  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a metastrategic activity on the development of student variable controlling abilities. Three groups of seventh graders at a middle-school in the City of Daegu participated in this study: a metastrategy activity group (ME), a problem-solving activity group (PR), and a control group (CO). The ME group was given metastrategy activity worksheets, which required students to monitor, control, and evaluate variable control strategies in a specified situation. The PR group was given problem-solving activity worksheets, which were needed to solve problems in various situations. The results were seen as follows. First, the metastrategy activity group showed better achievement (p<.05) and a longer standing effect (p<.01) than the other groups in the development of variable control ability. The problem-solving activity group was more effective than the control group (p<.05) in the development of variable controlled ability, but there was no lasting effect of the acquired ability. Second, the metastrategic activity group was more effective than the problem-solving activity group in finding fixed variables (p<.01), but not as effective in uncovering independent variables. What is not transferred to the development of the ability to find dependent variables.

  • The purpose of this study was to research the effects of socio-demographic factors and values in each group on satisfaction with life by categorizing the activity types of the elderly into volunteer work and economic activities. The subjects of this study were 60 years an old higher. The questionnaires were categorized depending on activity types and collected. The voluntary work group consisted of 201 people (76 males, 36.8% and 125 females, 62.2%), The economic activity group consisted of 219 people (127 males, 58.0% and 92 females, 42.0%). The SPSS 14.0 Windows program was used to analyze data. Frequency, average, standard deviation, factor analysis, Pearson correlation coefficient, t-test, One-Way ANOVA analysis, and hierarchical multiple linear regression were analyzed. The major findings of this study indicate that the elderly in the voluntary work group have a high collectivism value, higher income earned by performing economic activities, and good cognitive health affected by a high satisfaction with life. From these research results, it was proved that a collectivism value is a common factor that affects satisfaction with life in both of the economic activity group. Those who were older had a traditional collectivism value. The voluntary work group showed a stronger collectivism value and higher satisfaction with life than the economic activity group. Thus, the diverse types of voluntary work should be developed and a systematic system should be established as methods for improving quality of life and satisfaction.

  • The objective of this study is to examine whether there are differences in participation in social activities and the effects of social activity types on the levels of happiness of the Korean older adults by age groups. The 5th wave(2014) of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (KLoSA) was used and a total of 3,273 elderly were selected from the 5th wave, who were 65 years old and older and who were not living with their offsprings. Chi-square test, ANOVA, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis were used. The rate of participation in economic activities declined with age and the levels of participation in leisure activities was higher in the young-old group in comparison to the middle- and the oldest- old groups. The levels of participation in family activities was higher in the middle- and the oldest-old groups in comparison to the young-old group. Socializing activities and religious activities measured by the frequencies of activities were not significantly different among the age groups. The results of a regression analysis of social activity types and their effects on happiness by age groups are the followings: 1) Leisure, socializing, religious, and family activities all (with the exception of economic activities) significantly affected the level of happiness of older persons in the young-old group. 2) However, only socializing and family activities in the middle-old age group, and only family activities in oldest-old group, had a statistically significant impact on the levels of happiness. These results support that the rates of participation in the five types of social activities and their effects on the levels of happiness were different by age groups. The implication of this study was to report that needs and the interests of older individuals are different by age groups based on empirical evidences.

  • This study aimed to suggest leisure activities and policy-level support in the light of the characteristics and needs among the elderly by examining constraint factors of leisure activities among the elderly. Data of 3887 elderly with the age of 65 and above with economic burden and health problems from the 6th Korean Retirement and Income study were used for the statistical analyses. Hierarchical linear models were tested by entering factors stepswise; demographic factors(age, gender, marriage status, single household, region, living expenses, health status) in the first step, leisure factors(leisure time, leisure motivation) in the second step, and lastly leisure activity factors(desired leisure activities, undesired leisure activities) in the third step. The results were as follows: First, major factors that constrict leisure activities of the elderly were financial burden and health problems. Second, there were significant differences among three(financial constraint, health constraint, and financial and health constraint) groups. Financial constraint group was the highest in the level of leisure satisfaction but leisure time was the shortest. The major reason to do leisure activities of the financial constraint group was to keep relationships with families and friends. In terms of desired leisure activities, health constraint group wanted resting, financial constraint group wanted hobbies and entertainment, and the financial-and-health constraint group wanted social activities. Third, financial constraint group demonstrated higher levels of leisure activity satisfaction when they wanted to take care of pets or gardens; however, they showed lower levels of leisure activity satisfaction when they wanted to domestic trips for desired leisure activities. In case of health constraint group, they demonstrated lower levels of leisure activity satisfaction whether or not they wanted resting like watching TV or listening to the radio. And, the showed higher levels of leisure activity satisfaction when they wanted social activities such as participation in religion or social gathering organizations. For the financial-and-health constraint group, whereas they showed lower levels of leisure activity satisfaction when they wanted walking around or watching TV, and domestic trips for desired leisure activities, they demonstrated higher levels of leisure activity satisfaction when they wanted entertainment doing the game of go, or chess, and hobbies like hiking and social activities. Practice and policy level suggestions to offer leisure activities that meet the needs of the elderly were made based on the study results.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare junior high school students' conceptual changes about force and motion and their interest in science between a group with the instruction including sports experiential learning activities and a group with traditional instruction. In addition, for a group with sports experiential learning activities, students' conceptual changes and interest were examined according to the degree of their sports-experience before the instruction. The subject was 7th-grade students(N=82), and they were divided into two groups: experimental group and control group. The conceptual changes were positive in both groups. In the multiple choice questions the experimental group students(20.0%) were more positively changed than the control group students(17.2%). The number of students who responded with the right explanation increased 26.7% in the experimental group and 10.4% in the control group. The interest of the control group was significantly increased in the topic dimension(p<0.05). The interest of the experimental group was significantly increased in the experiential activity and the communicative activity(p<0.05). Students who had much sports-experience showed the most positive changes. Moreover the interest of these students was especially increased in internal motive, receptive activity, experiential activity, and communicative activity.

  • This study focused on the use of student assessment activities to investigate the impact on reflective thinking in Argument-based Inquiry. The participants of the study were 166 10th grade students (six classes). Over one semester, students participated in five ABI programs that we developed. The experimental group (84 students) was taught Argument-Based Inquiry with students' self and peer assessment activities. The comparative group (82 students) was taught without the activities. We analyzed students' reflective writing to investigate how the student assessment activities influenced the students' reflective thinking. We also used the interviews and surveys to examine the validity of student assessment activities. According to analysis of the reflective writing, the experimental group had a significantly higher mean score than the comparative group in the 3rd and 5th writing. The ratio of students who showed a metacognitive level of reflection with regard to analysis of inquiry process, understanding of learning, and change of thinking increased in both groups, but the experimental group's ratio was higher than the comparative group's. The result of analysis of the reflective practice showed that the ratio of the experimental group's students who reached the metacognitive level of reflection in their writing increased, while the comparative group's decreased. Therefore, we conclude that student assessment activities can create a learning environment that facilitates student participation, increases the students' engagement in the learning process, and can be used as a tool to scaffold learning.

  • This research investigated how the participation of various social activities affects cognitive function in middle-aged and elderly population. To examine the relation between the participation of various social activities and cognitive function, we used data from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Social activities were classified into four types as religious ritual, leisure, public association and ascriptive association activities, and MMSE-K score was used to measure cognitive function. Results from multiple regression analyses after adjusting for socio-economic status and health status show that the participation in religious and leisure activities have positive effects on cognitive function in middle-aged and elderly population. Participation in leisure activities in middle-aged male group helps preserve cognitive function, and leisure activity and ritual activity are significantly related to cognitive function in middle-aged female group. Meanwhile the participation in religious and leisure activities have positive effects on cognitive function in elderly male and female group. Based on these findings, we suggest that various programs to support the participation of elderly population in social activities should be developed for healthy life for the elderly.
