The NTR(New Tubular Roof) method was used to secure the stability of the tunnel and minimize the subsidence of the road. The tunnel was constructed at about 7.5 meters deep below the highway. with a width of about 21 meters. Following the NTR method, 13 steel pipes with a diameter of 2.3 meters were digged and pushed in longitudinally along the tunnel profile and cut out sides of pipes to connect to adjacent pipes, then filled the inside of pipes and the connected space between pipes with concrete to complete the lining of the tunnel to be excavated. As the steel pipes were digged in sequentially, the area of relaxation was connected to each other and behaves like a gradually widening tunnel. When the steel pipes were digged in to the widest points of the tunnel, the settlement rate of the road surface was increasing to the maximum as 2.2 mm and the total settlement until the lining construction was approximately 7.7 mm. After that, by excavating a tunnel inside the pre-installed lining, an additional settlement of about 4.3 mm was occurred, resulting in the total settlement of about 11.8 mm after completing of tunnel construction.
The ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ mine has irregularly developed stratum around the ore body. The purpose of this study is to array irregular stratum thickness systematically for effective roof bolting and to implement a supporting system corresponding to it. The number of 81 cases combined with stratum thicknesses was limited to 9 cases by robust design. For each case, the load height which can act as a roof load was determined by the characteristics of stratum and RMR. The load range due to the load height is calculated assuming block shaped and arch shape. The support load of the roof bolt was considered as the average load of the two methods. Numerical analysis results of the support design showed that the cable bolt was more effective for the roof supporting fully grouted than the anchoring type. As a result of the construction, it was possible to control the roof, but all of the roof was gradually sinking downward due to the deformation of the side wall of the mine tunnel.
Final convergence of tunnel crown due to excavation have been well predicted by regression analysis which is expressed as a function of convergence curve on a time and distance dependent. In this study, the validity of the equations for shallow, wide tunnel was investigated by measurement and numerical analysis. Studied tunnel(Sansoo Tunnel) is located at the boundary of downtown and mountain park. Exponential predictions equation was better coincided with measured data than fractional equation for studied tunnel, although the ground was expected to be elasto-plastic. This is because weathered rock ground is changed elasto-plastic ground into elastic ground by multi-steel grouting and forepoling.
Sinkhole subsidence occurs over abandoned mine workings and can be detrimental to human lives, damage to properties and other surface structures. In this study, simulation of sinkhole development process is performed using special finite element procedure. Especially, creation of mine voids due to roof falls and generation of goaf from broken rocks are simulated using active-passive-active finite elements. An active or solid element can be made passive or void once the tensile failure criterion is satisfied in the specified sinkhole formation zone. Upon completion of sinkhole development process, these passive elements in again be made active to simulate goal region. Several finite element models are analyzed to evaluate the relationships between sinkhole formation with width of gallery. depth of mine, roof condition and bulking factor of roof rocks. This study demonstrates that the concept of passive elements in numerical analysis can be used effectively for analyzing sinkhole formation or roof fall phenomenon in general.
Utilization of completed open-pit for mining waste disposal is an alternative method of tailing storage facility (TSF), which can minimize the area and cost required for the installation of TSF. However, long-term tailing disposal into open-pit has a potential risk of reducing mechanical stability of surrounding rock mass by acting as an additional load. In this research, a realistic open-pit tailing disposal scenario of 60,400 hours was established based on the case of Marymia gold mine, Australia. Mechanical stability of surface pillar between open-pit and underground stope was analyzed numerically by using Sigma/W, under different stope geometry and rock mass conditions. Simulation results showed that long-term tailing disposal into open-pit can significantly increase the failure probability of surface piller. This result suggests that mechanical stability of mine geometry should be conducted beforehand of open-pit tailing disposal.
In this study, scaled model tests were performed to investigate the stability of three parallel tunnels. Seven types of test models which had respectively different pillar widths, tunnel sectional shapes, support conditions and ground conditions were experimented, where crack initiating pressures and deformation behaviors around tunnels were investigated. In order to evaluate the effect of pillar widths on stability, various models were experimented. As results, the models with shallower pillar widths proved to be unstable because of lower crack initiating pressures and more tunnel convergences than the models with thicker pillar widths. In order to find the effect of tunnel sectional shape on stability, the models with arched, semi-arched and rectangular tunnels were experimented. Among them rectangular tunnel model was the most unstable, where the arched tunnel model with small radius of roof curvature was more stable than semi-arched one. The model with rockbolt showed higher crack initiating pressure and less roof lowering than the unsupported model. The deformation behaviors of tunnels in the anisotropic ground model were quite different from those in the isotropic ground model. Futhermore, the results of FLAC analysis were qualitatively coincident with the experimental results.
Arched openings are generally excavated in underground construction works. Since stress distribution around openings depends on geological structure in rock mass, any shape of arched openings fully conformed with in-situ stress condition should be recommended to maintain mechanical safety of structures. Shape of arched openings is specified by both roof curvature and height-width ratio, and especially this report presents deformation behaviors related with roof curvature. Scale model tests and numerical studies of various shaped openings are conducted, where rectangular opening shows the greatest convergence. Through the anlayses of various arched opengings, as radius of roof curvature is increased, roof lowering and sidewall closure are remarkably increased, whereas floor heaving is increased little by little. By the way, it is useful that displacements of openings are roughly estimated in the stage of preliminary investigation. To find out elastic displacements of arched openings with any roof curvature, regressional formula and charts by least square method are represented. In addition elastoplastic deformation behavoirs of arched openings concerning associated adn non-associated flow rule are discussed.
Scaled model tests were performed to evaluate the reinforcement effect of rock bolts in anisotropic rock mass. For this purpose, two tunnel cases were experimented which had different tunnel sizes, rock strengths, anisotropic angles and coefficients of lateral pressure. The fully grouted rock bolts of the D25 deformed bar were modeled as the basting pins with bead and were systematically installed at the roof and the side wall of the model tunnel. As results of the first case experimentations, the unsupported model showed initial crack at the roof of tunnel, but the supported model with rock bolts showed initial crack at the floor of tunnel where rock bolts were not installed. The crack initiating pressure and the maximum pressure of the supported model with rock bolts were 11% and 7% larger than those of the unsupported model, respectively. Moreover, the effect of the existing discontinuities in anisotropic rock mass on the fracture behavior of tunnel was reduced in the supported model, and so the reinforcement effect of rock bolt turned out to be experimentally verified. As results of the second case experimentations considering different support patterns, the crack initiating pressures of models were larger and the reduction ratios of tunnel area according to applied load were smaller as the length and the quantity of rock bolts were larger. Therefore, it was found that the performance of the rock bolts turned out to be improved as they were larger.

For minimizing the effect on the focus of civil traffic and environment conditions related to the excavation at the traffic jamming points, an underground station tunnel was planned with 35.5 m in length and bigger area than $200\;m^2$ in sedimentary rock mass. It faced the case that the overburden was just under 13 m. Not based on a pattern design but on the case histories of similar projects and arching effect, the design of large section tunnel under shallow overburden was investigated on three design subjects which are shape effect on the section area, application method of support pressure, and supporting and tunnel safety. According to the mechanical effect from section shape, a basic design and a preliminary design was obtained, and then supporting method of large section was planned by the supporting of NATM and a pipe roof method for subsidence prevention and mechanical stability. From the comparative study between both designs, it was found that the basic design was suitable and acceptable for the steel alignment of tunnel lining, safety and the design parameter restricted by the limit considered as partition of the excavation facilities. Through the analysis result of preliminary design showing the mechanical stability without stress concentration in tunnel arch level, it also was induced that shape effect of the large section area and yielding load obtained from deformation zone in the surrounding rock mass of tunnel have to be considered as major topics for the further development of design technique on the large section tunnel.
For increase of reality in numerical analysis, a blasting vibration waveform obtained from field blast operations has been directly used for input parameters of dynamic analysis in the form of vibration velocity. A numerical model was built considering the geological characteristics of underground limestone opening as well as the mining stages in this opening, and the effect of blast operations on stability of underground limestone opening was investigated by dynamic numerical analysis. The adequacy of applying the real vibration waveform to dynamic analysis has been approved from the preliminary analysis, and the dynamic numerical analysis results show that the continuous mining operation can cause the collapse of roof in openings and the active yield zone around openings. Therefore, the additional reinforcements should be applied for ensuring the stability of underground limestone openings.
