  • This study investigates the improvement in the performance of a temperature and humidity measuring system developed by Company A using the Aspirated Radiation Shield (ARS). The shield has been used in the industry and its accuracy was verified recently. The study also experimentally examines the impact of the wind speed of the ARS device on temperature and humidity. The results are summarized as follows. Before the improvement of the system, the temperature of Company A's system was up to 10.2℃ higher than that measured by the ARS device, and the measured relative humidity was approximately 20.0% lower. After improving the system, the temperature and relative humidity of nodes 1 and 2 were found to be almost identical. The temperature deviations including the maximum, mean, and minimum temperatures between those measured in node 2 and by ARS were approximately 0.2 to 0.7℃, respectively; further, the values measured by ARS tended to be slightly lower or higher. In terms of relative humidity, the ARS measurements yielded values approximately 10.0% higher immediately after sunset; otherwise, the values were approximately 1.9% lower. Moreover, when node 1 was set to minimum-middle, middle-maximum, and maximum, the deviations including the maximum, mean, and minimum temperatures of nodes 1 and 2 were 0.1 to 0.4℃, 0.0 to 0.2℃, and 0.0 to 0.5℃, respectively. The deviations including the maximum, average, and minimum temperatures of the three points of node 1 and the ARS ranged from 0.2 to 0.5℃, 0.1 to 2.2℃, and 0.1 to 1.1℃, respectively, indicating that the temperature deviation according to the wind speed was negligible. In addition, considering the results of the previous study with those from this study, the optimal wind speed to improve the temperature deviation is considered to be in the range of 1.0~2.0 m·s-1.

  • Fletcher-Suit colpostat has an internal structure to reduce dose to bladder and rectum. Some programs were developed to calculate dose at any point in water in three dimension around the colpostat containing Cs-137 tube, to find the shielding effect to dose by the internal structure, and to draw isodose curves and iso-shielding effect curves. Computer was an IBM compatible AT with EGA card and language was MS-Basic V6.0, Material, shape and geometry of the strucure, tube and colpostat were considered in algorithm for calculation of dose. Dose rates per unit mg. Ra. eq. in water calculated by a program were stored in auxiliary memory devices and retrieved in another programs. Isodose curves on medial side shrinked. Dose distribution was not symmetric about a transverse axis bisecting the colpostat. Reduction of dose was more excessive on top side than on bottom. Iso-shielding effect curve showed that the shielding effect was higher on top side than on bottom, and that there was shielding effect over almost all area of medial side. Such results were related to both shifted position of tube in the colpostat and asymmetric distribution of active source in the tube. Maximum of shielding effect was $49\%$ on top side and $44\%$ on bottom side. The direction of iso-shielding effect curve was generally radial from the center of active source. In treatment planning using Fletcher-Suit colpostat, the internal structure should be considered to find precise doses to bladder and rectum, etc.

  • When using a mobile X-ray unit, primary radiation creates medical images and secondary radiation scatters in many directions, which reduces image quality and causes exposure to patients, care givers and medical personnel. The purpose of this study was to develop a radiation shielding system for effectively shielding secondary radiation and evaluate its effectiveness. Using a mobile X-ray unit, spatial dose according to presence of human equivalent phantom and spatial dose using the developed shielding device were measured, and the phantom at 80 cm equidistance from center of X-ray was compared with spatial dose according to use of a shield. Measurements were taken at intervals of 10 cm every $30^{\circ}$ from the head direction($-90^{\circ}$) to the body direction($+90^{\circ}$). In the spatial dose measurement with and without the phantom, when the human equivalent Phantom was used, the spatial dose was increased by 40% in all directions from 40 cm to 100 cm from the central X-ray, and about 88% of the space dose was reduced when using the developed shields with the phantom. The equidistance dose at 80 cm from the central X-ray was increased by 39% from $5.1{\pm}0.26{\mu}Gy$ to $7.1{\pm}0.15{\mu}Gy$ when the human equivalent phantom was used, and when phantom was used and shielding was used, the spatial dose was reduced by about 90% from $7.1{\pm}0.15{\mu}Gy$ to $0.7{\pm}0.07{\mu}Gy$. The spatial dose of natural radiation was measured to be about $0.2{\pm}0.04{\mu}Gy$ when using the developed shielding with Phantom at a distance of 1 m or more. It is expected that by using the developed shielding system, it will be possible to effectively reduce secondary radiation dose received in all directions and to ensure safe imaging.

  • Radiation shielding analysis for a 6MeV X-ray facility was carried out. The primary and leakage radiation for the facility can be evaluated based on the methodology in NCRP No. 49 and 51. The present study deals with radiation scattering analysis for the outside and inside door of the facility based on the albedo concept. The calculated dose rates were compared with the results of MORSE-CG code calculation and the measured data, resulting in a good agreement, even though there existed some deviation for the inside door. These results can be utilized to the radiation shielding design of the medical and industrial X and gamma ray facilities, and to the safety evaluation of these facilities.

  • The arc thermal metal spraying method (ATMSM) has been used in Korea to improve the electromagnetic pulse (EMP) shielding effect of building and infrastructure by three machines of MS, KMS and HMS (Metal Spray, Korea Metal Spray, High-frequency Meta Spray). The adhesion ability of sprayed metal was found to be 58.32, 64.66 and 87.62% for MS, KMS and HMS, respectively. The metal sprayed area per hour of MS, KMS and HMS was calculated and found to be 14.3, 19.25 and 22.16㎡/h, respectively. The HMS showed the highest metal spray area attributed to the diameter of metal wire i.e. 1.6mm which sprayed 80 mm with 18 m/min. There was minimum loss of metal and the highest efficiency by HMS compared to others. Therefore, it is suggested to use HMS for metal spraying by ATMSM to enhance the EMP shielding effect.

  • In this study, we propose a method of suppressing the leakage noise signal of motor assembly through the test. The motor assembly is mounted on outside of the aircraft to rotate an antenna and must satisfy RE102 requirement on MIL-STD-461F in terms of electromagnetic interference. It is confirmed by RE102 test result hat the leakage noise signal of the equipment occurs due to external influx through the power and control cable and rotation of the motor. And it is ascertained that the part where internal/external physical shielding is difficult to rotate is the leakage path. To reduce the leakage noise signal, the electrical ground reinforcement and the electric shielding structure considering the operation of the equipment is applied and it is verified that the requirement is satisfied. Finally, we verified that required specification are met by applying circular corrugated choke with interlocking shapes and conductive grease to the noise leakage path.

  • Sitting position upper extremity X-ray examinations (SUEX) is the most widely used patient positioning method for upper extremity X-ray examinations. For this method, the radiation dose is considerable for relatively less interesting organs. We investigated whether patients need to wear the apron during the examination or not. We also studied the examination methods which can reduce the radiation dose. The results showed that radiation dose was reduced as the distance of source to patient becomes longer and the thickness of object grows higher.

  • With the development of weapon systems by mounting various sensors, it makes important to analyze the precise functioning of sensor to external environment. In the case of small arms with magnetic sensor, the malfunction of small arms might be caused by strong external magnetic fields. In this study, the effects of magnetic sensor on external magnetic fields were analyzed, and optimal magnetic shield and shield structure were designed through M&S. In addition, the magnetic-shielding effectiveness of magnetic sensor in small arms was verified with commercial shielding materials. As a result, it was demonstrated that the Fe-Cu-Si-Nd-B with the structure of multi-layer metallic shields was shown the magnetic-shielding effectiveness of 83 % for an external permanent magnet and 19 % for an alternating magnetic field of 180 dBpT at 60 Hz, respectively.
