Analysis of Breakdown Characteristics by Lane Interaction at Freeway Merging Area with a View of Time and Space (차로별 교통류 상호영향에 따른 고속도로 합류부 교통와해 특성 분석에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this paper is to perform a basic study on the interaction between lanes, which can be achieved through analyzing traffic breakdown at the microscopic level. Using aerial photographic data for the microscopic analysis, this study analyzed the characteristics of traffic flow at a merging area. This research produced aggregated traffic data such as flows, speeds, and densities in 30 second intervals by lane for the macroscopic analysis and individual headway data by lane for the microscopic analysis. The paper contains an analysis of lane characteristics through flows, speeds, densities, and headway variations and also investigates the influence of ramp flows on mainline flows with space-time diagrams. Firstly, the merging area in this study is divided into three sections: before-merging, during-merging, and after-merging. The transition process was analyzed at each lane. Secondly, the breakdown was observed in detail with data divided in 50-foot units. The breakdown was checked through the relationships between ramp and freeway mainline flows, various techniques were proposed to analyze the breakdown, and the formation of breakdown was introduced as three stages in this study. In the near future, the findings of this study could contribute to determining the dynamic capacity on freeways by easily understanding changeable traffic breakdown patterns over time and space.

Assessing Signalized Intersection Performance by Individual Lane Level Using Current HCM Methods and Software (기존 HCM 분석방법과 분석 소프트웨어를 이용한 신호교차로의 차로별 분석방법 연구)

  • Signalized intersection analysis using lane groups often generalizes distinct characteristics of individual lanes. An individual lane level analysis procedure is proposed. The method can assess individual lane LOS without additional data collection efforts. Analysis results of the proposed method were compared with the current HCM analysis results and outputs of aaSIDRA, which can calculate intersection performance lane-by-lane. The results showed individual lane analysis mostly produces similar results with HCM and aaSIDRA. However, lane analysis results for permitted left lanes showed some differences with aaSIRDRA due to the different method of assessing saturation flow rate of the permitted left turn movement. It is expected that the proposed method could complement the weaknesses of current HCM signalized intersection analysis.

Analysis of stable flow traffic characteristics to develop spatial distribution models for freeway-diverging sections (지방부 고속도로-유출부 구간의 정상류 교통특성 규명 및 교통분포 모형식의 개발)

  • 고속도로-연결로는 두 개의 교통흐름이 서로 상충되는 지점으로서 복잡한 교통행태를 나타내고 고속도로 구간 중 용량저하 및 교통와해현상, 난류현상이 일어나는 구간으로서 운영상 문제점이 많이 일어나고 있는 상태이다. 이 구간에서의 운영상태가 전체 시설물의 운영상태에 큰 영향을 끼친다는 점을 감안할 때, 이 구간의 국내자료를 토대로 한 교통류 분석은 중요한 의미를 가진다. 따라서, 교통행태에 대한 미시적인 분석이 이루어지지 않은 상태로 기존의 HCM 모형과 같은 거시적인 분석 방법만을 가지고는 분류구간 교통현상을 규명하기 어렵다. 본 연구에서는 기존 연구들 분석방법의 문제점을 해결하기 위해, 고속도로-연결로 구간중 유출부 구간을 대상으로 현장조사를 실시하였고, 지점(구간)과 차로로 세분하여 미시적인 방법으로 교통특성을 규명하였다. 또 한 유출부 구간의 여러 지점에서 지점 및 차로별 교통량을 예측할 수 있는 교통분포 모형식을 개발하였다. 정립된 교통분포 모형식을 적용해 본 결과 유출부 구간의 분석 및 서비스 수준의 평가는 연결로 접속차로(Vl)의 교통량만을 고려하여 분석하는 것은 합리적이지 않고, 연결로나 본선 모두와 진입부를 포함한 연결로 전체를 다 고려해야 한다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 미시적인 분석방법을 통한 차로별 교통분포 모형식은 기존 분석방법과 비교하여 더 정확하게 그리고 폭 넓은 분석 및 적용하기에 손쉬운 모형이라는 점에서 상당히 효과적인 분석방법이라고 할 수 있다. 하지만 본 연구의 결과는 한 조사지점에 대한 적은 자료를 토대로 하였기 때문에 실제적용 가능성에서 향후 보강할 필요가 있으며, 다른 지점의 현장조사와 세밀한 비교연구가 필요하다.

  • Expressways are built to provide for high levels of safety and efficiency in the movement of large traffic volumes at high speeds. However, Gyeongbu and Namhae expressways in the country which are often suffering from the transportation problems with increased import and exoprt cargo trucks including the container vehicles are the major expressways having the Busan Port as the origin and destination regions, and are required to study the expressway traffic characteristics for reducing the transportation problems. We therefore attempted to suggest the expressway density predictive model through the correlation analysis between lane occupancy and mean density at the 8-lane basic segments of the above major expressways in the country.

Lane-wise Travel Speed Characteristics Analysis in Uninterrupted Flow Considering Lane-wise Speed Reversal (차로속도역전현상을 고려한 연속류 도로의 차로별 주행 속도 특성 분석)

  • In this study, lane-wise traffic flow characteristics were analysed on uninterrupted flow using a new notion of "lane-wise travel speed reversal (LTSR)" which is defined as a phenomena that travel speed in the median lane is lower than other lanes. Mathematical formulation was also proposed to calculate the strength of LTSR. The experiment road site is Seoul Outer Ring Expressway (Jayuro-IC~Jangsoo-IC), and travel trajectories for each four lane were collected for weekdays (Mon. through Fri.) during morning peak. Comparing lane-wise travel speeds for entire test road section, no LTSR was observed, meaning that the travel speed in the median lane is the fastest, followed by 2nd, 3rd, and 4th lane as in order. Howerver, the result of microscopic analysis using 100-meter discrete road section based data shows that LTSR occurs many times. Especially the strength of LTSR is higher in congestion area and freeway merge and diverge segment. It is expected that these results could be used as a fundamental data when establishing lane-by-lane traffic operation strategy and developing lane-wise traffic information collection and dissemination technology.

Condition Analysis of Breakdown Occurrence at Freeway Weaving Section (고속도로 엇갈림구간 교통와해 발생 여건 분석)

  • Weaving is defined as the crossing of two or more traffic streams traveling in the same general direction along a significant length of highway without the aid of traffic control devices. Compared with other freeway sections, perturbation is easy to happen at weaving section. Because there are a lot of lane-changing maneuvers at the weaving section, traffic is subject to turbulence in excess of that normally presents on freeway basic section. This turbulence causes operational problems and its impact must be considered. The purpose of this paper is to perform a basic study on flow characteristics by lane, which can be achieved through analyzing breakdown phenomenon in the microscopic approach. The study made use of data derived from the aerial photography for the microscopic analysis. This research produced the 30-second interval data such as flows, speeds, and densities for the macroscopic analysis and derived the vehicular data to draw time-space diagram for the microscopic analysis. The paper analyzed the traffic characteristics using flows, speeds and densities variation and investigated the conditions of breakdown occurrence with the time-space diagrams. The breakdown phenomenon was identified at weaving section and the propagation from free flow to synchronized flow was observed in this study. In the future, the findings help develop the traffic operational algorithm to manage the traffic congestion under ubiquitous circumstance since the conditions of breakdown Phenomenon can be understood more.

Capacity Analysis in the Ramp Junction of the Urban Freeway Connected with the Busan Port (부산항과 연계된 도시고속도로의 연결로 접속부내 용량특성분석에 관한 연구)

  • Urban freeway is defined as the roadway with 4 lanes or more which requires a high design criteria for handling a large capacity of vehicles rapidly as a high-speed exclusive roadway in the city. However, most of the urban freeways suffer from severe traffic congestion due to the increased traffic exceeding their capacities regardless of the morning and afternoon rushhours or the inbound and outbound directions. The purpose in this study is to collect and investigate the real-time traffic characteristics based on the ramp junction influence areas of the urban freeway connected with the Busan port, compare and analyze the traffic characteristic relationship for each lane within the ramp junction influence areas, and finally assess and suggest the optimal capacity for each lane within the ramp junction influence areas.

A Novel Method for Estimating Representative Section Travel Times Using Individual Vehicle Trajectory Data (개별차량 주행정보를 이용한 차로별 구간대표통행시간 산출기법)

  • This study proposes a methodology for estimating representative section travel times using individual vehicle travel information under the ubiquitous transportation environment (UTE). A novel approach is to substantialize a concept of dynamic node-links in processing trajectory data. Also, grouping vehicles was conducted to obtain more reliable travel times representing characteristics of individual vehicle travels. Since the UTE allows us to obtain higher accuracy of vehicle positions, travel times for each lane can be estimated based on the proposed methodology. Evaluation results show that less than 10% of mean absolute percentage error was achievable with 20% of probe vehicle rate. It is expected that outcome of this study is useful for providing more accurate and reliable traffic information services.

A Study on the Warrant of Permitted Left-Turning Movements based on the Korean Highway Capacity Manual (도로용량편람에 근거한 비보호좌회전 준거에 관한 연구)

  • 국내의 도로용량편람에 근거한 좌회전 신호의 선택기준은 4방향 접근로 각각의 방향별 교통량, 좌회전 전용차로의 유무, 차로수 등의 수많은 요인들을 통해 결정된다. 이 요인들은 각각의 특성에 따라 좌회전 신호의 선택기준에 미치는 영향력이 다르며 그 영향력의 크기에 따라 변수를 결정해야 한다. 그러나 국내에서 사용되고 있는 대부분의 좌회전 신호의 선택기준은 이러한 검토 없이 해당도로의 한 방향 좌회전 교통량과 이와 마주보며 진행하는 직진 교통량, 차로수만을 기준으로 결정되고 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 국내 도로용량편람의 알고리즘을 이용하여 좌회전 신호의 선택기준에 영향을 주는 주요 요인을 밝히고, 이 결과를 이용하여 임계좌회전 교통량 (비 보호좌회전 신호로 신호교차로의 운영효율을 극대화 할 수 있는 최대 좌회전 교통량)을 제시함으로서 비 보호 좌회전 준거를 설정하고자 하였다. 본 연구에 의한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 좌회전 신호의 선택기준에 영향을 주는 주요요인은 해당도로의 좌회전 교통량, 대향직진 교통량, 차로수, 교차도로의 교통량과 차로수이며, 이 요인들 중에서 해당도로의 차로수가 좌회전 신호의 선택기준에 가장 큰 영향을 미치는 것으로 분석되었다. 그러나, 비 보호좌회전은 일반적으로 2차로에서 운영되므로 보편적인 상황에서의 비 보호좌회전 신호의 선택기준은 해당도로의 좌회전 교통량. 대향직진 교통량 및 교차도로의 교통량에 좌우된다. 둘째, 대향직진 교통량이 커질수록 임계좌회전 교통량은 감소하는 것으로 분석되었다. 셋째. 교차도로의 교통량이 커질수록 임계좌회전 교통량은 감소하는 것으로 분석되었다.
