Natural products and natural product structures play a general and highly significant role in drug discovery and development process because it has various merits and potentials for new drug source that have extensive clinical experience, development time contraction, excellent stability and safety. In several neurological disorders, neuronal death and excessive activation of microglia (neuro-inflammation) are observed. A number of drug discovery-related neuronal cell death and neuro-inflammation was studied from natural products, respectively. However, until now, it has not been possible to study dual-protection molecules recorded in the Natural Product library. In the present study, using the natural product-derived library of the Institute for Korea Traditional Medical Industry, we investigated dual-protective molecules against glutamate (a classical excitatory neurotransmitter)-induced oxidative stress mediated neuronal cell death and LPS-induced excessive activated microglial cells (immune cells of the brain). Chrysophanol, extracted from Rheum palmatum, had dual-protective effects against both glutamate-induced neuronal cell death and LPS-induced NO production, triggering proinflammatory cytokines and microglia activation and resulting in neuroinflammation. Flow-cytometry analysis revealed that chrysophanol had a scavenger effect, scavenging glutamate- and LPS-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by neuronal and microglial cells, respectively. Based on the present study, chrysophanol may have an important protective role against neuronal cell death and neuroinflammation in the brain. The results may be helpful for studying drug development candidates for treating central nervous system disorders.
The antioxidant potentials of ten kinds of medicinal plants used as natural dyeing agents were tested. Among the plant extracts and floral waters that were examined in this study, the antioxidant activities of the DPPH and ABTS radical scavengers increased with increasing amounts of the extracts. The hot-water extracts from Aphis chinensis, Caesalpinia sappan L., Rumex crispus L., and Areca catechu effectively inhibited the DPPH and ABTS radicals at concentration below 0.1 mg/mL. The floral water obtained through steam distillation from Areca catechu, Rubia akane Nakai, Coptis chinensis, and Phellodendron amurense showed relatively valid antioxidant activities. In particular, the natural colorants extracted from Rumex crispus L., Areca catechu, and Aphis chinensis effectively suppressed the photogenerated singlet oxygen induced by a photosensitizer in in-vitro assay systems. The concentrations ($IC_{50}$) of the hot-water Aphis chinensis extract required to exert a 50% reduction effect on DPPH, ABTS, and singlet oxygen were found to be 8.5, 8.0, and $210{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. The study results suggest that extracts derived from naturally occurring colorants as well as floral waters could be used as natural antioxidants in the food and health-care industries.
The aim of the study was to examine the cosmetic and biological activity of Lagerstroemia indica L. and it is possible that can be used as a cosmetic ingredient for application of cosmetic industries. Lagerstroemia indica L. branch was extracted with 70% acetone in water. In the result of DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl) scavenging radical activity, acetone extract of Lagerstroemia indica L. branch were higher than 73% at the 50 ppm concentration. ABTS radical cation decolorization activity by acetone extract were higher than 78% at the 50 ppm. Both examine of DPPH and ABTS showed high antioxidative activities at the 50 ppm. In the result of nitrite scavenging ability, acetone extract were higher than 63% at the 50 ppm. Collagenase inhibition activity by extract were higher than 85% at the 50 ppm. Extract is showed high collagenase inhibition more than comparison group EGCG at all concentration. These results suggest that Lagerstroemia indica L. has a great potential as a cosmeceutical raw material as well as anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory and collagenase inhibition activity.

In this study, we investigated the levels of the natural preservatives, benzoic acid, sorbic acid, and propionic acid, in raw unprocessed vegetables. Quantitative analysis of benzoic acid and sorbic acid was performed using high-performance liquid chromatography with a diode array detector (HPLC-DAD) and confirmed using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Propionic acid was analyzed using a gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC-FID) and confirmed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). From a total of 497 samples, benzoic acid, sorbic acid, and propionic acid were found in 50 (10%), 8 (0.2%), and 61 samples (12.3%), respectively. The highest quantity of benzoic acid, sorbic acid, and propionic acid was found in peony root (1,057 mg/kg), nut-bearing torreya seeds (27.3 mg/kg), and myrrha (175 mg/kg), respectively. The background concentration range of naturally occurring preservatives in raw vegetables determined in this study could be used as standard inspection criteria to address consumer complaints and trade disputes.
In this study, Zea mays L., which were discarded after harvesting in Korea, were collected and used for experiment. The Zea mays L. were dried in the shade and ground before being extracted using two solvents. Subsequently, DPPH, ABTS, the total flavonoid content and the total polyphenol content were measured to analyze antioxidant activity. The diameter of clear zone was measured by using the paper disc diffusion method. The results showed that the ethanol extract had a slightly higher antioxidant and antibacterial activity. The total polyphenol content was measured using gallic acid as standard, and CE(ethanol extract) was found to contain $31.2{\pm}5.2mg\;GAE/g$ of polyphenols, indicating a considerably high activity. When DPPH radical scavenging ability was measured, CE was found to have $4.6{\pm}0.9%$, $6.4{\pm}0.5%$, $22.9{\pm}0.6%$ and $83.2{\pm}0.2%$ at different concentrations of $1{\mu}g/mL$, $10{\mu}g/mL$, $100{\mu}g/mL$, and $1,000{\mu}g/mL$, respectively, with a dependent tendency at the concentration of $1,000{\mu}g/mL$ and a considerably high activity at the concentration of $1,000{\mu}g/mL$. This study is expected to be used as preliminary data to develop new natural antioxidant, antibacteria raw materials, as only little research has been undertaken on Zea mays L., which are mostly discarded after harvesting, while many studies have been so far conducted on corn and corn silks.
Mineral carbonation has been proposed as a possible way for $CO_2$ sequestration. The electric arc furnace slags consist of calcium, magnesium and aluminum silicates in various combinations. If they could be used instead of natural mineral silicates for carbonation, considerable energy savings and $CO_2$ emissions reductions could be achieved. Indirect aqueous carbonation of the slags consists of two steps, extraction of calcium and carbonation. Acetic acid leaching of electric arc furnace slags had been already studied to extract Ca in them, but it was reported that the carbonation of the extracted $Ca^{2+}$ in the leached solution would suffer from too slow kinetics, even at high pressure of $CO_2$. In this work, to develop more efficient extraction of the electric arc furnace slags, hydrochloric acid leaching to separate calcium from them was studied, and the results were compared with the acetic acid ones. The phase boundary between $Ca^{2+}$ and $CaCO_3$ in the solution with pH was determined by thermodynamic calculations. Hydrochloric acid was more effective than acetic acid for the extraction of Ca in electric arc furnace slag, and there is a possibility to recycle an unreacted hydrochloric acid in the leached solution by electrolysis or evaporation.
65 samples of glass bead excavated from Mahan tombs of Asan Bakjimeure site consists of 13 of potash glass group and 52 of soda glass group and soda glass is superior in numbers. When classified according to color, purple blue glass bead is accompanied potash and soda glass group whereas purple glass bead is potash glass group and red, greenish blue, green and gold foil glass bead is soda glass group. Purple blue glass bead is classified as LCA type in which the content of the stabilizer is low. Of this, the soda glass categorized as LMK type with low content of MgO and $K_2O$ is determined that natron is used as the raw material. As to red glass, the homogeneous glass is LCA-B/HMK type and the heterogeneous glass is HCLA/LMK type. Thus, each of these two types are likely to be used plant ash and natron respectively. Greenish blue and green glass depends of the type that round glass is LCA-A/LMHK type and the segmented glass is LCA-B/HMK type. The gold foil glass bead is manufactured by the purity of 19.9~22.6K gold foil and the soda glass of HCLA/LMK type. In other words, the most of the glass bead of Asan Bakjimeure site is similar to the composition of the glass confirmed in other sites of the Baekche period. On the other hand, the greenish blue and green segmented bead and some red round bead is a different chemical composition is considered that the difference in raw materials. These characteristics is expected to be an important evidence for the understanding of the trade system of the ancient glass.

We investigated new ingredients with real efficacy in both in vitro and in vivo all together. Especially we focused on the real improving effort in the clinical experiments. Because most products containing effective materials evaluated in vitro failed to show a real improving effect in the human with acne. We evaluated the well-known ingredients in a small scale clinical experiment with half-finished goods containing each ingredient. Among these products, product formulating SeleMix AN composed with germinating soy bean and magnolias bark extract remarkably improved acne and acne scar. Moreover skin redness caused by severe acne was improved. There was statistical significance between placebo and sample. Two hundred volunteers participated in our pilot study with written informed consent. After then we performed in vitro efficacy test this ingredient. SeleMix AN inhibited the growth of propionibacterium acnes at a concentration of 0.0125% and suppressed histamine release by 16.9%. Moreover human fibroblast cell activity was increased by 57% compared to control. Lastly, we performed a clinical study. Consisting of groups of 23 volunteers. Although the period of the test was in summer accelerating sebum secretion and recurring a high tate of acne, inflammation lesions were especially improved after applying product containing SeleMix AN for 4 weeks.

This study was performed to develop new cosmeceutical agents with sebosuppressive activity from native plant extracts in Korea. Inhibitory efforts of the extracts on $5{\alpha}-reductase$ (5-AR) were evaluated by enzyme kinetics analysis using UV-spectrophotometric method. Two kinds of enzyme suspensions as 5-AR sources were prepared from rat liver tissue and cultured hSG cells. The sebosuppressive effects were determined by measuring the total lipid quantity produced in cultured hSG cells after incubation with the extracts. As a result, Pinus thunbergii extracts showed the most potent 5-AR inhibitory effects. Its $K_i$ values were 0.0002% and 0.0014% for rat liver 5-AR and human sebaceous gland 5-AR, respectively. Addition of Pinus thunberii extract to hSG cells showed 48% reduction in total lipid production at 0.005% concentration. In conclusion, Pinus thunbergii extracts can be used as a cosmeceutical agent to regulate sebum production and to alleviate the sebum-involved skin diseases, such as acne and seborrheic dermatitis.
