  • As part of basic studies of monitoring carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) storage using electrical and seismic surveys, laboratory experiments have been conducted to measure resistivity and P-wave velocity changes due to the injection of $CO_2$ into water-saturated sandstone. The rock sample used is a cylinder of Berea sandstone. $CO_2$ was injected under supercritical conditions (10 MPa, $40^{\circ}C$). The experimental results show that resistivity increases monotonously throughout the injection period, while P-wave velocity and amplitude decrease drastically due to the supercritical $CO_2$ injection. A reconstructed P-wave velocity tomogram clearly images $CO_2$ migration in the sandstone sample. Both resistivity and seismic velocity are useful for monitoring $CO_2$ behaviour. P-wave velocity, however, is less sensitive than resistivity when the $CO_2$ saturation is greater than ~20%. The result indicates that the saturation estimation from resistivity can effectively complement the difficulty of $CO_2$ saturation estimations from seismic velocity variations. By combining resistivity and seismic velocity we were able to estimate $CO_2$ saturation distribution and the injected $CO_2$ behaviour in our sample.

  • Fifteen min-microtremor data sets were collected at 136 sites from a coastal area of Kunsan and 117 sites from an inland area of Jeonju located in SW Korea, and were analyzed for the HVSR (Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio) of the sites. The microtremor spectra of the coastal area have stronger energy in the lower frequency range from 1-6 Hz than those of the coastal area. This result can be attributed to the effect of the waves and tides in the Keum river and the Yellow sea. Twenty four hours of measurement of the microtremor indicated that the microtremor spectrum correlates with the human activities, but the microtremor HVSR peak was observed consistently at the characteristic frequency for the site. The HVSR peaks were grouped into 4 types -"single peak", "double peak", "broad peak" or "no peak"- based on their shapes. More than 90% of the data sets exhibit peak frequencies ($F_0$) which can be easily identified. The distribution of $F_0$ reveals a close relationship with the topography and local geology of the areas, exhibiting high F0s in the hillside areas and low $F_0s$ in the reclaimed land area. While the amplitudes of microtremor HVSR peak frequencies are less than 4 in the downstream of the inland area, those of the recently reclaimed land in the coastal area are extremely high (more than 10). The results of this study indicate that detailed HVSR studies are essential for the earthquake hazard reduction of reclaimed lands.

  • An experimental study was performed in order to investigate the influence of Reynolds number on the drag coefficient variations of an oscillating airfoil. A NACA 0012 airfoil was sinusoidally pitched at the quarter chord point with an oscillating amplitude of ${\pm}6^{\circ}$. The free-stream velocities were 1.98, 2.83 and 4.03 m/s and the corresponding chord Reynolds numbers were $2.3{\times}10^4$, $3.3{\times}10^4$ and $4.8{\times}10^4$, respectively. The drag coefficient was calculated from the ensemble average velocity measured by an X-type hot-wire probe(X-type, 55R51) in the near-wakes region. In the case of Re=$2.3{\times}10^4$, variation of drag coefficient shows a negative damping (counter-clockwise variation), which implies an unstable state which could be excited by aerodynamic force, whereas the drag coefficient represents the positive damping (clockwise variation) as the Reynolds number increases from Re=$3.3{\times}10^4$ to $4.8{\times}10^4$. Hence, the drag coefficient variations show significant differences between Re=$2.3{\times}10^4$ and $4.8{\times}10^4$이다.

  • With 31 existing reservoirs selected in the Yong San River Basin, the sedimentation of the reservoirs has been calulated by comparing the precent capacity with original value, which revealed its reduced reservoir capacity. The reservoirs have a total catchment area of 13,871 ha. with a total capacity of 17.6 million cubic meter, and are short of water supply due to reduction of reservoir capacity. Annual sedimentation in the reservoir ranged from 120 to 3,770 cubic meter per square kilometer with great difference in its distribution, and the average value was 877 cubic meter. This wide disparity is analysed to come principally from the topography, geology, vegetation and hydraulics. The reservoir basin had a large portion of devastated land but has become green more and more in the last 10 years. It can be summarized that in the reservoirs with an average period of sedimentation of 26 years, the reduction rate of reservoir capacity amounts 12.5%, and 0.48% is shown for annual capacity reduction rate.

  • This paper describes a trans-admittance scanner for breast cancer detection. A FPGA-based sinusoidal waveform generator produces a constant voltage. The voltage is applied between a hand-held electrode and a scan probe placed on the breast. The scan probe contains an 8x8 array of electrodes that are kept at the ground potential. Multi-channel precision digital ammeters using the phase-sensitive demodulation technique were developed to measure the exit current from each electrode in the array. Different regions of the breast are scanned by moving the probe on the breast. We could get trans-admittance images of resistor and saline phantoms with an anomaly inside. The images provided the information on the depth and location of the anomaly. In future studies, we need to improve the accuracy through a better calibration method. We plan to test the scanner's ability to detect a cancer lesion inside the human breast.

  • The South China Sea (SCS) is a typical marginal sea characterized with the deep basin, shelf break, shallow shelf, many straits, and complex bathymetry. This study investigated the tidal characteristics and propagation, and reproduced typhoon-induced storm surge in this region using the regional real-time tide-surge model, which was based on the unstructured grid, resolving in detail the region of interest and forced by tide at the open boundary and by wind and air pressure at the surface. Typhoon Haiyan, which occurred in 2013 and caused great damage in the Philippines, was chosen as a case study to simulate typhoon's impact. Amplitudes and phases of four major constituents were reproduced reasonably in general, and the tidal distributions of four constituents were similar to the previous studies. The modelled tide seemed to be within the acceptable levels, considering it was difficult to reproduce the tide in this region based on the previous studies. The free oscillation experiment results described well the feature of tide that the diurnal tide is prevailing in the SCS. The tidal residual current and total energy dissipation were discussed to understand the tidal and sedimentary environments. The storm-surge caused by typhoon Haiyan was reasonably simulated using this modeling system. This study established the regional real-time barotropic tide/water level prediction system for the South China Sea including the seas around the Philippines through the validation of the model and the understanding of tidal characteristics.

  • FHMA(frequency hopping multiple access) communication system has good performance for the LPI and AJ(low probability of intercept and anti-jamming) application. However, high PAPR(peak to average power ratio) happens in the base-station or the repeater system because of a large number of users. In general, predistorter is used to complete the HPA(high power amplifier) nonlinear characteristics. This paper analyzes BER performance when magnitude of IBO(input back oft) and the number of user are considered as the system parameters. In case of the SSPA(solid state power amplifier), the predistorter does not always work as a complete nonlinear compensator. We find that there is a minimum value of IBO for the predistorter to compensate for the nonlinear SSP A, which is changed as the number of user. If IBO is lower than 6 ㏈ at the user number of 16 and p=1, the system with predistorter is poorer than the one without predistorter. Only when the IBO is over 6 ㏈, predistorter does work as a nonlinear compensator. We call it as cross-over IBO value. TWTA improves the more compensation performance than SSPA because characteristic AM/AM of TWTA has more nonlinear than SSPA. At the BER=10$\^$-3/, there are SNR power gains of about 2.5 ㏈ and 3 ㏈ due to the predistorter when the numbers of users are 16 and 32, respectively.

  • Assuming that tidal level is constantly changed with an amplitude of 10 meters and a cycle of 12 hours, the slope stability for a typical dyke is analysed. The variation of pore water pressure within the dyke during the tidal change is obtained using a computer program, FLUMP, which is incorporated with saturated-unsaturated and transient flow. The results show that the variation of free water surface and distribution of pore water pressure within the dyke during the tidal fluctuations can be clearly predicted with the computer program. When a tide is lowered to the minimum level, the predicted pressure head is higher than the level of the free water surface in some parts of the dyke; that is, excess pore water pressure is generated in a zone affected by the tidal change. Also an unsaturated zone which shows negative pore water pressure is temporally created when a tide is lowered. The shear strength of the zone can be predicted based on the proposal suggested by Fredlund et al. It is emphasized that the excess pore water pressure generated during tidal fluctuations and strength parameters for the unsaturated zone should be considered in analyzing the slope stability of dykes. When those are considered, the critical slip surface seems to be located below the free water surface obtained when a tide is at the lowest.

  • A simplified single degree of freedom analog with mass-spring-dashpot is proposed in this study. The simplified analog can describe the dynamic behavior of a rigid circular footings whose contact pressures are parabolic. The analog proposed in this study shows remarkable agreement when compared with the elastic half-space theory the analog is also compared with vertical vibration test results of model concrete footings. For the vibration experiments, 11 circular footings with different mass ratio are constructed. The elastic half-space is represented by compacted sand layer. A constant force excitation vibrator is used for the dynamic loading. The frequency range for vibration tests is 30 to 100 Hz. From the dynamic experiments, it is found that the measured resonant frequencies agree very well with the analog results, however, the ratio of theoretical and measured resonant amplitudes vary between 0.5 and 1.7. It is also found that, when the dynamic force is increased, the resonant frequency is decreased slightly and the resonant amplitude is increased slightly.
