  • In this study, basic physical tests and mechanical tests of crushed rock were performed in order to investigate the field application of crushed rock as substitute materials of sand that is commonly being used as foundation and backfill materials of sewer conduit. Particle-size distribution curve of crushed rock is similar to sand and also it is well-graded soil than common sand. Maximum dry unit weight in proctor compaction test for crushed rock is higher than the values of common sand. So we can estimate that the crushed rock has advantages in workability than sand for the backfill compaction after construction of sewer conduit. When we investigate the results of direct shear test and triaxial compression test on the crushed rock, it has a similar value of shear strength parameters to sand at the same stress state and as time goes by, it tends to increase the unconfined compression strength. But, because the strength reaches at the constant value after 6~7 days, we expect that it can absorb the lateral strain of flexible conduit well. All the above experimental results just proves that crushed rock can substitute for sand as backfill materials and foundation of sewer conduit.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of operational parameters such as dosage of magnesium and phosphate, pH, reaction time and existence crystal core for the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus in anaerobic fermentation supernatant by struvite crystallization. Optimal mole ratio of $Mg^{2+}:NH_4{^+}:PO_4{^{3-}}$ was 1.2:1.0:1.2. Under the optimal molar ratio, removal ratio and reaction rate constant of $NH_4{^+}-N$ and $PO_4{^{3-}}-P$ were 79.2, 96.8%, 0.157 and $0.344min^{-1}$, respectively. Optimal pH and reaction time were 11 and 10 minutes, respectively, in the optimal molar ratio. Residual concentration of $NH_4{^+}-N$ and $PO_4{^{3-}}-P$ showed lowest value with 1 g/L of crystal core addition. SEM analysis of struvite crystallization with crystal core showed higher crystal core growth than that of without crystal core. Struvite precipitate proved to be orthorhomic crystal structure by XRD analysis.

  • This study was performed to determine optimum conditions of batch type cultivation of Isochrysis galbana cultivated under various wavelengths of light emitting dioes (LEDs). Among LEDs used in the cultivation, white LED was found to be the most effective light source, and light intensity of 3,000Lux resulted in the most effective for the cultivation of Isochyrysis galbana. Comparison with common light source, fluorescent light, showed less effective than that with white LED. Four different air flow rates were tested to overcome shading effects due to denser cell concentration in the solution. In results, cell growth rates and maximum cell concentrations were similar regardless of air flow rates. Three times greater cell concentrations, however, were observed when air was applied.

  • Estimating the thermal conductivity of clayey soils is important for enhancing the performance of geoengineering structures in cold regions and clay barriers for nuclear waste repositories, but specimen disturbance, saturation, and heat boundary conditions of the test apparatus hinder reliable measurements of the thermal conductivity of saturated clayey soils. This paper presents the results of an experimental study carried out using modified consolidation tests with the needle probe method to measure thermal conductivity. Experimental consolidation tests with saturated kaolinite were performed to investigate the effect of effective stress and dry density on thermal conductivity for saturated kaolinite. In addition, thermal conductivity of soil particles were thoroughly investigated and experimental results were used to evaluate the accuracy of the models to predict thermal conductivity.

  • In most cases, Geotechnical Structures installed in freezing areas require extra countermeasures for reducing freeze damage. However, in terms of domestic tunnels, studies and case reports for geotechnical structures such as tunnels and retaining walls are not fluently carried out, causing lack of research about ways to decrease freeze damage. For these causes, domestic design criteria about structures does not specifically institutionalization for geotechnical structures. This research have done on-site investigation about tunnels, cut slopes and retaining walls. Also, this research includes the process of analyzing the histories of maintenance for class 1 and class 2 structures that happened in the past 40 years, studying characteristics of structure's maintenance and reinforcement in different areas with different climate. As the result, it was analyzed that domestic geotechnical structures showed need for longer maintenance and reinforcement that are located in Gangwon mountain area, Gangwon north region and Gyeonggi north region where the temperature is relatively low. This research can be concluded in need for revision of design criteria for structures located in freeze damage area.

  • The relief wells have been studied to be effective in seepage control in small dams such as agricultural dams. However, quantitative studies on the effects of the relief well are rare and there is no design standard also. To quantitatively analyze the effects of the seepage control in small dams, the research of up-lift pressure influencing the toe of dam body was conducted by seepage analysis, which investigates the behavior characteristics, according to the conditions of dam and foundation. The effect of seepage control was studied by analyzing the reduction effect of up-lift pressure at foundation ground of the toe of downstream dam slope depending on the installation of the relief well. As a result, it was found that the relief wells are effective in reducing the pore water pressure in the foundation, which can cause piping and sliding failure.

  • Granular compaction piles increase the load bearing capacity of the soft ground and reduce the settlement of foundation built on the reinforced soil. The granular compaction group piles also accelerate the consolidation of the soft ground and prevent the liquefaction caused by earthquake using the granular materials such as sand, gravel, stone etc. However, this method is one of unuseful method in Korea. In the present study, the optimum locations of granular compaction group piles using genetic algorithm are proposed. The results were shown that the bearing capacity was increased in the case concentrated on the central part of the group piles. Also, the optimum design for total weight of granular compaction group piles was carried out in consideration of the economical efficiency and parametric studies were performed to examine the effects of parameters at the design of granular compaction group piles.

  • A Series of laboratory tests were conducted to investigate the engineering characteristics for organic soil widely distributed in Yong-dong region which always makes problems in construction works. Physical characteristics of Yong-dong organic soil area were measured in terms of such categories as nature water content, organic content, specific gravity, liquid limit, and plasticity index. As a result, it was found that nature water content was $50.8^{\circ}-343.5%$, organic content 12.1-42.5%, specific gravity 1.76-2.71, liquid limit 46.6-440.2%, and plasticity index 9.2-557.2%. Also, as consolidation load increases, consolidation coefficient slightly decreases with small up and down. The ratio of secondary consolidation coefficient to compression index is 0.001-0.091 $C_a/C_c$, secondary coefficient tends to increase greatly when organic content is in the range of 11-22%.

  • The objective of this study is to determine the engineering properties of micro fine hybrid silicate grout materials that were developed recently. In this study, MSG-N type was mainly used as grout materials, and the chemical components, grain size distribution, mineral characteristics were analyzed. Moreover, the properties of active silica and ordinary portland cement acting as coagulating agent were analyzed and compared with each other. To determine the engineering properties, the bleeding test, viscosity test, coagulation test, examination with naked eye, photographing by using SEM, uniaxial compression test and in-situ application test for reclaimed ground were carried out. A series of test results showed that the strength of micro fine hybrid silicate grout materials was about twice that of ordinary sodium silicate grout materials, and alkali leakage decreased dramatically when MSG method was utilized. Especially, based on the evaluation of the application of the MSG method to field, this method would be very effective in reducing coefficient of permeability due to its excelent permeability.
