Trend and Subject in Welding Technique of LNG Aboceground Storage Tank (지상식 LNG 탱크의 용접기술 현황과 향후 동향)

  • 천연가스는 지구상에서 비교적 광범위하게 생산되며 구미 등에서는 대부분 pipe line으로 소비지까지 운송하여 사용하고 있지만 일본 등에서는 액화 천연가스 (LNG)로 저장, 수송하여 사용하고 있다. LNG 저장탱크는 생산측의 액화기지와 사용측 의 수입기지에 설치되며 지금까지 약 240기가 건설되어 있다. 종래 탱크 1기의 용량 은 대부분 6 - 8만m$^{3}$ 규모였지만, 토지의 유효이용 등으로 대형화되고 있으며, 또 지상식에서는 PC(Prestressed Concrete)의 방파제를 외부탱크에 근접시켜 외부탱크 와 일체화시킨 PC LNG 탱크가 개발.설계되었다. 일본에서는 이미 이 방식으로 세계 최대규모인 14만m$^{3}$ 탱크가 건조되어 가동 중이다. LNG의 주성분은 메탄이고 비등점은 -161.5.deg.C로 극저온이다. 이러한 저온에서도 취화되지 않고 사용할 수 있는 재료는 9%Ni강, Al 합금, 스테인레스강 및 Invar 등이 있지만, 탱크의 대형화에 따라 가공성, 용접성 및 경제성을 고려하여 요즈음은 9%Ni강이 주로 사용되고 있다. 한편 9%Ni강용 용접재료는 고Ni계 합금 및 모재와 동일한 성분계의 공금계가 있지만 지금까지 고 Ni계 합급이 주로 사용되고 있다. 본 내용에서는 9%Ni강을 사용한 지상식 평지원통형 LNG 탱크를 예로 들어 탱크의 개요 및 용접재료, 용접시공 등을 포함한 용접기술에 대해서 개괄적으로 설명하고자 한다.

Optimization Study on the Open-Loop Rankine Cycle for Cold Heat Power Generation Using Liquefied Natural Gas (액화천연가스를 활용한 개방형 랭킨 사이클에 적용한 냉열 발전의 최적화에 대한 연구)

  • In this study, computer simulation and optimization works have been performed for an open-loop Rankine cycle to generate power using five cases of liquefied natural gas compositions. PRO/II with PROVISION V9.4 from Schneider electric company was used, and the Soave-Redlich-Kwong equation of the state model was utilized for the design of the power generation cycle. It was concluded that more power was obtained from less molecular weight liquefied natural gas since there was more volumetric flow rate with less molecular weight.

Finite Element Analysis of Membrane for LNG Storage Tank (액화천연가스 저장탱크용 멤브레인의 유한요소해석)

  • This paper analyzes the behaviors of corrugated membrane under the cryogenic liquid pressure and thermal loading using the FEM analysis program MARC. The FEM calculations were carried out on the basis of measured data of Technigaz membrane. It is very important to know the concentration levels and distributions of stress in the corrugated membrane. A quarter of the membrane sheet in place of the whole membrane was simulated because of its geometric symmetricity. The calculated results of the concentrated stress showed that the maximum stress occurs at the knot parts and at the root corner radius of the corrugations. The FEM calculated results indicated that the ring knot membrane which was developed in this study showed uniformly distributed stress and the lowest stress levels in the cross knot area in comparison with other two membranes. These results are very important to optimize the shape and improve the safety of membrane structure.

  • Brake Horse Power (BHP) reduction ratios by air injection to the underside of the hull surface in an actual ship are predicted using an unstructured finite-volume CFD solver and compared with the sea trial results. In addition, air lubrication system installed on the existing vessel is investigated to find a good solution for additional drag reduction. As a results, it is found that the thickness of the air layer should be minimized within a stable range while securing the area covered by the air layer as much as possible. Furthermore, the amount of frictional drag reduced by air injection is found to be independent of surface roughness and still effective on rough surface. Based on the results of this study, it is expected that systematic and reliable air lubrication system can be designed and evaluated using the proposed method.

  • Demand of the clean and convenient natural gas has continuously increased with recognizing of the environment problem since liquefied natural gas was introduced in Korea. Clean fuel natural gas was supplied to each city through high tensile strength pipeline connected by welding. Grades of pipeline were divided into the high and middle pressure according to supply pressure. Pipeline was welded mainly SMA welding process due to its easy handling, the other welding process was adopted according to the constructing condition. We were examined on the microstructure variation and mechanical properties of weld metal for high pressure pipeline, API 5L X-42.

A Study on Natural Gas Cooperation in North East Asia from the Viewpoint of Economic Integration Theory (동북아 천연가스 사업의 협력 가능성 분석 : 경제통합론을 중심으로)

  • The Korean government has tried to introduce pipeline natural gas from Russia, instead of liquefied natural gas from Middle East Asia since 1990s. While this energy cooperation in North East Asia has been discussed in real politics and academic societies, the previous studies have shown the limits on policy implication because they just suggest necessity and possess the problems of weak theoretical frameworks. Therefore, this study tries to analyze the motivations, conditions, and stages for energy cooperation in this region from the viewpoint of economic integration theory. As a result of analysis, these countries in North East Asia have only one motivation, namely economic interest. On the contrary, they have several conditions including real benefit, complementation in economic structures, and convergence in policy goals. In conclusion, this study suggests that low level cooperation such as preferential trade agreement in the field of natural gas is possible and necessary in North East Asia.

  • Using the CNG(compressed natural gas) and LPG(liquified petroleum gas) as the automotive fuel will be expanded because of their clean effect to the environmental air qualify. But these programs of gas using expansion would have a difficulty due to public consideration of gas utilities as a big hazard. The Ministry of Environment has an ambitious plan to substitute more than 25,000 buses with CNG and ensure more than 200 CNG refueling stations as well by the year of 2007. However, it is very difficult to establish new CNG and LPG refueling stations because of expanded safety distance than ever before by several major explosion accidents.

  • Natural gas liquefaction process which is operated under cryogenic condition spends large amount of energy. Most of energy in the natural gas liquefaction process is consumed by compressors. Therefore, minimizing energy consumption of compressors is an important issue in process design and operation. Among various natural gas liquefaction processes, propane pre-cooled mixed refrigerant (C3MR) process consists of mixed refrigerant system and pure refrigerant system. In this study, to find the optimal design of pure refrigerant system, pure refrigerant cycle is simulated on different number of pressure levels and the necessary energy of each design is compared. After that, the driver selection model is applied to analyse each processes, which has different number of equipments, in terms of cost. As the result, the design using many equipments spends lower energy. Using this result, this study suggests standard of process design selection by the cost term.
