  • The surface and bottom water were sampling in ten stations of the coastal area of Chagwi-Do, Jeju Island, which was repeated 6 times in several different months(September, November, 2004 and March, May, August, and November 2005) in order to examine the physico-chemical characteristics of water. The temperature varied by approximately $16^{\circ}C$, ranging somewhere between 1$12.2^{\circ}C$ and $28.9^{\circ}C$. Specifically, the temperature of bottom water was $13^{\circ}C$, implying the emergence of low temperature water. The salinity ranged from 30.2 to 34.9%o, and the lowest salinity in August may be attributable to the effect of land-based water. N/P ratio, the growth factor of phytoplankton, ranged from 5 to 76, which varied depending on the season and station. The ratio, however, was over 22 on the average, suggesting that phosphate phosphorus is an factor that restricts the growth of phytoplankton. TOC in the concentration of organic carbon ranged between $92.5{\mu}M$ and $438.3{\mu}M$, and the mean was $217{\mu}M$. DOC ranged from $82.5{\mu}M$ to $299.2{\mu}M$, and the mean was $130{\mu}M$. The ratio of DOC/POC was 60% with abundant dissolved organic carbon.

  • Based on the Boussinesq wave model, the wave distribution in the Chagui-Do sea area in Jeju was simulated by applying the directional irregular waves at an incident boundary. The time and spatial variations of monthly mean wave height and period were investigated, which aims to provide basic information on optimal sites for wave power generation. The grid size and time interval of the Boussinesq wave model were validated by examining wave distributions around a surface piercing wall, fixed at sea bottom with a constant slope. Except for the summer season, the significant wave height is dominated by wind waves and appears to be relatively high at the north sea of Chagui-Do, which is open to the ocean, while it is remarkably reduced at the rear sea of Chagui-Do because of its blocking effect on incident waves. In the summer, the significant wave height is higher at the south sea, and it is dominated by the swell waves, which is contributed by the strong south-west wind. The magnitude of significant wave height is the largest in the winter and the lowest in the spring. Annual average of the significant wave height is distinctively high at the west sea close to the Chagui-Do coast, due to a steep variation of water depth and corresponding wave focusing effect. The seasonal and spatial distribution of the wave period around Chagui-Do sea reveals very similar characteristics to the significant wave height. It is suggested that the west sea close to the Chagui-Do coast is the mast promising site for wave power generation.

  • The objective of this study was to search the attributes and calculate the weights among the attributes considered to choose the best thing of various tourism resources focused on marine ranch of Chagwido in Jeju region. Through this analysis, this research provides the information for establishing development plan of Chagwido. To achieve this goal, this study analyzed the priority of experience tourism through the experts' survey with AHP methodology. The result showed that ecological experience (30.6%), fishing activities (23.1%), release of fish seed (14.9%) and culture experience (14.9%) among various tourism resources in marin ranch of Chagwido were in order of importance. Thus ecological experiences, activities related to fishing facilities and programs should be introduced in order to develop the marine ranch of Chagwido.

  • Macrobenthos were collected in each season by SCUBA diving to investigate the benthic faunal assemblages in the coastal water of Chagwido from September 2004 to August 2005. A total of 201 macrobenthos identified, 74 species (37.2%) of Mollusca were found; 43 species of Arthropoda (19.2%); 34 species of Cnidaria (16.7%) and others including 18 species of Porifera (9.8%). Mean density and biomass were estimated to be 455 individual/$m^2$ and 15,565.0 $g/m^2$, respectively. Whereas annelids was predominant in biomass (1,558.8 g), gastropods were the most dominant faunal group in terms of abundance (5,391 individuals) and the number of species. The dominant species were Trochus sacellus, Batillus cornutus, Pagurus gracilipes, and Cantharus cecillei. The seasonal variation of the number of species and individual Mollusca and Arthropoda was observed. There was a slow increase in spring, the peak in summer, and a slow decrease in autumn and winter. The dominance index was the highest in Gosan and lowest in Yongdang. The biodiversity indice (H') were 1.760-3.497 in each station. Mean biodiversity index was 2.858 (H'). The diversity index, the eveness index (E'), and the dominance index (R) were 3.218-3.743, 0.648-0.720, 17.690-22.826, respectively, in each station.

  • The sedimentary environment and sediment were surveyed at the West-Northern site of Chagwi-do nearby Jeju Island for the design of the embedded suction anchor system of 10 MW-class floating wave-offshore wind hybrid power generation system. According to the classification scheme of Chough et al.[2002], the echo type of the seismic profiles using the chirp III was classified. As a results, the center and west-northern area of survey site were proved to be type I-3 where subbottom layer with thickness 5~15 m exists under the flat seafloor. On the other hands, the east-southern area were regarded to be type I-1, I-2 and III-1 where seafloor reflection is much stronger than type I-3. Also, the physical tests (unit weight, moisture content, grain size, liquid limit, specific gravity) were performed with samples taken from 8 fixed locations. It is found that the sand (SP), the sand blended with silt (SM) and the mixture of SP-SM are distributed uniformly on the survey area.

The dominant species isolated from the coastal area of Chagwi-Do were identified to be Vibrio spp., Pseudoalteromonas spp. Psuedomonas spp, Bacillus spp., Alteromonas spp., Aeromonas spp., Psychrobacter spp., and Flavobacterium spp.

  • Two specimens of Apogon unicolor (81.0 mm and 96.3 mm in standard length) belonging to the family Apogonidae were firstly collected by using a gill net from the southwestern coastal waters of Jejudo Island, Korea in July 2013. These species are characterized by having 26 lateral line pores, a first dorsal fin with 6 spines, 2+1+8=11 developed gill rackers, posterior margin of preopercle serrated, without markings and spots on the body. Our specimens are well-matched in their morphological and molecular characteristics with Apogon unicolor previously reported. Thus, we newly add this species to the Korean fish fauna and propose its new Korean name "Jin-hong-eol-ge-bi-neul" because the overall fish body and fins reveal deep red colors.
