This study conducted a 3-stage survey and simulation experiment to identify the impact of vehicle platoons on car-following behavior of manually-driven vehicles. Vehicle maneuvering data obtained from driving simulations was statistically analyzed based on three measures including average speed, acceleration noise, and offset to represent the deviation of lateral movements. Results indicate that MV drivers tended to have psychological burden while driving in automated vehicle platooning environments, which resulted in different vehicle maneuvers. It is expected that the outcome of this study would be useful fundamentals in developing various traffic operations strategies for managing mixed traffic stream consisting of MVs and autonomous vehicles.
This study developed a methodology that can reflect more realistic traffic flow to understand platoons on highways. The understanding of the phenomenon nay secure highway safety and authoritative credibility in highway planning. In this study platoons generated by 'random effects' of cars are modeled, and this model is validated using a real data set acquired from the Jayu Expressway in Kyonggi Province, Korea.

In this paper, we implemented community driving system for auto-vehicles as a preceding research of drone's community flight. We used ultrasonic sensors in order to measure the distance between vehicles, and designed each vehicles to maintain specific distance to each other, by making the following vehicle to stop moving when the distance is closed to less than 20cm, to start moving when the distance increases to more than 30cm. We have also designed vehicle to accelerate until the distance is closed to 30cm when they are apart for more than 40cm due to contingencies during driving.

To improve traffic congestion, reduce fuel consumption, and improve the stability of truck operations, truck platooning, in which several trucks are organized in a single platoon, is being actively researched globally. Compared to the operation of a single truck, the operation of a truck platoon requires more caution before the actual operation because an accident of one vehicle in the platoon can lead to an accident with all the vehicles in the platoon. Therefore, this study examined the types of trucks and cargo suitable for truck platooning to prevent safety accidents. The review showed that a closed-van-type truck is appropriate for truck platooning to prevent falling objects during driving. In the case of cargo types, it is necessary to exclude liquids and dangerous goods defined in related laws from truck platooning.
Vehicle platooning through wireless communication and automated driving technology has become realized. Platooning is a technique in which several vehicles travel at regular intervals while maintaining a minimum safety distance. Truck platooning is of keen interest because it contributes to preventing truck crashes and reducing vehicle emissions, in addition to the increase in truck flow capacity. However, it should be noted that interactions between vehicle platoons and adjacent manually-driven vehicles (MV) significantly give an impact on the performance of traffic flow. In particular, when vehicles entering from on-ramp attempt to merge into the mainstream of freeway, proper interactions by adjusting platoon size and inter-platoon spacing are required to maximize traffic performance. This study developed a methodology for establishing operational strategies for truck platoonings on freeway on-ramp areas. Average speed and conflict rate were used as measure of effectiveness (MOE) to evaluate operational efficiency and safety. Microscopic traffic simulation experiments using VISSIM were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of various platooning scenarios. A decision making process for selecting better platoon operations to satisfy operations and safety requirements was proposed. It was revealed that a platoon operating scenario with 50m inter-platoon spacing and the platoon consisting of 6 vehicles outperformed other scenarios. The proposed methodology would effectively support the realization of novel traffic management concepts in the era of automated driving environments.

This paper analyzes the performance limit of WAVE system for the platooning service requirements which is referred from the de facto standards. The performance of the packet error rate and mean delay as key parameters in the wireless communication systems should be satisfied to provide safety to the platooning vehicles. The test scenarios are conducted by considering the following vehicle groups: platooning vehicles, vehicles within a hop distance and vehicles within two hop distance( called hidden node vehicles). The models of packet error rate and delay deals with the topology of aforementioned vehicle groups, vehicle speed and communication range. The numerical results are obtained in terms of packet size, packet arrival rate and data transmission rate. Finally, this paper suggests the robust range of packet error rate and delay for the WAVE system to provide the platooning vehicle service.
Vehicle platooning in automated connected vehicle systems is an efficient transportation operation model that not only significantly reduces computational load and networking overhead of the central system but also improves traffic flow. For efficient platoon group management, it is important to maintain the platoon group size appropriately and to control the merge request of a new vehicle and other group member vehicle. In this paper, we present a merger control scheme that accepts or rejects merge requests based on the current group size and the priority of vehicles. The proposed method was analyzed and validated through mathematical models based on Markov chains. Performance evaluation shows that the proposed scheme properly manages the load of the central system.

The platooning refers to a form in which one or more following vehicles along the path of the leading vehicle(directly driven by the driver) drive in one platoon using V2V, V2I communication and vehicle-mounted sensor. Platooning has emerged in line with the increasing demand for cargo volume and advanced transportation logistics systems, and is expected to have effects such as increasing capacity, reducing labor costs, and reducing fuel consumption. However, compared to general passenger cars, research on autonomous driving of trucks and verification of their effects are insufficient. Therefore, in this study, meta-analysis was conducted on the theme of the effect of truck platooning, and the results of existing studies related to platooning effects were integrated into one reliable, generalized, and objective summary estimate. In conclusion, it was analyzed that the introduction of truck platooning would have an effect of 13.93% increase in capacity, 38.76% decrease in conflict, and 8.13% decrease in fuel consumption.
