에 수행한 관측을 소개한다.

Autonomous Landing on Small Bodies based on Discrete Sliding Mode Control (이산 슬라이딩 모드 제어를 이용한 소천체 자율 착륙 기법)

  • This paper presents a robust method for autonomously landing on small bodies. Autonomous landing is accomplished by generating and following reference position and attitude profiles. The position and attitude tracking controllers are based on discrete sliding mode control, which explicitly treats the discrete and impulsive natures of thruster operation. Vision-based inertial navigation is used for autonomous navigation for landing. Numerical simulation is carried out to evaluate the performance of the proposed method in a realistic situation with environmental uncertainties.

천체화상처리용 그래픽 라이브러리

  • 고수준의 천체화상처리에 관련된 모든 작업을 개인용 컴퓨터로도 충분히 수행할 수 있도록 제작된 화상처리용 그래픽라이브러리와 그 응용프로그램을 소개한다. 본 프로그램은 손쉽게 작업할 수 있는 대화식 한글 GUI 환경을 사용자에게 제공하여 다양하게 선택 가능한 작업메뉴로부터 천체화상처리를 비롯한 천문계산 및 도형출력등의 여러가지 응용프로그램을 실행시키도록 개발되었다. 그 주된 내용은 마우스에 의해 조작할 수 있는 통합처리환경의 제작. 양질의 천체화상 획득과 정밀측광을 위한 화상처리 그리고 출력장치에 구애받지 않는 화상출력의 구현이라 할 수 있다. 본 프로그램의 작성에는 C와 포트란언어가 사용되었으며 하드웨어에 관계없이 자유로운 한글처리를 위해 소프트웨어 자체에 한글을 내장하는 방법을 선택하였다.

국립과천과학관 천문시설 운영 경험과 향후 전망

  • 2008년 11월에 개관한 국립과천과학관은 매년 약 150만 명의 관람객이 방문하고 있으며, 천체투영관과 천체관측소에도 매년 20만 명 이상이 방문하고 있어 지금까지 방문한 총 누적 인원은 100만 명이 넘는다. 그리고 그동안 국립과천과학관에서는 일식, 월식, 유성우와 같은 특별한 천문현상 관측행사, 국제천체투영관영화제, 천체투영관 음악회와 과학 토크콘서트, 천문학 교실 등 다양한 천문 행사와 교육프로그램이 진행되어 천문학 대중화의 대표적인 기관으로 자리 잡았다. 하지만 점점 높아지고 있는 관람객들의 눈높이와 요구수준을 맞추기 위해서는 더욱 창의적이고 새로운 행사와 교육프로그램을 개발하여야 한다. 이것은 현재 천문시설을 운영하고 있거나 앞으로 운영할 계획인 다른 기관들도 모두 공통적으로 직면하고 있는 현실일 것이다. 이번 발표에서는 그동안의 국립과천과학관 천문시설의 운영 경험을 공유하고 향후 발전 방향을 함께 논의하는 기회를 가져보고자 한다.
