  • In the design of scramjet intake for hypersonic flight, a variety of aerothermodynamics phenomena are encountered. These phenomena include blunt leading - edge effects, boundary layer development issues, transition, inviscid / viscous coupling, shock - shock interactions, shock / boundary - layer interactions, and flow profile effects. For intakes that are designed to operate within a narrow Mach number / altitude envelope, an understanding of a few of these phenomena might be required. In this work several predominant flowfield phenomena (viscous phenomena, boundary - layer separation, and combustor entrance profile) are discussed to investigate the performance of the intake at the altitude and angle of attack extremes of the HyShot flight experiment.

  • This experimental study concerns the characteristics of a transitional flow in a concentric annulus with a diameter ratio of 0.52, whose outer cylinder is stationary and inner one rotating. The pressure losses and skin-friction coefficients have been measured for the fully developed flow of $0.1\sim0.4%$ aqueous solution of sodium carbomethyl cellulose (CMC), respectively at inner cylinder rotational speed of $0\sim600rpm$. The transitional flow has been examined by the measurement of pressure losses to reveal the relation of the Reynolds and Rossby numbers with the skin-friction coefficients. The present results show that the skin-friction coefficients have the significant relation with the Rossby numbers, only for laminar regime. The occurrence of transition has been checked by the gradient changes of pressure losses and skin-friction coefficients with respect to the Reynolds numbers. The increasing rate of skin-friction coefficients due to the rotation in uniform for laminar flow regime, whereas it is suddenly reduced for transitional flow regime and, then, is gradually declined for turbulent flow regime. Consequently, the critical(axial-flow) Reynolds number decrease as the rotational speed increases. Thus, the rotation of inner cylinder promotes the early occurrence of transition due to the onset of taylor vortices.

  • The existing flow regime map on mixed convection in vertical cylinders was investigated through an analysis of original literatures and its re-formation. The original literatures related to the existing map were reviewed. Using the investigated data and heat transfer correlations, the map was redrawn independently, and compared with the existing map. The redrawn map showed that mixed convection regime was not curved lines but straight lines and the transition regime was unable to be reproduced. Unlike the existing map with a little data, there are lots of data in the redrawn map. The reviews revealed that the existing map used the data selectively among the experimental and theoretical results, and a detailed description for lines forming mixed convection and transition regime was not provided. While considerable studies on mixed convection have been performed since that of Metais and Eckert, the existing map has still been used as the best method to distinguish natural, forced and mixed convection regime.

  • This paper considered the structural mechanism of transitional boundary layer by the experimental approach. In order to measure the turbulence quantity in the boundary layer, we made a wind tunnel with 400${\times}$190${\times}$2500 mm test section and a flat plate with well fabricated leading edge. Hot wire anemometer was used for acquiring the continuous turbulence signal which is processed by special software. The results of experiment show that the region where turbulence spot is dominant moves from near wall to overall layer and thus the anisotropy of velocity fluctuation shows so large value. Also the turbulence energy originally contained in low frequency band comes up to the high frequency band. Finally the turbulence model needs minimum two length scales to consider the pre-transition region.

  • This study aims to analyze the spatial context by analyzing the flow characteristics of the walking tour course and visualizing effectively using the floating population data constructed through the communication data. The floating population data refinement algorithm was developed for estimation flow population along the road and the floating population data for each walking tour courses was constructed. In order to adopt the algorithm for forming suitable for the analysis of the walking tour courses, the estimation of floating population considering the area of the road and the estimation of floating population considering the value of floating population around the road were compared. As a result, the estimation of floating population considering ambient the values of flow population was adopted, which is more appropriate to apply analysis method due to the relatively consistent data. Then, a datamining algorithm for walking tour course was constructed according to the characteristics of the floating population data, the absence of missing values. Finally, this study analyzed the flow characteristics and spatial patterns of 18 walking trails in Seoul through the floating population data according to walking tour course. To do this, the kernel density analysis and the Getis-Ord $G^*_i$ statistical hotspot analysis were applied to visualize the main characteristics of each walking tour course.

  • On the basis of Nikuradse laboratory experiments conducted in circular pipe with uniform roughness, five flow regimes are defined with respect to the characteristics of boundary layer such as laminar, transition laminar, smooth turbulent, transition turbulent and rough turbulent flows. Two cases are found for the transition laminar flow: one for the transition between laminar flow and smooth turbulent flow and the other for the one between laminar flow and rough turbulent flow. They all can be clearly determined by the relative roughness or the ratio of pipe diameter to the roughness. Explicit functions are developed for the estimation of pipe friction factor for the various flow conditions including turbulent flow regimes, which have excellent agreement with the Nikuradse laboratory data.

  • Thermal and structural finite element analyses were performed for the turbopump turbine bladed disk model with shroud of a liquid rocket engine. The only 1/80 part model was analyzed which consists of 3D eight node isoparametric solid elements. The applied loading history consists of a startup condition with a thermal spike and a steady state. Heat transfer coefficient on the blade was predicted using the commercial Navier-Stokes solver, Fluent. Transient thermal responses during startup and steady states were calculated using a 3D finite element code developed. Maximum stress and shroud tip displacement under the influence of centrifugal and thermal loading were also determined.

  • A modified $textsc{k}$-$\varepsilon$model is proposed for calculation of transitional boundary-layer flows with changing pressure gradient. In order to develop the model for this problem, the flow is divided into three regions; pre-transition region, transition region and fully turbulent region. The effect of pressure gradient is taken into account in stream-wise intermittency factor, which bridges the eddy-viscosity models in the pre-transition region and the fully turbulent region. From intermittency data in various flows, Narashima's intermittency function, F(${\gamma}$), has been found to be proportional to $\chi$$^{n}$ according to the extent of pressure gradient. Three empirical correlations of intermittency factor being analyzed, the best one was chosen to calculate three benchmark cases of bypass transition flows with different free-stream turbulence intensity under arbitrary pressure gradient. It was found that the variations of skin friction and shape factor as well as the profiles of mean velocity in the transition region were very satisfactorily predicted.
