The K-means algorithm is the most widely used method among the codebook generation algorithms in vector quantization. In this paper, we propose a codebook generation algorithm using a new updating condition to enhance the codebook performance. The conventional K-means algorithm uses a fixed weight of the distance for all training iterations, but the proposed method uses different weights according to the updating condition from the new codevectors for training iterations. Then, different weights can be applied to generate codevectors at each iteration according to this condition, and it can have a similar effect to variable weights. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has the better codebook performance than that of K-means algorithm.

The purpose of this study is to understand the value of Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury as the second most favored 'One Book', and the goals of the communities which selected this particular book. A total of 53 'One Book' programs from 2001 through 2014 and 136 TBR programs from 2007 through 2015 selected this book as 'One Book' to read. In this study, 270 programs in TBR 2008/09, and more than 240 programs in TBR 2014/15 and several 'One Book' projects were analyzed. The results confirm the significance of book discussions and movie showing, the focus on such subjects as censorship, banned books, and freedom of expression, etc., and a close relationship between the diversity of programs and cooperation with community members.

In this paper, in order to reduce the computational complexity of codebook, we propose a fast search algorithm which takes advantage of the information generated in the process of the self-organizing map (SOM). In an attempt to demonstrate the influence of the ordering of codebook on the performance of the partial distance search (PDS), we present the results of computation savings for three cases of ordering of codebooks.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of juvenile books on Korea and Japan in WorldCat and observe the possibility of diffusing knowledge on each country. The distribution of bibliographic records of books published from 1993 through 2012, and especially the books published in 1997, when the numbers of books on both countries were the closest, were analyzed in detail in terms of language, genre, subject headings, and holding libraries. The result shows much fewer bibliographic records of juvenile books on Korea than those of books on Japan, and their growing gap every year. There were also much fewer holding libraries and copies of books on Korea, published in 1997, compared to books on Japan. The texts were mostly written in Korean and in tones set for very young readers. A serious lack of diversity in subjects and genres with the focus on Korean folklores and anecdotal biographies were also observed. Therefore, there seems to be nothing much interesting to read that would help promote the diffusion of knowledge on Korea through libraries around the world.

당신에게도 도서관은 어떤 의미인가? 당신의 기억 속 그곳은 입시나 취업준비의 중압감을 안고 공부했던 곳, 혹은 보고 싶은 책은 항상 대출 중인 휑한 곳이 아니었던가. 현재 상황도 별반 다르지는 않다. 작은 도서관 운동등 변화를 시도하는 움직임이 늘곤 있지만, 아직까지 우리의 공공 도서관은 멀고, 협소하고, 자료도 별로 없는 초라한 형색이다. 하지만 도서관의 궁핍한 처지를 탓하기 전에 자신에게 한번 물어보라. 바쁜 일상과 먼 거리를 핑계 삼아 '도서관은 나와 상관없는 곳'으로 치부하지는 않았는지 말이다.

In order to find a sanitary logistic way to handle library books, papers and environmental sources contacting the books were tested in their microbial contamination load and methods to decontaminate the books were investigated. Generally bacterial load of inner book pages was very low, but increased when contaminated with liquid such as saliva. In contrast, their lateral ends showed much higher bacterial contamination presumably due to dry dust contamination on there. As operations to improve the sanitary book conditions, turbulent air blow was found to be workable for reducing dry dusty contamination and 280 nm ultra-violet (UV) light emitting diode (LED) was so for decontaminating wet surface contamination. Microbial inactivation by the UV LED could be realized with irradiation for more than 5 minutes at 2 cm distance. Air blow of 5.5 m/s for 0.5~1 minute could reduce the dusty contamination on a model book surface.

Four statistics books, one translated by statisticians and three by non-statisticians, are reviewed. They are reviewed in terms of indices and bibliographies, statistical theory and terms, and the history of statistics. In addition, book review articles appeared in daily newspapers are considered. Unfortunately, we can find many(some of them trivial, and some others serious) problems in the translations. Many problems could have been got around if the books had been translated by statisticians. So, conclusion suggested in this article is very simple: Translation of statistics books, especially books for the laymen, is a job that Korean statisticians should not shift to others. 실습생 및 초급항해사에게 항해 중 가장 기본적으로 요구되는 충돌회피를 위한 선박조종 실습은 법적 책임 및 타 선박과의 불규칙한 조우로 인하여 직접적인 충돌회피 조종 실습이 곤란할 뿐만 아니라 타 선박과의 조우 상황 자체가 극히 제한되어 있는 실정이다. 이에 이 연구는 한국해양대학교 실습선 한나라호의 2007년 원양항해 중 타 선박과의 조우형태를 조사하여 해양계열 대학 실습생 및 초급 항해사에게 실제 해역에서 발생할 수 있는 조우상황별 위험도를 분석하여 이를 기초로 하여 충돌회피를 위한 효율적인 판단 능력 향상을 위한 기초 실습교육 자료를 개발하고자 한다. 그리고 추후에는 이러한 자료를 선박조종시뮬레이터에 적용하여 임의의 조우 상황하에서 안전한 선박조종이 가능하도록 교육 훈련함으로써 보다 효율적인 실습교육에 이바지 할 것으로 판단된다.
