Pyrolysis oil (PO), also known as Bio crude oil (BCO), has the potential to displace significant amounts of fuels that are currently derived from petroleum sources. PO has been regarded as an alternative fuel for petroleum fuels to be used in diesel engine. However, the use of PO in a diesel engine requires modifications due to low energy density, high water contents, low acidity, and high viscosity of the PO. One of the easiest way to adopt PO to diesel engine without modifications is emulsification of PO with the fuels that has higher cetane number. However, PO that has high amount of polar chemicals is immiscible with non polar hydrocarbons of diesel. Thus, to stabilize a homogeneous phase of diesel-PO blends, a proper surfactant should be used. In this study, a DI diesel engine operated with diesel and diesel-PO emulsions was experimentally investigated. Performance and gaseous & particle emission characteristics of a diesel engine fuelled by diesel-PO emulsions were examined. Results showed that stable engine operation was possible with the emulsions and engine output power was comparable to diesel operation.
Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) has been used as motor fuel due to its low emissions and low cost. This study addresses the analysis of the LPG spray behavior near injection nozzle. The LPG spray photographs are compared with sprays of diesel fuel at the same conditions. The LPG spray photos show that the dispersion characteristic depends very sensuously on the ambient pressure soon after injection. The spray angle is very wide in a low ambient pressure condition until the saturated pressure at this test condition, but the angle value is quickly reduced at the condition over the pressure.
Particulate matters(PM) have bad effect on the health. We carried out measurements of diesel PM under $10{\mu}m$ diameter from a HSDI diesel engine with a diesel oxidation catalyst(DOC) by using the ELPI. This paper compares the two results of the smoke level and the PM level of masses and numbers. We also investigated the effect of the DOC. Under high speed and load, HSDI diesel engine exhausts much masses of particulate matters over 100nm diameter, and a number of PM from 7 to 100nm diameters at the same condition. DOC could reduce the total mass of the PM. However, the DOC could increase the number of ultra fine PM. Before light-off of the soot, the DOC absorb the PM and the DOC oxidize the PM after light-off temperature. The fine PM could be made during the oxidation. Therefore, the advanced DOC is needed to reduce the number of the fine PM.
Recently, diesel vehicles have been increased and their emission standards have been getting strict. The emission of diesel vehicles contains numerous dangerous compounds, especially particulate matters cause a serious environmental pollutant and affect to human health seriously. Thousands of studies have already reported that particulate matters are associated with respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, and death. Due to these, it is necessary to measure the soot concentration and soot particle size in laboratory flames or practical engines to recognize the soot formation, and develop the control strategies for soot emission. In this study, the characteristics of exhausted soot particle size and volume fraction from 2.0L CRDI diesel engine have been investigated as varying engine speed and load. Laser induced incandescence has been used to measure soot concentration. Time-resolved laser induced incandescence has been used to determine soot particle size in the engine. The soot volume fraction is increased as increasing engine load but soot volume fraction is decreased as increasing engine speed. The primary particle size is distributed about $35nm{\sim}60nm$ at each experimental conditions.
The direct injection diesel engine is one of the most efficient thermal engines. For this reason DI diesel engines are widely used for heavy-duty applications. But the world is faced with very serious problems related to the air pollution due to the exhaust emissions of diesel engine. So, that is air pollution related to exhaust gas resulted from explosive combustion should be improved. Exhaust Gas Recirculation(EGR) is a proven method to reduce NOx emissions. In this study, the experiments-were performed at various engine loads while the EGR rates were set from 0% to 20%. The emissions trade-off and combustion of diesel engine are investigated. Hot and cooled EGR are achieved without cooling and with cooling respectively. It was found that the exhaust emissions with the EGR system resulted in a very large reduction in oxides of nitrogen at the expense of higher smoke emissions. Also, the reduction rates of NOx emissions for hot and cooled EGR are similar at load 20%.
As the environmental pollution becomes serious global problem, the regulation of emission exhausted from automobiles is strengthened. Therefore, it is very important to know how to reduce the NOx and PM simultaneously in diesel engines, which has lot of merits such as high thermal efficiency, low fuel consumption and durability. By this reason, the new concept called as Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition(HCCI) engines are spotlighted because this concept reduced NOx and P.M. simultaneously. However, there is trade off between output and NOx in a HCCI engine. In this study, output and emission characteristics for a gasoline direct injection type HCCI engine were investigated to clarify the effects of intake air temperature, injection time and mixture formation. From these experiments, we found that the smoke was not produced when the fuel was injected earlier than BTDC 90$^{\circ}$. In addition, the output was increased because of delay of ignition time and NOx emission was decreased because of homogeneous charge of first injection in case of split injection.
This study is to develop the diesel engine which has 6 cylinder natural aspiration direct injection type of 7.4$\ell$ with high performance, low emissions and low fuel consumption Finally the developed engine meets Korean `98 exhaust emission regulation for the city bus of heavy duty diesel engine by optimizing the various combustion parameters affecting performance and exhaust emissions. Combustion parameters are the swirl ratio of intake ports, the profile of injection pump`s cam affecting injection pressure, the design features of piston bowl of injection pump`s cam affecting injection pressure, the design features of piston bowl of combustion chamber and injector`s hole size. Through experimental analysis, various combustion parameters are optimized and the results are as follows; the swirl ratio is 2.20, the profile of injection pump`s cam is concave and re-entrant ratio, inner diameter of piston bowl and hole diameter of injector is 0.88,$\psi$64.0mm and $\psi$0.25mm respectively.
The direct injection into the cylinders has been regarded as a way of the reduction in fuel consumption and pollutant emissions. The spray produced from the injector of DIS(Direct Injection Spark Ignition) engine is of paramount importance in DISI engines. Fan-spray injector as well as swirl-spray injector was developed and utilized to the DISI engines. The interaction between air flow and fuel spray was investigated in a steady flow system embodied in a wind tunnel to simulate the variety of flow inside the cylinder of the DISI engineer. The direct Mie scattered images presented the macroscopic view of the liquid spray fields interacted with crossflow. Particle sizes of fuel droplets were measured with phase Doppler anemometer(PDA) system. A faster cross-flow field made SMD larger and $D_{10}$ smaller. The experiments show the interaction of air flow field and the fuel spray field of fan-spray. The results can be utilized to construct the data-base for the spray and fuel-air mixing mechanism as a function of the flow characteristics.
It was investigated how fuel injection timing - early injection and later injection - in conjunction with throttle open rate effect the fuel-air mixing characteristics, Engine power, combustion stability and emission characteristics on a DI CNG spark Engine and control system that had been modified and designed according to the author's original idea. It was verified that the combustion characteristics were changed according to fuel injection timings and Engine conditions determined by different throttle open rates and rpm. It was found that the combustion characteristics greatly improved at the complete open throttle rate with an early injection timing and at the part throttle rate with a late injection timing. Combustion duration was governed by flame propagation duration in a late injection timing and by an early flame development duration in an early injection timing. As the result, we discovered that combustion duration is shortened, lean limit is improved, air-fuel mixing conditions controlled, and emissions reduced through control of fuel injection timing according to change of the throttle open rate.
The direct injection into the cylinders has been regarded as a way of the reduction in fuel consumption and pollutant emissions. The spray produced by the high pressure injector is of paramount importance in DISI(Direct Injection Spark Ignition) engines in that the primary atomization process must meet the requirement of quick and complete evaporation, mixing with air and combustion especially to prohibit the excessive HC emissions. The interaction between air flow and fuel spray was investigated in a steady flow system embodied in a wind tunnel to simulate the variety of flow inside the cylinder of the DISI engine. The direct Mie scattered and shadowgraph images presented the macroscopic view of the liquid sprays and vapor fields. The velocity and particle size of fuel droplets were investigated by phase doppler anenometer(PDA) system. The processes of atomization and evaporation with a DISI injector were observed and consequently utilized to construct the data-base for the spray and fuel-air mixing mechanism as a function of the flow characteristics.
