  • To meet the requirements of the Tier 4 interim regulations for off-road vehicles, emissions of particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) must be reduced by 95% and 30%, respectively, compared to current regulations. In this research, both the DPF and HPL EGR systems were investigated, with the aim of decreasing the PM and NOx emissions of a 56-kW off-road vehicle. The results of the experiments show that the DOC-DPF system is very useful for reducing PM emissions. It is also found that the back pressure is acceptable, and the rate of power loss is less than 5%. By applying the HPL EGR system to the diesel engine, the NOx emissions under low- and middle-load conditions are reduced effectively because of the high differential pressure between the turbocharger inlet and the intake manifold. The NOx emissions can be decreased by increasing the EGR rate, but total hydrocarbon (THC) emission increases because of the increased fuel consumption needed to compensate for the power loss caused by EGR and DPF.

  • The objective of this work presented here was focused on analysis of particulate matter and nitrogen oxide characteristics in ESC test mode from heavy-duty diesel engine installed on-road vehicles applicable to prime propulsion engine for marine vessels. The authors confirmed that a large quantity particulate matter were emitted in high power density condition, nitrogen oxide characteristics were dependent on exhaust gas temperature. Particulate matters were reduced by 1/100~1/1,000 times in post DPF with test modes but filtration efficiency was decreased in the engine power fluctuation. In the case of the high speed and power condition, the exhaust level of particulate matters was increased according to increment of temperature of gas flowing into DPF. The orders of magnitude for particle concentration levels from the analysis of size distribution of particulate matters of test engine was different. Both emitting nano-sized particles below 100nm regardless of DPF and non-DPF.

  • Recently, increasing usage of diesel vehicle, many countries try to reduce the pollutant materials by emission regulation standard. Particularly in our country, the supplement ration of diesel vehicle is high, and air pollution by vehicle exhaust gas is very serious. So, in study, we tested exhaust gas by various mode in-light duty diesel engine. Therefore, we can know about NOx and smoke seriousness.

  • Present study has been conducted to see the relative effects of adding N: to fuel-side and air-side on flame structure, soot formation and NOx emissions. Experiments were carried out to ascertain to what degree chemical kinetics and/or molecular transport effects can explain the differences in soot formation and NOx emission by studying laminar diffusion flames. Direct photograph was taken to see the flame structure. CARS techniques was used to get the flame temperature profiles. And spatial distribution of soot could be obtained by PLII method. CHEMKIN code was also used to estimate the global residence time to predict NOx emissions at each condition. Results from these studies indicate that fuel-side dilution is more effective than air-side dilution in view of NOx emissions. However, air-side dilution shows greater effectiveness over fuel-side dilution in soot formation. And turbulent mixing and heat transfer problems were thought to be considered in practical applications.

  • Water soluble oil was obtained from the pyrolysis of coconut waste as a biomass at $600^{\circ}C$. It was studied that the combustion characteristics of bio-emulsion fuel by mixing and emulsifying 15~20% of water soluble oil which obtained from pyrolysis of coconut waste as a biomass and MDO(marine diesel oil) as a marine fuel. Engine dynamometer was used for detecting emissions, temperature, and power. The temperature of combustion chamber was decreased because the moisture in bio-emulsion fuel deprived of heat of evaporation in combustion chamber. While combustion, micro-explosion took place in the combustion chamber by water in the bio-emulsion fuel, MDO fuel scattered to micro particles and it caused to smoke reduction. The temperature reduction of combustion chamber by using bio-emulsion fuel reduced the NOx emission. The increasing of bio-oil content caused increasing water content in bio-emulsion fuel so total calorific value was reduced. So the characteristics of power was decreased in proportion to using the increasing amount of bio-emulsion fuel. Heavy oil as a marine fuel exhausts a lot of smoke and NOx. We expect that we can reduce the exhaust gas of marine engine such as smoke and NOx by using of bio-emulsion fuel as a marine fuel.

  • The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) with diesel particulate filter(DPF) on heavy duty diesel engine. The exhaust gas was recirculated to the intake manifold after the smoke was eliminated in the DPF, The major conclusions of this research are i)at each engine speed EGR ratio was able to 60% maximum ii) the amount of NOx emissions was decreased to 90% at high engine load and to more than 60% at low engine load and iii) the amout of NOx emissions was increased to five times according to the increase of engine load but the effect of EGR is more effective at high engine load.

  • Exhaust emissions in diesel engine are affected by fuel properties but the reason for this is not clear. Especially the recent strong interest in using low-grade fuel demands extensibe investigation in order to clarify the exhaust emissions. Bio-Diesel oil has a great possibility to solve the pollution problem caused by the exhaust gas from diesel engine vehicles. The use of bio-oils in diesel engines has received considerable atten-tion to the forseeable depletion of world oil supplies. So bio-diesel oil has been attracted with attentions for alternative and clean energy source. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the fea-sibility of the rice-bran oil for alternative fuel in a diesel engine with rgard to exhaust emis-sions.

  • Current common rail engines are equipped with cooled EGR systems by using an engine cooling water system. In this study, investigations of exhaust gas reduction characteristics have been carried out in the common rail engine system depending on the EGR rate variation. The experimental results shows that NOx reduces and smoke increases as the EGR rate increases.

  • Diesel engines are widely used due to superior power and fuel consumption, however there are many challenges in exhaust gas management. Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is the most effective technique for reducing mono-nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions in a diesel engine, in comparison with other catalytic technologies. In addition, the technology has a number of advantages in terms of economic efficiency and implementation. In this study, the effects on the power and exhaust characteristics of diesel engines equipped with EGR systems were investigated. It was found that as the EGR rate increased, horsepower expressed as IHP and BHP decreased. The net effect of the application of EGR was measured at various engine speeds. EGR technology caused decreases in BHP of around 9% during low engine speed and 3.5% during high engine speed. Additionally, NOx emissions reduced as the EGR rate increased, and increased as engine speed increased. However, smoke emissions increased as the EGR rate increased, and decreased as engine speed increased. The optimum operating conditions and ERG rate to simultaneously achieve minimum NOx and smoke emissions were investigate. It was found that as the EGR rate increased, optimal operating speed for minimal NOx and smoke also increased. • We have a lot of interest in alternative fuels to provide energy independence from oil producing country and to reduce exhaust emissions for air pollution prevention. Biodiesel, which can be generated from natural renewable sources such as new or used vegetable oils or animal fats, may be used as fuel without change of engine structure in diesel engine of compression ignition engine. In this paper, the test results on specific fuel consumption and exhaust emissions of neat diesel oil and biodiesel blends(10 vol.% biodiesel and 20 vol.% biodiesel) were presented using four stroke, direct injection diesel engine. Especially this biodisel was produced from rape oil at our laboratory by ourselves. This study showed that specific fuel consumption and NOx emission were slightly increased, on the other hand CO emission and Soot were tolerably decreased more in the case of biodiesel blends than neat diesel oil.
