A Study on Measurement of Laminar Burning Velocity and Markstein Length of SNG Fuel in Spherical Propagation Flame (구형 전파화염에서 SNG 연료의 층류연소속도와 마크스타인 길이 측정에 관한 연구)

  • An experimental study was conducted to measure laminar burning velocity and Markstein length of SNG fuel with 3% of hydrogen contents from spherical propagating flames at normal and elevated initial pressure. These results were compared with numerical calculations by Premix code with GRI-mech 3.0, USC II and UC San Diego to provide suitable mechanism for SNG fuel. As a result of this work, it was found that the burning velocities and Markstein lengths of SNG fuel decrease with increase of initial pressure regardless of equivalence ratio. In addition, numerical calculations with GRI-mech 3.0 were coincided with experimental results.

Characteristics of Heat Flux in a Compartment Fire - Reduced Scale Test (구획공간 화재의 열유속 특성 - 축소 실험)

  • The present study performs a series of 40 % reduced scale of ISO-9705 fire test to investigate the characteristics of heat flux on the floor level in terms of fire characteristics and location in the compartment. The heat flux was measured with Schmidt-Boelter type heat flux gauge at two locations on the floor level of inside and doorway side of the compartment. Different types of fuel - methane, heptane, toluene, ethanol, polystyrene - were burned in this test series. The measured heat flux inside of the compartment was relatively higher than that of front side as the heat release rate of fire and upper layer temperature increased. The difference of measured heat flux at inside and doorway side increased for high sooty fire. The present study shows that the heat flux distribution at lower layer greatly depend on the thermal radiation from fire and upper layer, not only the upper layer temperature but also various fire characteristics such as composition of combustion gases, soot concentration, ventilation condition and so on.

  • In a CNG/diesel dual-fuel engine, CNG is used as the main fuel and a small amount of diesel is injected into the cylinder to provide ignition priming. In this study, a remodeling of the existing diesel engine into a CNG/diesel dual-fuel engine is proposed. In this engine, diesel is injected at a high pressure by common rail direct injection (CRDI) and CNG is injected at the intake port for premixing. The CNG/diesel dual-fuel engine had an equally satisfactory coordinate torque and power as the conventional diesel engine. Moreover, the CNG alternation rate is over 89% throughout the operating range of the CNG/diesel dual-fuel engine. PM emission by the dual-fuel engine is 94% lower than that by the diesel engine; however, NOx emission by the dual-fuel engine is higher than that by the diesel engine.

  • In addition to the stack that directly generates electricity by the reaction of hydrogen and oxygen, the fuel cell power generation system has a reformer that generates hydrogen from various fuels such as methanol and natural gas. It also consists of a power converter that converts the DC voltage generated in the stack into a stable AC voltage. The fuel cell output of such a system is direct current, and in order to be used at home, an inverter device that converts it into alternating current through a power converter is required. In addition, a DC-DC step-up converter is used to boost the fuel cell voltage to about 30~70V, which is the inverter operating voltage, to about 380V. The DC-DC step-up converter is a DC voltage variable device that exists between the fuel cell output and the inverter. Accordingly, since a constant output voltage of the converter is generated in response to a change in the output voltage of the fuel cell, the inverter can receive constant power regardless of the voltage change of the fuel cell. Therefore, in this paper, we discuss the detailed hardware design of the full-bridge converter, which is the main power source of the inverter that receives the fuel cell output voltage (30~70V) as an input and is applied to the grid among the members of the fuel cell power generation system.

An Analysis of the Economy of Scale for Domestic On-site Hydrogen Fueling Stations (국내 분산형 수소충전소의 규모의 경제성 분석)

  • This paper deals with the economy of scale for domestic on-site hydrogen stations fueled with natural gas and naptha. We evaluate the economic feasibility of on-site hydrogen stations with hydrogen production capacities of $30Nm^3/hr,\;100Nm^3/hr\;and\;300Nm^3/hr$. We build a classical economic feasibility model and we make some sensitivity analyses by changing the values of input factors such as the hydrogen sale price and the discount rate. The estimated hydrogen prices of steam methane reforming stations with production capacities of $30\;Nm^3/hr,\;100\;Nm^3/hr\;and\;300\;Nm^3/hr$ are 18,472 won/kg, 10,689 won/kg and 7,758 won/kg, respectively. Also, the hydrogen prices are about the same if we use naptha as a raw material for hydrogen energy instead of natural gas. It turns out that small and medium size domestic on-site hydrogen stations will not be economical in the near future. This indicates that we need to construct large scale on-site hydrogen fueling stations even for the initial phase of the hydrogen economy.

Understanding, Exploration, and Development of Tight Gas Reservoirs (치밀가스 저류층의 이해와 탐사개발)

  • Natural gas in tight reservoirs, one of unconventional hydrocarbon resources, has become a significant exploration and exploitation targets. Tight gas reservoirs are the gas-bearing rocks that commonly have a permeability of less than 0.1 millidarcy (mD). Tight gas reservoirs are characterized by extensive and deep locations as well as abnormal pressure such as over- or under-pressure. The tight gas reservoirs are independent of structural or stratigraphic traps, whereas conventional gases normally occur at these traps. Tight gas reservoirs can be productive when stimulated by hydraulic fracturing. Better production areas within the tight reservoir beds are referred to as sweet spots that are commonly caused by natural fractures, which should be understood and identified to enhance the recovery of the gas from tight reservoirs. The exploration and production techniques allow the commercial production of tight gas, one of environmentally friendly resources. Slant and horizontal wells have best production when they intersect the fractures. Gas production from the tight reservoirs has rapidly grown in U.S. and Canada. Indeed, the U.S. gas production of tight sandstones increases from 11.1% in 1990 to 24.1% in 2005. The presence of tight gas reservoirs has been suggested on the Korean offshore block 6-1. Paradigm shift from conventional to unconventional tight reservoir is required to develop the tight gas from the block.

  • Carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) exists not only as a component of natural gas, biogas, and landfill gas, but also as a major combustion product of fossil fuels which leads to a major contributor to greenhouse gases. Hence it is essential to reduce or eliminate carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) in order to obtain high fuel efficiency of internal combustion engine, to prevent corrosion of gas transportation system, and to cope with climate change preemptively. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in not only conventional membrane-based separation but also new adsorbent-based separation technology. Particularly, in the case of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), it has been received tremendous attentions due to its unique properties (eg : flexibility, gate effect or strong binding site such as open metal sites) which are different from those of typical porous adsorbents. Therefore, in this study, stereotype of two MOFs have been selected as its flexible MOFs (MIL-53) representative and numerous open metal sites MOFs (MOF-74) representative, and compared each other for $CO_2/CH_4$ separation performance. Furthermore, varying and changeable separation performance conditions depending on the temperature, pressure or samples' unique properties are discussed.

Conceptual Design of the Fuel Injection Valve Tester for ME-LGI Marine Engine by Using System Engineering (ME-LGI 선박엔진용 연료분사밸브 테스터 개발을 위한 시스템 엔지니어링 기반 개념 설계)

  • As environmental regulations have been strengthened and high fuel efficiency has been in demand in recent years, the number of ships using natural gas as a fuel is increasing. The demand for ships using LPG or methanol, which are emerging as eco-friendly vessel fuels, is also increasing. In this perspective, ME-LGI engines using LPG or methanol as a fuel have attracted considerable attention. Ships equipped with an ME-LGI engine are required to check the reliability of the fuel injection valve during shipping. This means that the development of a fuel injection valve tester is essential for the commercialization of ME-LGI engine. This study conducted the conceptual design of a fuel injection valve tester for ME-LGI engines using a system engineering process in the order of requirements analysis, functional analysis, and design synthesis. In the requirement analysis stage, the operating process of fuel injection valve was analyzed, and the necessity of checking the sealing oil leakage was then derived. In the functional analysis stage, the functions and flow of them were defined at each functional level. In the design synthesis stage, the equipment for each function was set and the process block diagram based on it was derived. In addition, preliminary risk analysis was performed as a part of system analysis and control, and safety measures were added to the conceptual design. This study is expected to be a good reference material for the concept design of other systems in the future because it shows the application process of a system engineering process to the conceptual design in detail.

Development of Internal Reforming Catalysts and Catalysts Forming Method using Homogeneous Precipitation (균일용액침전법을 이용한 내부개질촉매의 개발과 성형방법에 대한 연구)

  • 용융탄산염 연료전지(MCFC)는 $650^{\circ}C$에서 작동하는 고온형 연료전지 시스템이다. 이 시스템은 천연가스 등을 개질하여 생산된 수소를 바로 전기로 생산할 수 있는 시스템으로 열효율이 높으며, 현재 대체 발전시스템으로 각광을 받고 있다. MCFC는 개질방식에 따라 내부개질 방식과 외부개질 방식이 있다. 내부개질 방식은 수소를 생산하는 개질기가 스택내부에 장착된 형식으로 천연가스를 스택내부에서 개질하여 바로 전기를 생산하는 방식이다. 이 내부개질반응에 사용되는 촉매로는 알루미나에 담지된 니켈(Ni) 계열촉매이 주로 쓰이고 있다. 또한 내부개질촉매의 형태는 작은 원주형의 촉매형태로 성형되어 사용된다. 이 성형된 촉매의 크기가 바로 내부개질 스택의 크기를 결정하는 중요한 요소이다. 그래서 촉매의 크기는 되도록이면 작게 성형하는 것이 중요하다. 그러나 촉매의 크기가 너무 작으면 촉매를 성형하는데 큰 어려움이 생기게 된다. 본 연구에서는 니켈 촉매를 공침법이 아닌 균일용액침전법을 이용하여 제조하였으며, 이 촉매를 이용하여 지름이 약 2 mm 이하로 촉매를 압출성형하는 방법을 연구하였다. 먼저 요소(urea)를 이용한 균일용액침전법으로 촉매를 제조하였다. 최적의 촉매 합성조건을 살펴보기 위해서, 반응 온도를 80, 85, 90, 95, $100^{\circ}C$로 변화 시키면서 제조된 촉매의 특성을 살펴보았다. 그리고 촉매의 적절한 니켈 양을 알아보기 위해서 니켈의 양을 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 wt%로 변화 시켰으며, 조촉매로 사용되는 MgO 양을 5, 10, 15, 20 wt%로 변화 시켜서 제조된 촉매의 특성을 살펴보았다. 물성을 비교하기 위해서, X-선 회절분석(XRD) 및 TPR, 물리화학흡착을 하였다. 그 결과 침전반응온도가 $80^{\circ}C$에서 촉매가 가장 좋은 물성을 보였으며, 우수한 개질성능을 보였다. 그리고 촉매 활성물질인 니켈의 함량은 50 wt% 정도가 가장 적절한 함량이었으며, MgO의 함량이 15 wt%일 때 가장 우수한 물성과 개질 성능을 보여주었다. 이 촉매들은 공침법으로 제조된 상용촉매와 비교하였을 때, 보다 우수한 물성과 개질성능 보였다. 그래서 이 촉매를 균일침전법을 이용하여 대량으로 제조한 다음 압출성형 방법을 이용하여 촉매를 원주형으로 제조하였다. 먼저 제조된 촉매는 별도의 분쇄작업(볼밀 혹은 제트밀)을 거치지 않아도 입자사이즈가 약 $4{\mu}m$ 수준이 나오도록 촉매 제조조건을 조절 하였다. 그리고 소량의 Methyl cellulose(MC) 바이더와 물만 사용하여 촉매를 혼합한 다음 스크류 압출기를 이용하여 촉매를 성형하였다. 이 촉매는 지름이 약 2 mm 이하로 제조할 수 있었으며, 기계적 강도는 타정기로 성형한 상용촉매보다 우수하였다. 그리고 촉매 성능 또한 상용촉매와 비교하였을 때, 우수한 성능 보였다. MCFC용 내부개질 촉매로 균일용액침전법을 사용한 촉매가 적합하다고 판단되며, 압출성형에도 적합하다고 판단되었다.

The effect of MgO content on highly active Ni-MgO-$Al_2O_3$ catalysts prepared by homogeneous precipitation method (균일용액침전법으로 제조한 MgO 함량에 따른 고활성 Ni-MgO-$Al_2O_3$ 촉매에 대한 연구)

MCFC는 개질방식에 따라 내부개질 방식과 외부개질 방식이 있다. 내부개질 방식은 수소를 생산하는 개질기가 스택내부에 장착된 형식으로 천연가스를 스택내부에서 개질하여 바로 전기를 생산하는 방식이다. 이 내부개질반응에 사용되는 촉매로는 알루미나에 고함량 (약 50 wt.%)으로 담지된 니켈(Ni) 계열촉매이 주로 쓰이고 있다. 이 고함량으로 담지된 촉매는 대부분 높은 활성을 보인다. 비교적 낮은 온도 운전조건 (약 $580{\sim}620^{\circ}C$)을 가지는 MCFC 내부개질에 적용하기 위해서는 활성점인 니켈을 최대한 담지체에 고르게 분산 시켜야한다. 이를 위해서 MgO를 이용하여 촉매의 활성점을 높게 분산시키는 연구를 진행 하였다. 촉매를 제조하는 방법으로 요소(urea)를 이용한 균일용액침전법을 이용하였다. 니켈함량은 50 wt.%로 고정을 한 다음, MgO 양과 $Al_2O_3$ 양을 각각 0 ~ 45 wt.%와 5 ~ 50 wt.%로 조절하면서 촉매를 제조하여 그 특성들을 분석하였다. 물성을 비교하기 위해서, X-선 회절분석 (XRD) 및 TPR, 물리화학흡착 실험을 하였다. 촉매의 활성을 살펴보기 위해서, fresh 상태 및 피독 상태에서 메탄수증기 개질활성 실험을 실시하였다. MgO 함량이 없거나 적은 촉매에서는 높은 BET surface area와 작은 NiO, metallic Ni 결정 크기가 나타났다. 반면 MgO 함량이 높은 촉매에서 낮은 BET surface area와 비교적 큰 NiO, metallic Ni 결정 크기가 나타났다. 또한 XRD 분석에서 MgO 함량이 증가할 수 록 MgO 결정 피크가 명확히 나타났으며, $MgAl_2O_4$ 피크는 나타나지 않았다. TPR 분석에서 촉매들의 환원 피크를 측정한 결과, 저함량의 MgO를 포함한 촉매는 $700^{\circ}C$ 부근에 환원 피크가 관찰되었고 MgO가 고함량인 촉매는 환원 피크가 $400^{\circ}C$ 부근에서 관찰되었다. 촉매의 초기 fresh 상태에서의 활성은 고함량 MgO를 포함한 Ni-90M10A 샘플을 제외하고 모든 촉매가 거의 비슷하게 나타났다. 그러나 $K_2CO_3$ 피독 상태에서는 MgO 함량이 증가할 수 록 활성이 좋지 않았음을 알 수 있었다. 따라서 MgO가 소량 포함된 촉매의 경우 fresh 상태에서는 우수한 물성과 활성을 보이지만, 피독상태에서는 MgO가 포함되지 않은 Ni-$Al_2O_3$ 촉매가 우수한 활성을 보였다.
