Fish assemblage structure in a sheltered shallow water in the Southern Coast of Korea was examined monthly. Sampling was conducted in Doam Bay using a beam trawl between March 2001 and February 2001. A total of 53 fish species from 33 families were caught. Pinkgray goby (Chaeturichthys hexanema), ponyfish (Leiognathus nuchalis) and yellowfin goby (Acanthogobius favimanus) were the most frequent species, comprised 67.4% of the total numbers captured. Snailfish (Liparis tanakai), yellowfin goby (Acanthogobius flavimanus) and pinkgray goby (Chaeturichthys hexanema) represented 50.8% of the total biomass. While total abundance (number of individuals) and biomass were high in autumn and winter, species richness (number of species) and diversity were high in spring. Cluster analysis, based on monthly abundance data of the 14 most frequent species, showed that the species were separated into three different groups. Group A composed of pinkgray goby, yellowfin goby, robust tonguefish (Cynoglossus robustus) and scaly hairfin anchovy (Setipinna taty), which were year-round residents, and devil flathead (Onigocia spinosa), Red dragonet (Repomucenus lunatus) and ponyfish, which were abundant in autumn, group B surmullet (Upeneus japonicus), hairtail (Trichiurus lepturus) and gaff-topsail goby (Cryptocentrus filifer), which were abundant in summer, and group C grassfish (Liparis tanakai), spotted velvefish (Erisphex pottii), chameleon goby (Tridentiger trigonocephalus) and Richardson dragonet (Repomucenus richardsonii), which were abundant in winter and spring. A seasonal homogeneity of fish assemblage indicates that overall fish assemblage in Dom Bay is largely controlled by year-round residents.
Metacercariae of the genus Stictodora encysted in the head tissue of Acanthogobius navimanus (the gobies) caught at Sachun-gun, Kyongnam Province, were identified to be Stictodora Zari Yamaguti, 1939 (Trematoda: Heterophyidae), a new parasite fauna in Korea. The metacercariae were 0.39∼,0.43 mm by 0.32∼0.35 mm in size, long elliptical, and with a thin and transparent cyst wall. Total 200 metacercariae were collected from 50 gobies. In order to obtain adult worms two kittens and a Puppy were infected each with 34∼100 metacercariae, and total 33 adults were recovered between the day 4 and day 8 post-infection. The S. sari adults measured 0.95∼1.18 mm long and 0.26∼0.32 mm wide and the eggs in uteri 0.028∼0.033 mm by 0.017∼0.020 mm. The most characteristic morphological feature of these flukes was the presence of a gonotyl and gonotyl spines arranged in two groups; densely crowded group of 30~40 spines and linearly-arranged one of 30∼40 spines, together of which made a comma(or reversed comma) shape along the lateral margin of the gonotyl. It has been proved by this study that 5. sari is distributed in southern coasts of Korea.
A study on the community structure of macrobenthos was accomplished around Kadugdo, a south coast of Korea. Sampling was performed bimonthly using a Smith-McIntyre grab ($0.05 m^2$) at ten stations from January to November, 1998. A total of 260 species was sampled with mean density of $1,729 ind./m^2$and biomass of $154.7 gwwt./m^2$during the study periods. Of these species, there were 96 species of arthropods ($37.0\%$), 89 species of annelids ($34.2\%$), 45 species of molluscs ($17.3\%$) and 30 species of others ($11.5\%$). Annelids were density-dominant faunal group with a mean density of $1,263 ind./m^2$which occupied $73.0\%$ of the total individual of benthic animals. Molluscs were represented as biomass-dominant faunal group with a mean biomass of $99.5 gwwt./m^2$ ($64.3\%$ of total biomass). The density-dominant species were a bivalvia Theora fragilis ($194 ind./m^2$) and five species of polychaetes, Lumbrineris longifolia ($177 ind./m^2$), Chaetozone setosa ($150 ind./m^2$), Sternaspis scutata ($116 ind./m^2$), Sigambra tentaculata ($106 ind./m^2$) and Hemipodus yenourensis ($94 ind./m^2$). And major biomass-dominant species was a bivalvia Ruditapes philippinarum ($45.6 gwwt./m^2$). Clustering analysis showed that the study area could be divided into two station groups and three stations: southwestern part of Kadugdo effected on Chinhae Bay, fisheries farming area and eastern part of Kadugdo effected on Nakdong River estuary.
An investigation on the benthic polychaete community in Youngil Bay was conducted during four seasons of 1991. Polychaetes. the dominant macrofaunal group occupying 71.3% in total macro-faunal density, comprised a total of 72 species with a mean density of 1,485 indiv. m/SUP -2/. The highest species number of 54 spp. and density of 3,207 undiv. m/SUP -2/ was recorded in summer, while the lowest in autumn. The most abundant species was Spiophanes nombyx (37.5%), followed by Pseudopolydora sp.(8.4%), Lumbrineris longifolia(7.0%), Madden cristata(6.5%), Polydora ciliata(4.9%) and so on. Maldane cristata was dominated in winter, Polydora ciliata in spring and Spiophanes bombyx in summer and autumn. The density and species number of Polychaetes were high in the southeastern area of Youngil Bay, and poor near the mouth of Hyoungsan River. Based on the species composition, study area was divided into three regions. Each region sustained its specific benthic faunal assemblage; Maldane-Praxillella assemblage from the middle to the southeastern region of Youngil Bay, Spiophanes-Nephtys assemblage in the northwestern region, and Pseudopolydora-Polydora-Capitella assemblage from the mouth of Hyoungsan River to Pohang Hobour. Maldane Praxillella assemblage showed the highest species number of 55 spp.. and the highest species diversity and species richness indices. Spiophanes-Nephtys assemblage had the highest density of 2,675 indiv. m/SUP -2/ and the highest dominance index because of the predominance of Spiophanes bombyx with a density of 2,073 indiv. m/SUP -2/. Pseudopolydora-Polydora-Capitella assemblage was found in the polluted area and it was a specific assemblage mainly composed of the dominance of organic pollution indicator species. The dominant Polychaetes were Pseudopolydora sp., Polydora ciliata, Capitella capitata, and Dorvillea sp.

In order to establish fundamental data for stream restoration and environmental flow, we investigated fish fauna, community and physical habitat conditions in the Dal Stream of Han River Basin. Field monitoring including fish sampling was conducted from September 2008 to October 2009. A total number of fish caught in the 5 sites was 2,080 representing 9 families 35 species, and 19 species (54.3%) including Acheilognathus koreensis and Iksookimia koreensis were Korean endemic species during the study period. The most frequently found species in number was pale chub (Zacco platypus, 25.7%, n = 632) followed by Coreoleuciscus splendidus (18.0%, n = 375) and Z. koreanus (13.0%, n = 272). The lower reach of Dal Stream was more abundance of species, high diversity, evenness and richness, and lower dominance index than those of the upper reach. According to the dendrogram established at 0.63 level of similarity rate, sampling stations were divided into 2 groups. Most of upper streams in Korea consist of riffles and runs that are repeatedly followed by another one. However, stream channelization and leveling have caused reduction of habitat diversity. Therefore, it is necessary to make an effort on stream rehabilitation with evaluation of physical habitat condition by indicator species in order to maintain biodiversity and perform ecological restoration.

This study was carried out to investigate the differences in sedimentary environments and benthic polychaete communities between farming grounds and natural habitats (non-farming ground) in Gamak Bay. Sampling stations of natural habitats were evenly distributed in the entire bay. And mussel farm, oyster farm and ark-shell farm were selected as farming grounds. Dominant sedimentary facies was mud in most sampling stations of farming grounds and natural habitats. However organic contents were higher in the farming grounds than natural habitats of the bay. The species number and mean density of polychaetous community in the natural habitats were greater than those from the farming grounds. Lumbrineris longifolia, known as potential organic enrichment indicator species, was first dominant species both in farming grounds and natural habitats of the bay. However, the next dominant species consisted of different species between two benthic habitats. As a result of community analysis using cluster analysis and nMDS, the natural habitats were divided into several station groups, but most of stations in farming grounds were clustered into one group. Pearson' correlation analysis and PCA showed high relationships between sedimentary environmental factors and benthic polychaetous community in natural habitats, but low or no relationships in farming grounds. That means benthic polychaetous community established in farming ground was under unusual condition such as high input of organic matter. Thus it is necessary to improve the benthic environmental quality of the farming grounds as well as the north-western inner part in Gamak Bay through long-term monitoring efforts.

This study investigated the mesozooplankton community and the related environmental factors in the Nakdong River Estuary in May and early October shortly after passage of the typhoon "DUJUAN" in 2015. The mesozooplankton community was dominated by barnacle nauplii, foraminiferans, and Noctiluca scintillans, and the environmental characteristics were characterized by freshwater inflow through the Nakdong River barrage, the intrusion of warm currents, and the effect of typhoon passage in October. In May, cladocerans, such as Evadne nordmanni and Podon polyphemoides, as indicator species of brackish water, prevailed throughout the study area. The surface salinity was lowest on the inner side of the barrier-islands and increased gradually to the outer side during the study. The average concentration of total suspended solids in October was higher than that in May, while the averaged concentration of nitrate and chlorophyll-a in May was higher than those in October. On the other hand, there was no temporal difference in the total averaged abundance of mesozooplankton. In contrast, the distributional pattern of the mesozooplankton community was associated with the salinity gradient in both seasons. These results suggest that the temporal difference of the mesozooplankton community depended on the extent of freshwater inflow by barrage opening, the intrusion intensity of warm currents, and typhoon passage in the Nakdong River estuary in 2015.

Species composition and seasonal variation of fish assemblages in Sargassum beds in Gamak Bay was determined using fish samples collected monthly by a surrounding net from October 2008 to September 2009. A total of 21 species, 582 individuals and 5,345.1 g of fishes were collected during the study period and Perciformes accounted for 47.6 % of the total number of species. Takifugu niphobles, Engraulis japonicus and Lateolabrax japonicus predominated in number, accounting for 55 % of the total number of individuals. Higher number of species and individuals occurred in June and in September-October. Species were grouped into three by cluster analysis: A) dominant species such as Leiognathus nuchalis and Takifugu niphobles, B) fish collected mainly in spring such as Sebastes inermis, Chaenogobius heptacanthus, Pterogobius zonoleucus, Pholis nebulosa, and Trachyrhamphus serratus, and C) fish collected mainly in autumn such as Engraulis japonicus, Lateolabrax japonicus, and Hyporhamphus sajori.

Genetic differences among nine land races of Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer) were examined using RAPD markers. Land races of Korean ginseng were collected from nine regions in Korea: Cheongwon, Guesan, Geumsan, Namwon, Pochun, Yangju, Yeoncheon, Yeongju. Out of 48 RAPD primers tested, 5 primers (OPA 7, OPA 13, URP 2, URP 3 and UBC 3) produced remarkable bands which showing polymorphisms among evaluated collections. Lower levels of genetic diversity were in detected same land races than among other land races. Genetic differences within and among land races indicate heterogeneity. These results indicate that cultivated ginseng in Korea is heterogeneous. Genetic similarity matrices of RAPD profiles were generated via coefficients of variation and the data were processed by the cluster analysis (UPGMA). When 90 collections were evaluated using selected 5 primers, those were clustered to 5 and 3 subgroups. These differences in genetic variation between land races of Korean ginseng implied the potential source for further breeding of Korean ginseng.
This study was performed to know and compare the community structures of macrobenthic invertebrates of eight fishing grounds in the coastal waters of Jeju Island from September to October 2008. A total of 166 species was identified. Mollusks comprised 77 species (46.4%); Arthropods 24 (14.5%), Cnidarians 18 (10.8%); Poriferans 16 (9.6%); and the others including Echinoderms 33 (17.7%). Density and biomass were estimated to be 6,905 ind./$m^2$ and 113,100.7 gwwt/$m^2$, respectively. Gastropods was the most dominant taxon in terms of abundance (3,311 ind./$m^2$) and number of species as well, and Gastropods was predominant in biomass (55,789.2 gwwt/$m^2$). The dominant species were Omphalius pfeifferi, Astralium haematragum, Turbo cornutus, Ergalatax contraacta, Lithophaga cura, Anthocidaris crassispina, Herdmania monus in 5-15 m. Based on the cluster analysis, the study area could be divided into two station groups. The biodiversity, evenness and richness index appeared as follows: H' = 1.59-2.95, E' = 0.38-0.87, R = 3.3-10.4. The dominance index were highest in Daepo and lowest in Woljeong.
