It happens that the fuel is not injected when the driver doesn't push the acceleration pedal of vehicle with engine speed higher than 1,500rpm above the mid range of vehicle speed. This is called "fuel-cut function" and almost every modern vehicle is equipped with this function. This is activated frequently on the downhill area of highway and the quantity of vehicle-exhausted $CO_2$ gas can be zero on this area. With this fuel-cut function on the test highway, $CO_2$ gas from passenger car(2,000cc engine volume) can be reduced up to 4%. The fuel-cut function with CRUISE made in company AVL is simulated to find the most effective driving pattern on the downhill area. By simulating with CRUISE software, it is found that the lower limit of vehicle speed for fuel-cut should be raised to improve the fuel economy on the steeper downhill road. The fuel economy can be most economical when fuel-cut driving and reacceleration are completed on the section of downhill road.

Vehicle dynamic states used in various advanced driving safety systems are influenced by road geometry. Among the road geometry information, the vehicle pitch angle influenced by road slope and acceleration-deceleration is essential parameter used in pose estimation including the navigation system, advanced adaptive cruise control and others on sag road. Although the road slope data is essential parameter, the method measuring the parameter is not commercialized. The digital map including the road geometry data and high-precision DGPS system such as DGPS(Differential Global Positioning System) based RTK(Real-Time Kinematics) are used unusually. In this paper, low-cost cascade extended Kalman filter(CEKF) based road slope estimation method is proposed. It use cascade two EKFs. The EKFs use several measured vehicle states such as yaw rate, longitudinal acceleration, lateral acceleration and wheel speed of the rear tires and 3 D.O.F(Degree Of Freedom) vehicle dynamics model. The performance of proposed estimation algorithm is evaluated by simulation based on Carsim dynamics tool and T-car based experiment.

The ubiquitous transportation system environments make it possible to collect each vehicle's position and velocity data and to perform more sophisticated traffic flow management at the individual vehicle or platoon level through vehicle to vehicle (V2V) and vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) communication. It is necessary to develop a traffic flow management scheme to take advantage of the ubiquitous transportation system environments. This paper proposes an algorithm to advise the optimal speed for each vehicle according to the traffic flow condition. The algorithm aims to stabilize the traffic flow by advising the equilibrium speed to the vehicles speeding or crawling under freely flowing condition. And it aims to prevent or at least alleviate the shockwave propagation by advising the optimal speed that should dampen the speed drop under critical flow conditions. This paper builds a simulation testbed and performs some simulation experiments for the proposed algorithm. The proposed algorithm shows the expected results in terms of travel time reduction and congestion alleviation.

In this study, a practical evaluation technique to detect the deterioration of railroad lines by means of train performance and track geometry measures is suggested. A train that has a specific performance and is running the straight line can make minimum travel time (ideal time). But the actual travel time will be increased by the track geometry and various speed limitations. By comparing these travel times, we can easily define the degree of line deterioration. This method does not require complex vehicle performance measures and/or specifications that exceed those of typical Train Performance Simulations (TPS). For this reason, ease of use is ensured and the results are similar to those obtained by running a TPS for practical evaluations.
A self-driving car is an autonomous vehicle capable of fulfilling the main transportation capabilities of a traditional car. It must be capable of sensing its environment and navigating without human input. In this paper, we design the agent that can simulate these self-driving cars and develop a prototype for it. To do this, we analyze the requirements for the self-driving car, and then the agent is designed to be suitable for traditional multi-agent system. The key point of the design is that agents move along the steering forces only. The prototype of the designed agent was implemented by using Unity 3D. From simulation results using the prototype, movements of the agents were very realistic. However, in the case of increasing the number of the agent the performance was seriously degraded, and so the alternatives of the problem were suggested.
A bimodal low-floor tram is designed to provide the flexibility of bus and the punctuality of trains together to the passengers. The propulsion equipment of the bimodal tram is a series hybrid type using a set of CNG engine generator and Li-polymer battery. The present paper describes the specifications of the propulsion system in the bimodal tram which was drawn by a desirable driving cycle. In addition, it shows how the propulsion system of the bimodal tram can be controlled. With using a computer simulation tool of hybrid vehicles, ADVISOR, the performance of the bimodal tram was verified.

A lane change maneuver which has a high driver cognitive workload and skills sometimes leads to severe traffic accidents. In this study, the Advanced Lane Change Assist System (ALCAS) was developed to assist with the automatic lane changes in merging sections which is mainly based on an automatic control algorithm for detecting an available gap, determining the Optimal Lane Change Start Point (OLCSP) in various traffic conditions, and positioning the merging vehicle at the OLCSP safely by longitudinal automatic controlling. The analysis of lane change behavior and modeling of fundamental lane change feature were performed for determining the default parameters and the boundary conditions of the algorithm. The algorithm was composed of six steps with closed-loop. In order to confirm the algorithm performance, numerical scenario tests were performed in various surrounding vehicles conditions. Moreover, feasibility of the developed system was verified in microscopic traffic simulation(VISSIM 5.3 version). The results showed that merging vehicles using the system had a tendency to find the OLCSP readily and precisely, so improved merging performance was observed when the system was applied. The system is also effective even during increases in vehicle volume of the mainline.

This paper describes the developments to improve the feeling and safety of the remote control system of unmanned vehicles. Generally, in the case of the remote control systems, a joystick-type device or a simple steering-wheel are used. There are many cases, in which there are operations without considering the feedback to users and driving feel. Recently, as the application area of the unmanned vehicles has been extended, the problems caused by not considering the feedback are emphasized. Therefore, the need for a force feedback-haptic control arises to solve these problems. In this study, the force feedback-haptic control algorithm considering the vehicle parameters is proposed. The vehicle parameters include first the state variables of dynamics, such as the body side-slip angle (${\beta}$) and yawrate (${\gamma}$), and second, the parameters representing the driving situations. Force feedback-haptic control technology consists of the algorithms for general and specific situations, and considers the situation transition process. To verify the algorithms, a simulator was constructed using the vehicle dynamics simulation tool with CAN communication environment. Using the simulator, the feasibility of the algorithms was verified in various scenarios.

In this paper, engine clutch engagement shock is analyzed during the mode change of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. Multi-driving mode includes the EV (electric vehicle) mode, HEV (hybrid electric vehicle) mode, and engine operating mode. Depending on the mode change, the engine clutch is either engaged or disengaged. The magnitude of shock during clutch engagement is very important because it impacts vehicle acceleration and clutch synchronization speed, which affects ride comfort substantially. The performance simulator of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles was developed using MATLAB/Simulink. The simulation results show that the mode change control algorithm is necessary for minimizing shock during clutch engagement.
